The Blessing of Light is something that is intentionally left pretty vague by the story, probably as another way to let the player fill in the gaps with whatever they want, and while sometimes this manifests in the story treating the blessing like a bodysuit of kevlar, I think the much more interesting interpretation is to go full whump with it and establish that the only rule is that the warrior of light cannot die. Aside from the subplot in post-ARR/HW being more interesting with the real threat of death now upon them, it just adds so much sauce. We can magick away the possibility of their head getting chopped off with the superhuman reflexes Hydaelyn hath granted, and so it is very delicious to imagine someone who, rather than being unable to be meaningfully injured, is instead able to just keep going despite catastrophic bodily harm. The warrior of light just keeps fucking going, no matter how much they may wish they were dead. More blood than humanly possible spilling out onto the ground, face pale, hands shaking, still moving with eerie grace and agility, screaming with pain every time they bring another desperate strike down? Thats the good shit.
I recall the devs saying that party wipes in a dungeon are just the WoL having Echo visions on what Not to fucking do, implying that they hallucinate their death repeatedly before triumphing.
Which is equally, "That's rough buddy."
So this post goes on main because it's not about the game itself, but about the guy who was responsible for a lot of it.
YoshiP, the director and producer for the game Final Fantasy XIV of which I'm a huge a fan, once went on record in front of a crowd announcing that the game will slowly be unlocking gendered gear for both masculine and feminine models. That is to say, they're going back to a lot of old gear set and making it so that even if you're on a male model, you can wear "traditionally feminine" clothing like dresses etc just fine. The personal anecdote he shared along with it was because he saw a mother react repulsively towards someone wearing the supposedly wrong gendered outfit on his commute one day, pulling her child away while this person was just walking and minding their own business, and that greatly saddened him. So even though he only worked on a game, he wanted to give players and potential players somewhere they could express themselves freely.
This was a pretty incredibly rare move for an MMORPG, never mind one that constantly came out with new gear sets multiple times per expansion. Game devs were going back to old equipment models and redoing them for both model genders, and we'd had consistent updates on hairstyles, clothes, all kinds of things since then.
I'm not here to say that Naoki Yoshida is a perfect person who always deserves everyone's support. I can think of at least one instance where I wish he would do better, lmao. But he's been incredibly professional with his product and also understands that it's a collaborative work of art and game, and he's always been very kind towards the people who play his game and who his product immediately affects, as well. He also went on record directly telling harassment on the English voice actor for a major character in the new expansion, who IRL is a trans woman, to stop. She posted that at a later FanFest, he met up with her to ask how she was doing and hung out with her specifically, afterwards.
I dunno. The recent FanFest reminded me of this. He brought out a senior member of the battle design system to introduce some earth-shaking changes to said battle system and other parts of FFXIV, and spent a lot of time introducing him and showing the team's strong support for the guy. Players are most cynical and abusive when it comes to system changes in MMOs, and considering how YoshiP had been in the past, his kindness and support for the guy felt incredibly purposeful and yet still very sincere.
I would play FFXIV on its own merits, because it was truly an incredible game and story that had very literally reshaped the worst parts of my life when I needed it the most, but it's very nice to know that it's made by someone who's kind to the trans/queer community and continues to show his support by designing his game to accommodate people's self expression, while still keeping the quality top notch.
So
For those who follow me for non-FFXIV reasons, I bring a crumb of internet drama to your door:
As with a lot of MMOs, roleplaying is a big thing. A BIG thing. Another big thing is the modding scene, so you can get your character looking just how you like. Squeenix does not best love mods, but it's broadly a don't-ask-don't-tell situation: as long as your mods don't give you an unfair advantage and you don't rub them in anyone's face, they'll look the other way
Guess what's the explicit direct polar opposite of not rubbing it in anyone's face
Buying four entire billboards in a major US city about it
A roleplay group bought out multiple billboards to advertise an event, and used both a modded screenshot (edit: that apparently uses a datamined unreleased outfit holy shit) and the official game logo on it
This Has Gone Well For Them and last I heard people had been banned temporarily over it pending more severe action, the modding scene is having very real fears that Squeenix will crack down on mod use over it, and apparently the organizers are pitching a hissy on their discord
No one is happy
Apparently there is a standoff happening outside the group's house where people are camped out on magitek armor using the missile emotes
Well you see, about what they were planning to do at that beach party,
Certified FFXIV Heritage Post
On the one hand picking up the reflections stories has me interested in finishing Dawntrail and playing again.
On the other hand disappointed that the less intense story of the WoL having a more chill adventure was exactly what I wanted but I lost interest anyway.
If I spend more than two minutes thinking about Endwalker and the themes of depression, suicidal ideation and hope; walking towards a new tomorrow all the while asking why, because the dark sludge of depression is drowning you and everything is pain, yet never stopping because the walk itself is proof of a spark of hope, I start crying, actually.

How does your WoL handle liqour?
Out-drinks everyone
Can keep up but is feeling it
Enjoys a drink here or there
Lightweight -like half a drink takes them out
Prefers a mocktail
Thank you guys for replying to these and sharing stories about your characters! I do read them all <3333
endwalker really was like 'your society will collapse if you refuse to protect those most vulnerable' and like. Takes a drag of my nonexistent cigarette. Yeah
They only get along when they're both sleepy
