Iâm not even sure I can be considered real. Iâm a phantom. A mimic. A mockery of human kind. But...

Gray Labs was originally created during the Second World War. Â The purpose was to create perfect soldiers. Â This started with the A class, who were soldiers who signed themselves up for experimentation. Â Several of them died, though some of them found themselves with increased strength or senses.
After the war, Gray Labs continued its research, and began working on creating itâs soldiers in test tubes from parents who were as close to genetically perfect as could be found. These subjects, Classes B though E were the next generation of soldiers.
From there, Gray Labs started working with genetically engineering the embryos, adding various compounds. Â These failed, or resulted in twisted mutations that needed to be put down. These were Class F through R.
It wasnât until the S class that they succeeded in creating superior soldiers. Â These soldiers were stronger, faster, and had better senses than their predecessors. Â They also had something extra. Â Each had some ability that would commonly be found in comic books. Â The things of science fiction.
100 were created. Â All 100 were perfect. Â Of course, with all children, there are some rotten eggs in the bunch.
Subject S008, named Alexander, showed signs of refusing to kill despite being ordered to kill a rabbit. He refused to follow any such orders without a proper reason. Â He wasnât going to eat the rabbit. Â The death was pointless.
As he grew, there were more such issues. Â But it wasnât until it was time for him to enter the breeding program (as he wasnât fit for field work) that they became truly aware of how much of a disaster he was for them.
Gray Labs had hoped to at least recoup their losses by breeding him with one of the female subjects of his age group. Â But he had clearly been showing signs of sexual interest in another male subject. With no reason to keep him around, the order was given to terminate him.
Of course, you shouldnât send a bunch of normal humans to take out such a science project. Â He was able to subdue his attackers, remove the tracking device that was implanted in his neck, and flee from the labs.
He hasnât been seen since.
Not that the labs are really willing to look. Â Why waist more money on a failed subject? Â Itâs not like heâs going to kill anyone.

After freeing himself, Alexander began wandering. Â He had no food. Â No money. No clothes but those on his back (which were strained with blood from removing his tracking device). Â It was by pure luck that an older couple took him in. They had lost their son a long time ago, and were hoping for a second chance. Â Alex played the perfect son, and they helped him flourish.
Alex was 18 at the time of his defection. Â He is now 23, and attending college while deciding if he should take up some heroic mantel.
He took the last name of Gray so that he would always remember Gray Laboratories and the horrible things they were capable of.
