Part 4 of my 'Mark is one of Grace's students AU': Hailing Earth Edition
“Mayday mayday, all hailing frequencies, I don't care if the Hermes, the ISS or Houston picks up the phone, I just need someone to respond. This is Dr. Cpt. Ryland Grace aboard the Hail Mary, currently orbiting Mars. Does anybody read me?”
Grace looked over at Rocky at the other end of the command centre, who had crafted the antenna that allowed this boosted radio-signal to get send out into the universe. Another hail mary in a long string of hail mary's.
“I repeat, Ryland Grace aboard the Hail Mary, does anybody read me, over?”
Grace turns around to face Mark. “Any specific frequencies you were using down there? I’m afraid my phonebook might be horrendously outdated by now.”
“No radio connection for me, unfortunately. I didn't have a functioning system. We managed to send written messages. 6 minutes to get to earth, 6 more minutes for their reply to get back to me.”
Mr. Grace shakes his head in disbelief. “The more I learn about the conditions you survived in, the more impressed I get.”
Suddenly, the radio crackled to life.
“…lease repeat identity of craft? …eems impossible. Please repeat identity, over?”
Grace swirled the pilot chair back around to face the radio system again.
“I repeat, this is Dr. Cpt. Ryland Grace aboard the Hail Mary. I seem to be in the habit of doing impossible things. The Hail Mary is currently orbiting Mars, where I happened to pick up a stray passenger. Say, do you guys make a habit out of losing people up in space?”
Mr. Grace added that last line with a wink in Marks direction. “We missed the start of your first message. Who am I speaking to? ISS? Houston?”
Grace stopped talking. Mark whispered; “over.” Grace quickly fumbled with the microphone button. “Over!”
Mark grinned. Some moments starkly reminded him that Mr. Grace - savior of the solar system - was still just a middle school teacher with zero astronaut training.
The next message came through almost immediately. Messy and cacophonous, because multiple people seemed to be shouting in the background.
“Welcome home Dr. Grace. You are currently talking to NASA command centre in-”
“-OH MY GOD HE’S GOT WATNEY!”
“-impossible. Fucking impossible!”
“-went back for that alien, right? How is he here?”
“-omeone contact Mr. Kapoor.”
“-MEONE CONTACT THE HERMES!”
“-should have run out of fuel… he should have run out of FOOD!”
“Oh my god, do you think he brought the aliens?”
The first voice came back over the radio. “SHUT UP BACK THERE!”
“Like I said, you are currently talking to NASA command centre in Houston. Nice to hear your voice, Dr. Grace. From what I know of the Hail Mary, she cannot handle re-entry into the atmosphere. Your best bet is docking with the ISS, since that is where the Mary was assembled. We will contact the ISS and calculate an intercept course. Any information on the Hail Mary and her passengers would be welcome. Think structural integrity, think medical status, things like that. Over.”
“That’s a lot of questions. Yes, I am Ryland Grace. No, I am not dead. I have Mark Watney aboard and I have Rocky the Eridian on board. I have plenty of fuel, courtesy of Rocky, but food is indeed an issue. I’ve been able to sustain myslef with a combination of farmed Taumeba and food synthesised by the Eridians, but neither are nutritionally sufficient. I’m alive, I have just enough calories, but you dont want to know how many vitamin deficiancies I currenlty have. Add to that my brand new severly malnourished passenger, and nutritionally balanced, calorie-dense rations are our biggest priority. For now, I have enough calories for Watney to recover from the worst deficit. I never lost a student on a field-trip before, and I don’t intend to start now.”
“As for the Hail Mary, shes an old lady, but Rocky is a wonderful engineer with access to stronger materials that we have ever been able to make on Earth, so any malfunctions have been no problem for him to fix. The original airlock has had some… modifications, but I don't think docking with the original lock on the ISS will be a problem. Over.”
“Copy, Dr. Grace. We will get that intercept course to both you and the ISS. We will stay in close contact now that we have found you again.”
