Bones huffed in amusement. “Yeah, when have you been the one to listen to anyone.” He pointed out playfully. As much as he loved to watch out for Sirius, he was known to be quite a rebel. Wordlessly, he took out his wand and made a small fire at the end of it before extending it to his friend to light up the cigarette. Once it was, he extinguished the flame with a flick and tucked the wand back into his coat pocket.
“Cousin?” When Sirius spoke of Narcissa, his chin tilted upwards in understand and then he nodded. “Ah. The youngest of the Black women.” Who didn’t know the Black family? An infamous pureblooded family spanning decades. He could hardly envision Sirius as a part of it and nearly always kept the rest of them seperate in his mind. “So she crashed the wedding? It doesn’t sound too surprising. What about the other two sisters? Are they here too?” His brows furrowed in concern, particularly about the eldest. He didn’t really know anything about the middle one.
“You speak the truth, Bones.” Sirius laughed, crossing one of his legs over the other. “Both my parents, my Hogwarts professors, and Remus can confirm that I’m not the greatest at listening to authority figures.” As he spoke, he leaned forward, cigarette tucked neatly between his lips. It took a small turn of his head in order to guide the cigarette over the flame. It was more difficult than he wanted to admit, but after a few seconds, he positioned his smoke beneath Bones’ wand. The flame caught, and he inhaled quickly as he leaned himself back against his seat.
Sirius made a face, blowing smoke out through his nose as Bones began to speak. “I guess it’s not that surprising.” Narcissa was a classic socialite, thinking that she ought to be invited to every event, no matter how inconsequential or small. Sirius glanced over his shoulder, and then back to Bones. “Andromeda is here somewhere, with Ted.” He didn’t mind that at all. It was only Narcissa’s presence that left him feeling bothered. “Bellatrix isn’t, though, thank Merlin. --- Not that it was ever a possibility. This definitely isn’t her scene.”
thewarriorstar·:
As it is with me, Bellatrix thought after he spoke of her. She thought again how convenient it would be for the family if Sirius was killed during the wedding. Regulus would finally be free of him and the family would finally be rid of the unworthy Black. She tried to wipe all memories of her cousin as a sweet little one and simply focused on how good that would all be. “I can only imagine,” she responded with a sympathetic smile.
An auror. If Bellatrix could possibly despise her cousin more this did it. Now there was much less doubt in her mind that they would be better off without him in the picture. The surprise on Ezra’s face was genuine and then Bellatrix had to reel in a scowl to give him an excited smile and pat on the shoulder. “Sirius, mate… That’s bloody brilliant. Look at you! All grown up now… An Auror to protect us all. I couldn’t be prouder - no doubt everyone is.”
Sirius wondered if his mother had heard of his choice in career. Once upon a time, she might have been proud of him for becoming an Auror. Not because she necessarily believed in the cause, but because it was always beneficial to have a Black in important areas of government. He could have accomplished important work for their family, had he ever been loyal to their values. Such was the case, the only cause he fought for was his very own. Walburga Black, if she hadn’t heard already, would surely find out sooner or later. He hoped it was the former. He always had enjoyed making that woman angry.
Sirius grinned. He was proud of himself, that much was true, but to hear such praise from Ezra Macmillian was truly something else. He, despite being rejected from his family, was making something of himself. “I appreciate that, Ezra.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I’m only a baby auror right now, freshly in the program, but---” His smile widened even further. “--- one day, I’ll be as great as Moody.”

Holding grudges longer than necessary was something that Regulus was very good at. There were still times aschildren that Regulus could recount when he and Sirius had argued over littlethings and Regulus would bring up something that had happened years prior. He didso with everyone – Sirius wasn’t special. Anytime a person angered him, heremembered it so that later when he interacted with whatever person it was, hewouldn’t let their mistakes hurt him again. Regulus could bring up even themost minuscule events that happened ages ago because that’s just the type ofperson he was. He wouldn’t let people hurt him a second time, even if it meantletting go of a person that he so clearly loved.
“I’m not thedramatic one, Sirius,” he responded in a tone that sounded mildly offended.
Brothers ornot, Sirius had acted more like a brother to his friends than he did toRegulus. Maybe when they were children things had been different between them. Deepdown, he understood why Sirius had left, but it didn’t make it any less painfuland Regulus didn’t want to stand around and watch as Sirius continued to choosehis friends over his own blood relatives. They weren’t brothers anymore. Not toRegulus. They’d stopped being brothers the day Sirius walked out on the family.
He didn’t understandhow Sirius couldn’t see how hurt he was by all this. How could Sirius thinkthat after just leaving him behind that he was going to forgive him so easily?Regulus liked holding grudges. But it was more than that. He was upset over hisbrother leaving. The power that came along with being an heir was something henever expected; now that he had it, he had no idea why anyone would just giveit up. Regulus couldn’t afford Sirius to drag him down. He needed more thantime and space to get over the awful feeling of being left. Regulus had never beentruly important to the Black family until he was their only option – and itfelt good to be wanted by his parents for once, rather than tossed aside. And hewas not going to do anything to jeopardize losing everything for someone that didn’teven care about him to begin with.
So no. If SiriusBlack wanted forgiveness, he was going to have to wait forever – because Reguluswas not about to forget what he’d done so easily.
There werelots of reasons why he didn’t want to forgive Sirius too. Not just the fear ofgetting hurt or fear of losing his own power. It was also because Sirius was aweakness. Anyone that spent time with him would know that – after all, hatredwas still passion of sorts. Caring too much, or at all, for someone at a timelike this was dangerous. Regulus wondered if Sirius even thought like that. It wassimple to hide behind his anger for his brother, but Regulus was afraid. Afraid of losing someone again, afraid of losing power, afraid of this war, afraid of his responsibilities asan heir. This was far more complicated than it needed to be. Regulus knew theywere on opposite sides of this fight and Sirius had to at least think aboutthat.
“Yeah, because as far as I’m aware, you owe me nothing. And I don’t owe you anything either. Why pretend that we are anything other than strangers?” Regulus stopped in histracks and turned to the older boy. “Don’t treat me like a child incapable ofmaking his own decisions,” he snapped, balling his hand into a fist and closedhis eyes. He could just disappear. Apparate out of this situation. But he had afeeling he wouldn’t get away that easily. “Why should I give you the time ofday? Why should I let you try and defend what you did? Why should I give you anychance to come back into my life for even a second?” Regulus let his angerdictate the conversation, even if that was probably a mistake. He didn’t wantto cause too much of a scene; he just couldn’t help it. “You don’t care about meand maybe you never did. So just go back to your family and leave me alone.”
Regulus turned on his heel and started to walk away again. If Sirius wanted to follow, he could. He could argue all night if he had to. There was no way he was going to ever let Sirius Black back into his life. Even if he wanted to, Regulus was sure the Death Eaters, the majority of his family, and his friends would all shun him or hurt Sirius as a warning. If he let his brother back into his life he’d end up with no one.
Why can’t you see, you lost me a long time ago?
How Regulus could say with a straight was that he wasn’t the “dramatic one” was entirely lost to Sirius. Regulus was nothing but dramatic. This moment right now was evidence enough. Sirius would admit that he also had a flair for theatrics. It was practically a family trait, really. But he was most certainly not on Regulus’ level of spectacle.
He wondered how different things might have been, had he asked Regulus to come with him? Would they have finally started acting like brothers again? Or would Regulus have rejected him before their family ever did? Such questions often swirled around his head in the months immediately following his departure, but they had abated by now.
It hurt Sirius, to hear how clearly their mother and father had hooked themselves into Regulus. All this talk of owing one another, or not owing one another. It was his mother’s voice, speaking to him through his little brother. He could feel the dark tendrils of hatred reserved only for her wound their way around his vocal cords. He wanted to yell at his brother, ask him how he could have been so stupid to believe them, when he was so, so smart? He tried to calm himself, to think before speaking, but it was difficult. This was Regulus, after all, and as much as he might want to pretend they were strangers, Sirius knew better. Like it or not, they were brothers. After all, who made you more angry than your siblings? Sirius could think of very little, except for parents, of course.
“We’re not strangers!” Sirius shot back, exasperated. “As much as you might want that to be true, it’s not, Regulus. For better, or for worse, you’re still my little brother.” He shook his head, trying and failing to fight off the annoyance filling him up from the inside.
“If you don’t want to be treated like a child, then stop acting like one! Think for yourself, damn it, stop spouting off what Mum thinks.”
Sirius glanced downwards, his gaze caught by the sight of Regulus curling his fists. Some of his bad feelings dissolved at the sight. Angry as he was, he didn’t want to stress his brother more than he already had. Unfortunately, his feelings often got the better of him, no matter what he may have wanted.
“I’m not asking you for forgiveness, Reg. I just want to talk.” He said slowly, exhaling through his nose in an effort to stay calm. That quickly went out the window, however, a split-second later.
“How dare you say that I don’t care about you?” He snapped, increasing his speed to stay in match with Regulus. “You know, for someone so smart, you can be so stupid. I wouldn’t be here, trying to get through that thick skull of yours if I didn’t care.” He tossed his hands up, a visual of his growing frustration. “If anyone doesn’t care, it’s you.”
marauder-remus-lupin·:
Remus took a deep breath through his nose, willing his stomach to right itself. Since getting his Apparition license a few years ago, Remus had gotten quite good at it, but still found the method of transportation made him feel ill now and again. If he was being honest, Remus would admit he much preferred muggle methods of transportation, though they were not nearly as convenient. Why did everything have to be unpleasant? Apparition? Nauseating. Floo network? Hello bruised elbows. Portkey? No thanks.
It only took him a moment to recover, and once he did Remus quickly fell into step beside Sirius, glancing over to him with a grin. It was always fun to watch his pureblood friends discover the muggle world. Remus himself had grown up more firmly rooted in the wizarding world as well, but his mother made sure he was no stranger to her way of life. Muggle money wasn’t so much of a mystery to him as it was to his friends. “Much more logical, I’d say. Of course you’d like it better, being that it’s easier to count, Padfoot.” He teased.
“How’d you find this place anyway?” Remus asked as they rounded the corner of the building to the sidewalk, looking around at the rows of muggle shops lining the street.
“Well, you know how much I hate counting, Moony. Of course I like it better.” Sirius said back, a smile lighting up his face.
The streets were still busy, but slowly beginning to thin out. It was the end of the work way, and muggles moved all around them, walking on the sidewalks and driving their cars in the street. Sirius was still working on learning all of their traffic rules, after getting into a spot of trouble with the muggle police while on his motorbike. He wondered what he had done with the “ticket” given to him by the officer. What was it a ticket for, he wondered? He’d forgotten to ask.
“Emmeline told me about a grocery store near our flat.” Sirius said. “But while I was there, I met a muggle girl. I swear it, Remus, ---” He said happily, gesturing about with his hands as he spoke. “--- she looked just like the girl on the poster I had in my room at Grimmauld Place.” The sign for Phonica Records loomed up ahead, just three minutes up the sidewalk. “So, of course I had to talk to her. Anyways, we ended up going on a walk, and she brought me here. I’ve been going ever since.”
marauder-remus-lupin·:
Remus laughed, easily accepting the brownie Sirius shoved into his hands. He looked it over for a moment before taking a generous bite. Sirius was right, he had been missing out. The brownie was one of the best he’d ever had, and before he could finish the first bite, Remus was already reaching for a plate so he could pile on a couple more. “-so good.” He muttered, his mouth full.
He watched his best friend pat his stomach with an amused smile, holding up a finger as he finished the brownie. “I don’t know, Padfoot. Best not to overdo before the ceremony.” He cautioned good-naturedly. Remus was not usually one to practice restraint when it came to alcohol, one of his many flaws, but he doubted Ezra and Eliza would appreciate a couple of drunk fools at the ceremony. Best to leave that for the reception. “I figure he’s somewhere around here, most likely with Lily. It’s Wormtail I can’t seem to find.” He added, scanning the crowd of wedding guests for their friends.
“Overdo it?” Sirius repeated, eyes widen and mouth falling open. “Me? Overdo it? When have I ever done that?”
It was an entirely ridiculous thing for Sirius to say, considering that both he and Remus knew it was a lie. For better, and for worse, Sirius Black liked to go all out, and the extra mile. He glanced back out into the crowd, still looking for a waiter with drinks. “Well, if I overdo it---” He laughed, unable to finish the sentence without doing so. “--- that’s why I have you, to make sure I don’t make a fool of myself.” He held up his hand, “I’ll try to behave myself, though. I promise.”
Sirius nodded in agreement. “I saw old Slughorn around here earlier, maybe James got trapped with Lily during one of their conversations.” His bad behavior, and general lack of civility had turned Professor Slughorn off about Sirius, and James too. The poor bloke just had to fall in love with Slughorn’s favorite, didn’t he?
“I haven’t seen Wormtail in days.” Sirius complained. “D’you reckon he even knows about the wedding? I bet he forgot.”
emmelinevalerianvance·:
“It’s certainly better than anything I could ever make.” Emmeline agreed with a laugh. She could fend for herself in a kitchen if she had to, but she knew very little in the way of cooking decent meals and even less about cooking food like this. “Grab me a few of those too, yeah?” She said, reaching for her clutch tucked under her arm with a grin. There was a small extension charm on it, so there was plenty of room for leftovers.
Sirius’s question gave her pause and Emmeline thought over the last time she’d actually used a freezing charm. It wasn’t a charm that she used often, especially when she had a freezer at home. “I’m pretty sure the charm is colder, but I bet if you did both the food would keep longer, that is, so long as it didn’t thaw in the freezer. That sounds rather clever, actually.” She gave a small hum of appreciation at his idea.
“Good” She nodded when he easily followed her advice, wondering how it was Sirius managed to turn her into her mother every time they spoke. He wasn’t so much younger than her, and yet she found she was rather protective of her neighbor. Perhaps it was the way he seemed lost in a world so different from the one he had always known, viewing it with such a childlike sense of wonder, that had pushed Emmeline into keeping an eye on him.
“I’m having a great time.” Emmeline said with a smile, thinking back on the friends she’d run into at the wedding so far. Everyone seemed to be in a joyous mood, and it was nice to have something to celebrate for a change. “I don’t know what I was expecting from a pureblood wedding, but so far it’s not all that different from the muggle ones I’ve been to.” She admitted, though quietly. “How about you? Having fun?”
Emmeline was nearly as clueless in the kitchen as Sirius, and that was saying something, considering he had only just learned what a refrigerator was. It made for some expensive evenings, because take out wasn’t cheap, after all. It also made for some interesting evenings on the rare nights they did attempt to cook. If anything, though, this endeared him more towards Emmeline Vance. How unexpected, that he had come to care for her in the way that he did. In many ways, she reminded him of his cousins, if they were only a bit less mean and a lot more warm.
Taking care to not get food all over his hands, Sirius carefully grabbed and then bundled three crab cakes, passing them off to Emmeline. “Thanks. I’ll let you know how it goes.” He said cheerfully. He never did tire of compliments, did he? Especially those concerning his intelligence. Hopefully he didn’t end up breaking his freezer, though. Emmeline knew a lot about muggles, but he doubted even she would know how to fix one of their machines.
The smile on her face brought forth a similar one on his. Despite Narcissa showing her unwelcome face, Sirius really was having fun. He was excited, too. The ceremony wasn’t too far from now, and once they made it through that, the real fun would begin. Dancing, and loud music, and drinks for everyone. That certainly sounded like a good time. “I love weddings.” He said, the edges of his lips twitching into a grin. “So, yeah, I’ve been having fun. Samantha Goldstein flirted with me. I reckon she might even say yes if I asked her on a date.” He said, shaking his head like he couldn’t believe it. “I don’t know what is in the air today, but I love it.”
mulciibcrs·:
As Hades noticed the other man coming at the blonde’s direction with a rose in hand, all he could hope for was that Samantha wasn’t dating a Black. The second half of the Black bloodtraitor duo, nonetheless. Even if it probably wouldn’t be that far off since the Goldsteins were bloodtraitors themselves. “Oh, don’t be too hard on yourself.” Her voice gentle with her smile on place, widening as the rose was handed to her and even giving it a quick smell for good purpose. “I’ll even save you the first one.” Hades promised, with the full knowledge that the moment would never come. Poor little Sirius… Might get more than his heart crushed tonight.
Still trying to figure out exactly what was the relationship between Samantha and Sirius, Hades remained playing it safe– Something he rarely did but figured it was for the best in the current situation, he’d push it later when he started putting the pieces together. “So how you’ve been? I think I might’ve seen your cousins around.”
There must be something about weddings, Sirius figured, as he took in the soft smile on Samantha’s face. They rubbed away the sharp edges that everyone brought with them to work, it seemed. Deciding to take advantage of the romance in the air, Sirius returned her smile with one of his own. “The first one? Well ---” He laid a hand on his heart, imitating the fainting women he had seen in the muggle movies Emmeline had shown him. “--- I’ll be. You’ve got me swooning, Sam, did you know that?”
Like most of his conversations today, the topic turned to his family. Like before, Sirius grimaced. “Andromeda’s here, yeah. Narcissa too ---” He shook his head, “but I don’t want to talk about them.” It wasn’t often he found himself with such a golden opportunity to flirt with a witch, and he wanted to take advantage of them. “Let’s talk about you, instead. Did you ever manage to get that coworker of yours to stop bothering you?”
babyameliabones·:
Amelia struggled these last two years. When her parents died, she had a difficult time with the ongoing political struggle in the Wizarding World. She knew she wasn’t the only person that was going through the death of their loved ones, though in such a violent manner, she’d felt a little lost at first. She’d always been tough and what emotions she had were hardly ever seen on her face other than the bright, fierce little girl that everyone seemed to think she was. Though she and Sirius worked in the same department at the Ministry, they worked in completely different fields. Like her brother, Sirius was another one of the reckless ones. She was worried that he was too caught up in the fight to sit back and see what really mattered. The right way to change the world wasn’t by fighting – but by changing the law, to make something like this impossible in the future. She had always tried to be more realistic about their world – and stubborn in her ways.
But Amelia knew that she wasn’t going to change many people’s minds about this sort of thing. She didn’t bother with her brother anymore, so she wasn’t going to bother with anyone else.
“Well, I’ve been visiting with people that I don’t see that often. It’s been nice getting to catch up with those I haven’t seen since school ended or before then,” she explained. “But I’m sure you’ve kept in touch with your friends, haven’t you?” Although she’d disciplined Sirius and his friends during school when they broke school rules, Amelia had always been jealous of their close relationships. She had her friends of course, but no one that close.
“The stuffed mushrooms, alright. I’ll give those a try.” Amelia started grabbing a few of the mushrooms and whatever else was close enough on the small plate that she’d gotten. “I didn’t expect to see your cousin here,” she said, spotting Narcissa Black out of the corner of her eye.
Sirius reckoned he already kept in contact with everyone he knew at school. Well, the ones that mattered, anyways. He looked around, as if he might spot another of their classmates standing about, but he mostly just saw witches and wizards in dress robes, chatting among themselves. James and Lily were around here somewhere, probably dancing or snogging somewhere --- Remus and Peter ought to be here too, though one could never be sure with Peter. Besides Amelia, he wasn’t sure if he cared to speak to any of his old classmates, here or not. “I’ve kept in touch with James, Remus, and Peter.” He quipped. “Lily, too, since she and James and planning on getting married and everything. Not sure I talk to anybody else.”
Sirius, then, tried to remember who it was that Amelia used to spend her time with at school. He had a tendency to be a bit self-centered, and this was never more prominent than his days at school. Besides a few quiet conversations when her parents passed, the most he thought of her was with mild annoyance or disdain when she got too annoying about the whole Prefect thing. They had Remus with them, no? That was more than enough authority for Sirius. --- After a minute, he was still failing to remember who it was that she used to be friendly with. Slightly abashed, Sirius reached for another crab cake, stuffing it into his mouth.
He chewed quickly, and then swallowed, nodding in approval as Amelia grabbed a handful of stuffed mushrooms. Following her line of sight, Sirius grimaced. “Ugh, I know, right?” He wiped away some residual crab cake. “Neither did I. Ezra looked shocked to see her.” He made a face. “I was hoping she would be kicked out, but she’s still here I guess. Typical Narcissa.”
warlockebones·:
Bones made a face at Sirius, someone he affectionately saw as an annoying little brother. But there was more to it than just having fun with Black’s jokes and energetic behavior. He saw a real hero in the young man. Especially seeing what family he came from, he couldn’t believe sometimes how golden-hearted Sirius was. For a boy his age, he was a warrior truly fighting tooth and nail for what he believed was right - even if it was against his family. He was so devotedly loyal to his friends and the Order. There was nothing Bones admired more than a man looking for justice and caring for those he stood beside.
“Then why do they still make them, hmm?” He asked rhetorically, shooting his young friend a crooked grin. “Yeah… I know. But there are a lot of other things I need to worry about killing me first, hm?” He still a drag of the cigarette. “Besides, it gives me an excuse to step to the side for a second. It’s gotten a bit crowded.”
Looking his friend in the eye, Sirius reached into his own pocket. “Good question, mate. I didn’t even know smokes were that bad for you until yesterday.” He pulled out his own pack of cigarettes and dropped them on the table in between them. A grin lit up his face as he leaned forward to pull one from the box. “The clerk told me after I bought these.” Sirius reckoned that any severe side effects could be offset with magic. He also reckoned that he was far more likely to die in a blaze of wandfire than from a bit of tobacco. With this in mind, he set the cigarette between his lips.
He glanced around, “It is getting crowded, isn’t it?” Somehow, in the last half hour, the room had filled up. He supposed most of the guests had preferred to arrive fashionably late. Though he had not done so himself, he could appreciate that. “My cousin was here.” He said, his tone clearly indicating some annoyance. “Narcissa --- I don’t know if she’s still here, but I saw her earlier. What in her bloody mind made her think she would be welcome here?”
thewarriorstar·:
Bella/Ezra sighed, smiling widely. “Don’t I know it,” she said. Letting her sights wander over to Eliza laughing with a few friends, she mustered up a wistful expression and then chuckled as she looked back at Sirius. The poor girl had no idea her husband had died a week ago. “She is, isn’t she? Damn, I know we’re both lucky as hell.”
The smile she gave Sirius had a little less humor in it after his comment about her. But at the acceptance that she knew it was more or less true and Sirius what Sirius would see and endure in just half an hour or so, laughter started bubbling up in Bella/Ezra’s throat. “I take it that means you haven’t seen her in a while. What do you do now that you don’t have that strange family of yours to worry about?”
A while was a conservative estimate, Sirius reckoned. Even before his official leave from the family, he didn’t see Bellatrix more than a handful of times in a year. When he was a small boy, she was gone at Hogwarts more often than not. By the time he began attending, she had already graduated. Of his cousins, Bellatrix was the one he had always felt the least beholden to. Now that he was a verified pariah within his family, he couldn’t even think of the last time he had tried to speak with her. Unlike Narcissa and Regulus, he never tried to write her letters. Sirius nodded, “Haven’t seen her in years, more like.” He laughed, “Don’t you start worrying about my well-being, though. The separation is more than fine with me.”
Sirius waved his hand. “Anyways, I’ve still got a strange family to worry about, only a different one.” After all, James and Remus and Peter were his brothers now, and with Lily being who she was to James, he supposed she could probably be counted as a sister. They were an odd-looking family, but one that he felt more care and love from than anywhere else he had ever known. “But if I’m not running around with them, I’m usually at the Ministry.” His chest swelled with the pride of a boy happy to show off. “I’ve been accepted into the Auror program, you know.”
