DEAR BILLY - FOR @littleweirdoss
I don't care if it's August, Last Christmas is forever
Like we all know how much the duffers took inspiration from Stephen King. It’s very very obvious. It’s just truly such a shame that of all the things they could have taken they had to choose abused child is evil irredeemable asshole. Like they wanted Billy to be Henry Bowers so bad but he just wasn’t and after they killed him off they wanna act like he was.
Ultimately, I think the Duffers created a show where any type of moral greyness has a difficult time existing because the premise is so black-and-white. You can see it especially in the flattening of Steve's character. He went from this arrogant, homophobic jock with a nurturing streak to someone unambiguously nurturing. I really loved the scene in S1 where Steve destroyed Jonathan's camera because of the level of moral ambiguity to it. You have this rich kid destroying a poor kid's prized posession because that poor kid used it to do something disgusting, but the motivation wasn't fully moral disgust. Steve felt possessive and jealous over Nancy and was also insecure regarding his place in the world. So, he lashed out. It was gorgeous. Jonathan was wrong but Steve wasn't right and Nancy preferred Jonathan anyway. I loved it.
And then the audience got ahold of it and just ripped it apart trying to make one character the hero and the other the villain of that scene. I love Stranger Things but I deeply hate the audience for it. And I include myself in that because I've let myself get dragged into Steve vs Jonathan fights.
The point is, I guess, that for a character like Billy to exist the narrative and the audience has to have room for truly morally grey characters and actions. And I don't know that the Stranger Things audience (or show) really does anymore. The show has become deeply conservative in its themes and unambiguous view of good vs evil. Billy was too angry and reactive to be good; he externalized everything. But he was also too brave and too strong in the way that he dealt with Vecna (and also in the way that he dealt with Steve and even Max) to really be bad. The show brought him in because Steve couldn't be the bully with a heart of gold anymore and looking at Billy's treatment by fans, you see why.
And I think it's really unfortunate because Billy is a very realistic abuse victim and trauma survivor - a lot of people externalize that pain before they learn any better. And Stranger Things offers a very incomplete, one-sided, right-wing portrait of abuse without that perspective. And it's incredibly frustrating.
for anyone still hesitant about blocking ppel0n/billyhargroff ie. the person who drew the picture of billy with angel wings that's been getting a lot of attention recently.
because you haven't seen her be a bigot and a generally shitty person, here is a post from her billy rp blog
and here are some screenshots from her telegram account
(and before anyone cries about how not liking harringrove/mlm billy doesn't make one a homophobe, i want you to think real long and hard about what why she called other fan depictions of billy 'bimbo whores' when he's canonically promiscuous. it's clearly not the promiscuity itself that bothers her.)
the telegram screenshots were taken in april of this year, for anyone who wasn't around. if you go back in people's blog's and find these posts circulating around early april:
ppel0n is who they are referring to.
for those who were around, know this, and still choose to reblog this piece of shit's work, i hope it was worth selling your soul and your queer friends for fanart.
and for you, ppel0n? get the fuck out of our fandom. you have no right to take up space in a predominantly queer community - built around a character who is a canonical victim of homophobic violence - being a toxic, entitled, possessive little bigot. we do not want you here.

@imsodishy tags needed to be permanently on this post because they said everything I was thinking but couldn’t articulate on my middle of the night post.
