When the queer subtext of Stranger Things becomes the text, what is the subtext now?
There are usually like 3 layers going on, the plot, the subtext, and something else.
We have been decoding the (queer) subtext for years, but there’s still something else.
It’s their way out… it’s them speaking in codes to each other to escape *whatever* they are in.
Like, yes, Robin has a bad gaydar sure… BUT, she’s also very smart and knows like what 4 languages!?
We know that the show uses coded language on many levels, and we know Robin speaks multiple languages. So, maybe Robin has a bad gaydar in English. There are specific languages queer people have used in the past to speak to each other, like dialects that they’d only speak with other queer people. She’s trying to constantly find ways to use this coded, queer dialect to talk to other queer people (and also teach them how to speak it and decode it, like working backwards almost. Becoming fluent somehow before knowing what any of it means)?
Let’s just say the snowball became an avalanche.
And then, like a lightning bolt, it strikes her. Could he…? She searches for the right words to ask when —

She is searching for the right words (to convey that they are stuck because of the Snowball) to ASK him (if he knows, if he understands)… what exactly?
THIS is a moment where they are actually forming a plan for escape from whatever they are. They are searching for the best way to communicate IN CODE to each other the necessary information to plan a ginormous prison break.
