“how did you get into writing” girl nobody gets into writing. writing shows up one day at your door and gets into you
"how did you get into writing" girl i've been tormented by the visions since i was eight years old
Almost kissing? "I owe you everything"? After years of hugging each other at most? If I witnessed that in 1998 I'd go insane
I was in the theater 10 times. 3 times the day it opened. I made $5.15 an hour. A matinee cost $5.50. All the money I didnt spend on food or gas got me a ticket to the theater between June 19 and July 21. I danced up the aisle to Teotihuacan at the end.
1998 was possibly the worst year of my life. I was trapped and it felt like I would never be free. Fandom got me thru. Fandom kept me alive. For 2 hours I could sit in a dark air conditioned room and pretend the rest of my life wasn’t real.
OT, but thanks X-Files fandom. I owe you everything.
women were not banging out spirk fanfiction in the 60s for you to be AI generating your fic
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

Ten years later, this bit still slaps. They made a great pun and realized they could be nice/inclusive with it too.

turns out you only need three things to survive the apocalypse (total collapse of human society and takeover by aliens for an intergalactic game show):
your ex-girlfriend’s prizewinning persian cat
the system ai’s foot fetish (your feet, specifically)
anticapitalist RAGE
i feel a little late to the Dungeon Crawler Carl craze but I’m nearly done with book 2 and holy shit has it got its hooks in me
I didn’t have a lot of expectations going in but DCC constantly proves that it both has something to say and that it will say, regardless of how much the horror and the absurdity of the universe tries to shut it down. It’s walking a knife edge of balancing humour, horror and humanity because at any moment one could overpower the others and undermine the entire point.
but the comedy doesn’t cheapen the horror, it highlights it. the horror doesn’t degrade the humanity, it contrasts it. the core of humanity lifts up the comedy by reminding the audience how much people want to live
and it’s also so nice to have a protagonist who’s a deeply, fundamentally good person while never letting his role as a near-caricature macho manly man overshadow that. the amount of times he goes against what the showrunners want or what Mordecai says because someone needs help feels special because the World Dungeon is functionally an apocalyptic dystopia for what remains of humanity.
it’s the exact scenario where the audience has been trained to expect every character to act selfishly because everything is about survival. But Carl keeps going out of his way to help people who aren’t as strong as him, because he couldn’t live with himself if he didn’t at least try.
and even with how much the World Dungeon has been gamified by design to dehumanise/depersonalise both the Crawlers and the NPCs such as the Guides and shopkeeps (cough cough capitalism strips you of your personhood in order to generate wealth and strip the land of natural resources) it’s interesting to see where characters draw the line

I can't stop reading Dungeon Crawler Carl
Today's vent:
what if we admitted to each other that it's not always really romance that we want. What if we admitted that what we're really craving is intimacy and society taught us romance is the only way to get it.
