“Yeah! Because he’s a fucking Komodo dragon!” Bucky snapped now.

Clint blushed as Bucky laughed. The fact that he had made him laugh again made him so very happy. He wasn’t used to this at all but he was enjoying it.

“Well I would hope you like history. You are the history teacher, right?” He chuckled, leaning back in the chair he was sitting in. “How about… your birthday, what you like to do in your free time, where you went to school and what for…? Stuff like that.”

Bucky thought for a moment before responding. “Alright, my birthday is March 10th, I went to Boston College for history and education, and- oh god I’m gonna sound real boring- I like watching history documentaries.” He said, then realized that he really needed to save himself. He couldn’t sound completely lame like that. “I also like hiking and I used to really be into fixing cars.”

No, he still sounded lame.

“What about you?”

Clint nodded along, a smile on his lips. "Well that's interesting." He chuckled. "You honestly don't sound boring. Better than me. I went to a small college in the middle of nowhere for the education of children for the Deaf and hard of hearing." He shrugged.

"I have been deaf since I was a kid. Bad accident. Uh, I lived with the carnival for awhile. Pretty great marksman." He boasted.

Clint smiled. “Bucky... I like it.” He had honestly never heard that name around this part of town. He really did like the name, especially how it rolled off his tongue. The blond smirked at Bucky as he ordered a drink for the both of them. “Trying to get me drunk, are ya?”

Clint followed along with the slow signing, actually quite surprised that the other knew at least a little ASL. The blond nodded as he quickly read the notepad again. He took one of the pens that the bartender had left when he was trying to take his order. “Should I write too?” He wrote before handing over the notepad.

“Or talk. I can talk I suppose.” He laughed. How had he not thought of that before?

Bucky chuckled when the man talked.  “Go ahead and write or talk, whichever is easier for you,” he wrote.

Clint thought about it for a moment. On one hand, talking would be easier but it was so loud... but writing would take forever! “Talking it is. I’m Clint. Nice to meet ya.” He said, making sure he was probably speaking loud enough for the other to hear him.

A smile spread across his lips. “Yeah, I can’t say I was much better, honestly. I have been deaf since I can remember and sometimes I would just take out my hearing aids.” Clint rubbed the back of his neck.

“I might just get a grilled cheese. Is that too childish?” He asked as a small blush spread across his cheeks. Clint wanted to impress Bucky and seem like a proper adult but a grilled cheese sounded amazing.

Bucky chuckled a little. “Oh god that’s fantastic.” He laughed, grinning.

“No, go for it.” He said, waving it off. “Their grilled cheese is fucking legendary.” He took a moment to admire the light blush on Clint’s face. He was cute as hell.

A waitress walked up to the table, flashing them both a kind smile. “What can I get for you two?”

“I’ll get the lobster BLT.” Bucky said.

Clint couldn’t keep the smile off of his lips. He had made Bucky laugh. “I still do it during our meetings sometimes. I get the principle has to tell us what is going on but does he really have to drone on for that long?”

The waitress came over and he quickly ordered himself a soda and his grilled cheese. When she asked what kind of grilled cheese, he froze. “Uh, whatever is your favorite?” He asked her softly. 

As soon as she left, he turned back to Bucky. “So... Tell me about yourself, James. I realized that I don’t really know much about you.”

So many people nowadays mumbled and the blond hated having to ask what they had said a thousand times. “I was really excited to come here.” He said with a nervous chuckle.

“Oh, they judge you all the time. It’s something you have to get over. People walk into my class and they see how much of a slob I am. I don’t give a fuck so they deal with it. It just comes with time.” He said with a grin. “Plus they are teenagers… they aren’t so bad.”

Bucky smiled wide, really glad that Clint was happy to be around him.

“One of my students told me that the kids were gonna tear me apart.” He said, almost a little worried. “Honestly, I feel like a lamb being stalked by a pack of wolves.” Bucky shrugged a bit. It was like they were just waiting for him to mess up. He was the youngest teacher- the new guy. “I was just like them too. I never listened.” He was sure Clint already knew that. There were plenty of times where past teachers of his would just talk about how bad he was- of course they never meant any harm by it though.

Clint couldn’t help but laugh. “You? Not listen to your teacher?” He asked, sarcasm dripping from each of his words. “I would never have guessed.” He gave a very flirtatious smirk to the man across from him. Why? Clint had no idea.

“They will get used to you after awhile. You just have to make sure they know you won’t be completely effected by their words and taunts in the moment.” The blond looked down at the menu and sighed. This place was actually quite expensive and he had no idea how he was going to pay for it with his doctor’s appointment coming up but he would get by. “What do you recommend here?”

The music pulsed. It was playing so loud he could feel it–just the way Bucky liked.

But despite the music, despite all the noise coming from people, it was a man across the bar who wasn’t making any kind of noise that caught Bucky’s eye. The blond man leaned against the bar sipping his drink, not talking to anyone.

Bucky was ready to go over and talk to the guy, when he saw him sign something to the man behind the bar, and the bartender signed something back.

So the guy was deaf. Bucky’s sign language was rudimentary at best. He needed to come up with a different plan. Fortunately, Bucky always had a pen and smalle memo pad on him, never knowing when they could come in handy.

He walked over to the man and placed the pad and pen on the bar in front of him. On the open page of the memo pad was written, “Buy you a drink?”

Clint’s friend, Natasha, had somehow managed to drag him to the club. He hadn’t wanted to go but she put on those puppy dog eyes and said that she didn’t want to go alone. He couldn’t say no after that.

The blond had been to clubs before and he knew how they had messed with his hearing aids. There was something about how loud the music was and how loud everybody in the club was due to the loud music... It wasn’t a good combination, so Clint left his hearing aids at home by his bed. Natasha said she would help him if he needed anything.

Then she left him alone and he couldn’t find her. Thank god that the bartender knew a little bit of sign language. He at least knew the sign for beer, another, and no more. Clint managed to order himself a beer and another one once that one had disappeared.

It took him by surprise that a man had walked up to him with a small little notebook that he had written in. Clint quickly scanned over the sentence that he had written, a smile on his lips. The blond nodded, signing no more to the man behind the bar. Clint turned to face the stranger and signed quickly, “You sign? I write? Which one?”
