Apologies, it has been a while and a an unposted update as I've been juggling a lot in life while trying to catch back up with my writing.

This chapter is...perhaps not as optimistic as one could hope for in seeing our protagonist again, but the story has insinuate itself in a way to me that needed to push some things before the end...perhaps to be elaborated further in the next few chapters as well. War is not pretty. It never has been, and never will be.

It's always interesting exploring more of the larger setting as I've envisioned it and letting the story tell itself outside of Samus or even Adam's PoVs. This chapter and its focus have been a while coming as we at last come to the often of Capitol of the Galactic Federation, Daiban.

Or as I call it, bargain bin Coruscant(with a hard c, as it is properly pronounced in latin, thank you much. Even 11 year old Jake Lloyd knew that one...)

Another update this month, and we return once more to see what Adam is up to as he finally returns to Sol System in the aftermath of The Tides of War. I admit, his chapters are my way of giving information on the setting at large and some of the history crafted to this iteration of the Metroid universe, but it feels like a natural place to open that window into the larger universe. We'll get back to Samus soon enough, don't worry.

Edit: also, just to head off confussion, I did rjust earrange the last few chapters to be in proper timeline order following the events of Invasion. Apologies, but it made more sense due to the time progession all the events take place in.

Apologies to my readers for the delay and silence. The holidays were pretty crazy the last couple months, and real life always takes priority. That said, I should hopefully be able to catch back up and resume my regular updates.

That's said, this chapter is of a pivotal moment that, we never really got to see beyond a few panels in the 1986 japanese guide manga, and references in text: the discovery of the Metroid by the Science Reseach Vessel Marina, and the following capture of both the ship and the retrieved specimen by the Pirates. The moment was one far too important to just gloss over, and so I wanted to portray what possibly happened with that ill-fated vessel.

You can tell if someone's profile is infected if their profile says 'I support Critics United' or 'I do not have common sense'. The infection also attempts to change the user's email to an email called 'actorzero'. (saying this via ask so that if you answer it'll be more visible to readers than clicking on your notes). It seems PMs are fine as long as you use a direct PM link rather than going through their profile. Stay safe!

Thanks for replying! I poked around on FB and some forums earlier and found a bit of additional info to add to the above. Apparently this whole mess has been caused by a javascript exploit, and it can spread to your profile AND hijack your profile if you’re not careful.

What To Do If You’re Infected/How To Prevent Infection:

Do not view any other user’s profile while logged in! If you are tech saavy and know how to disable javascript or prevent it from executing, that should work as prevention. It’s also a good idea to delete your cookies.

Check your profile’s raw bio text for any lines of code. If you find anything wrong, delete it all just to be on the safe side.

CHECK YOUR BACKUP EMAILS IN YOUR ACCOUNT SETTINGS. If you see an address that shouldn’t be there, delete it and change your password immediately! The exploit adds a new email address to your list of backup emails; using this, the hackers can take control of your account.

A writer update. Glad this one was just before the end of the month. Chapter 17 of Zero Mission is posted, and I must admit, somehow this became the longest chapter thus far of the story. Ironic for an Adam chapter, though reason being, it's my first time writing a space fleet battle sequence, and I didn't want to get lazy, or badly done in representing the military of the Confederation. Truthfully, I'm still not sure I did right, but, it is what it is, and at least helps tell the story I see in my mind's eye. Plus, I hate seeing people write the Pirates off as a joke. I wanted them to be a very dangerous and viable threat that is becoming more and more dangerous to the point no one can ignore them. Kinda makes you wonder how long Zero Mission took place after Samus left the Galactic Federation. Samus’ hair had already grown out long enough for a ponytail (compared to the “Young and Naive” flashback), so it couldn’t have been that long of a time.

According to canon, about three years between when she left the GFed police/army/whatever they rename it to, and the Zero Mission.

But it's not like Other M was even consistant with itself. Said ponytail is missimg during the flashback where she left and walked away from Adam.

just a small anecdote. I had a friend who worked in theater; she was the stage manager and an actress came to her in tears one day because the director absolutely refused to let her do a choreographed fight scene in less than 3 inch heels because “they’re platforms so you’ll be okay.” My friend, who is a woman’s size 10, brought her own heels in the next day and DEMANDED the director put them on and try the choreography before the actress did it. He finally agreed to change it, without putting the heels on.

so like I know you might think of “all those women on tv fighting in heels” as fictional woman who WOULD hurt themselves in real life, but its fiction so its okay…except those women are portrayed by real actresses who are actually fighting in actual heels, being directed by dudes who have never worn a pair of heels in their lives, alongside men who aren’t expected to constantly wear things that make their stunts 2x more dangerous than they have to be. Just a thought.

A number of stuntwomen have spoken out about getting injured on sets because the character is wearing heels and skimpy clothing that provide no protection or padding. It literally harms rl women.

Not gonna lie. I’m psyched that Ridley is in Smash, but I feel kind of bad for Samus. Not only did E3 completely skip over Metroid Prime 4, but the trailer for Ridley in Smash had him killing her two friends, taunting her about it, and then kicking her ass.

2. The first scene written was actually Samus making her departure from Mountain Point Academy, which was the original prologue, then became chapter 1 proper.

4. Um…not as of yet do I have a favorite bit of dialogue. Though to be fair, I have the most fun with Samus and her Bird Dad, Maru.

9. Oh, there’s always alt versions of chapters in little ways, if you coint the various updates and tweak I’m always doing.

Finally, a month later, Zero Mission is updated with Chapter 13 - the Harbinger. I'm finally getting into the kick-off of the actual Zero Mission story. It's only taken since...I think October last year is when I started. So, for those who have been reading, and waiting for some actual Metroid action as the story promised... it's just about go time. As always, either here or as a comment or review on the story itself, I love getting feedback and discussion. Keeps me from thinking I'm posting to dead air. My feelings about Other M as a whole aside, the Melissa Bergman/MB plot was one that REALLY deserved a better place to be executed, because it could have been AMAZING if not bogged with the mechanical and storytelling issues the game had. I still believe that had Other M been set up as a prequel of sorts, maybe even taking place before Metroid 2 and Super, and cut the Ridley Clone subplot, it could have set up so much more than just repeating Fusion's key points just before Fusion would have occurred.

While we’re on the subject of tumblr’s shortcomings as a fandom platform, I want to say one more thing. I’ve been thinking lately about how it’s really important to remember that fandom isn’t just on tumblr, but on AO3 as well. One angle that I don’t see people talking about a lot with regard to commenting on fic is that it’s another level of interaction that I don’t think fandom can live without–not just because it fuels writers, but because it can fuel readers too.

Over the course of my fandom life, I’ve gradually worked my way up to leaving more and more detailed comments (not necessarily always longer, but definitely more specific) and let me tell you–it’s incredibly rewarding. Just recently, I left a comment that prompted a writer to share a lot more about what they were thinking while writing the fic and to give me a rec for a fic with a similar theme to the one they wrote. Sometimes writers will reply to comments by going into more detail about the headcanons they have for characters or explaining more backstory for a part of the fic that I mentioned liking. I’ve had people follow me here on tumblr after I commented on one of their fics on AO3 (and as a writer, I’ve followed people who have commented on my fic too–if I can find them here), and from that, sometimes new friendships arise.

What I’m trying to say is that the importance of comments as an aspect of fandom interactions can’t be overstated. It’s not just about stroking a writer’s ego. You can get things out of it too, whether it be a new headcanon to think about, an insight into the creative process, or even a new friend. Being specific about the parts of fic you like can give writers the confidence to write more things in the same vein or to write more period. Back in the LJ days, fic and personal posts were all mixed in together, so it was easier to have those kinds of interactions, but now that those worlds are split, I think it’s even more important to remember why commenting is important and what it can do for fandom as a whole.

So next time you’re leaving a comment, I challenge you to view it not as “paying your dues” for reading the story, but as an opportunity to interact with the person behind it. You don’t have to be long-winded. Tell them what your favorite part of it was. Pick out something that was unique about it and ask about their inspiration. Talk about how it made you feel or what it reminds you of. You won’t regret it.

100% For me, comments are about the interactions I can have. The conversations between readers and writers can be silly or heartwarming or analytical or anything else in between, but those conversations are such a wonderful thing.
