Hiii, I am not sure if anyone is interested in what brushes I'm using for my art, but hot artists don't gatekeep their brushes, so I'm going to be annoying and make this post anyway :D I use Photoshop to draw, but the brushes can also be opened in Clip Studio Paint, and some have Procreate versions.

The free brushes are really more than enough (and they have most of my faves), so don't worry about buying brushes other than for supporting some awesome artists and getting more variations of a certain brush type (for example, some artists who offer free brush packs also have paid versions). All the paid brushes that I'm listing here are in the 1-10$ range.

When I search for new brushes, I usually look for some really cool styles and how artists use their brushes to create said style, and I try to emulate that to learn from it (though I suck at that xD). Sometimes artists also offer videos to show how they work. However, I keep falling into the trap of believing that getting new brushes will change the look of my art, and I'm warning everyone that that is not the case. Don't make the same mistake as me and think that that will 'fix' stuff (whatever that means). Love and embrace your style because that's what makes your art unique <3

learn composition rules! i wish i knew of a book i could recommend. i just learned stuff at uni 😭 i found this website i guess thats something to start with

as for ideas i found naki's guide really useful!! im glad its still online

study other artists work and try to work out how they approach composition

i mostly started with "what if i added a little something in the background?". it was mostly patches of grass. or some flowers (its still mostly flowers haha)

with time your visual library will expand and you will grow more confident with it. have fun!

Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

I don’t do tutorials usually, but I get asked about this a lot! I don’t think many people have thought of it.

if you don't mind me asking and you have the time: how do you do an art study? (and sidenote: what constitutes as copying more than studying? I transfer a photo onto a canvas and go off the photo. Does that even help me?) if you don't have the time, then just thank you for your time!

Master studies are where you copy an art piece to learn the style and simplification a master artist uses (think of it like cooking from a recipe).  You can study the whole thing, or just do a value study to learn their edgework and value groupings, or maybe you could trace their work and paint it in to learn their color sensibilities. 

Photo studies basically take your own style and knowledge and problem solving and put it to the test when copying a photo (like making your own version of a recipe).  Again you could isolate for colors, texture, value, anatomy, etc., or do the whole thing.  Choosing stills from cinematic movies/shows (Game of Thrones!!!) will give you an easier reference to work from, as the cinematographer has already created a pleasing image for you.

Either way, it’s copying for the sake of learning and putting critical thought into the purpose of each stroke, fundamentals, etc etc.  I recommend having the reference side by side with your study and you can put it on the canvas or use one of the reference apps available.  There’s no right or wrong way to do it as long as you are learning.

If you could recommend any of Max Ulichney's brush packs for someone who's trying to achieve a similar amount of texture as the one in your art, which one would it be?

Hello! Funnily enough I don't actually use much of Max's brushes anymore, I could never quite the hang of them... I mostly use Joe's sets. Crunchy.

I do the get question about brushes a bunch though so I'll use this space to point out the eventual outcome can be quite different. The way you use brushes, the way you work, canvas size, pen pressure... it all makes a tremendous difference! Fun example below of my inks and my bestie's @vivtanner 's lines with the same brush.

Same goes for textured flatting/shading brushes ofc!

I'd be interested in seeing a comparison to your brush settings as well. I love both inking styles, but I usually have to switch brushes to get such distinct looking lines!

no brush settings from either of us, I'm afraid! Though Viv uses the streamline function sometimes, mine is always 0. I execute very light pressure on the pen and do quick lines, while Viv has quite the firm pressure but pulls slower lines. However, my pen pressure setting is different from Viv's too, if that is what you mean?

Tuesday Tips - Floating Hands I use this a lot when storyboarding a first pass of a sequence. Placing hands in the right, most appealing position can be tricky. In order to create a clear silhouette for the hands, I often draw them “floating in the air”. Then, using my general knowledge of anatomy, I just “fill in the arms”. This way I can create a much more expressive and clear pose than if I was just radiating out of the torso. That’s when structure and anatomy can get in the way of a clear message. And hands carry a lot of meaning, so I want to make them as clear as possible  for my audience to see them. I would say the same applies to life drawing. Since they often don’t carry the body weight (legs most often do), I feel like i can take the freedom of changing their position slightly to make a better visual statement. -n

For anyone who wants a free pose-able human reference for drawing

The other day I came across this awesome program by accident (I don’t even remember what I was actually searching for, but on the several times I’ve looked for a program like this I’ve had no luck). It’s cool enough that I wanted to share it.

It’s called DesignDoll (website here) and it’s a program that lets you shape and pose a human figure pretty much however you want.

There’s a trial version with no expiration date that can be downloaded for free, as well as the “pro license” version priced at $79. I’ve only had the free version for two days so far, so I’m not an expert and I haven’t figured out all of the features yet, but I’ve got the basics down. The website’s tutorials are actually pretty helpful for the basics, as well. 

Here’s the page for download, which has a list of the features available in both versions.

There are three features the free version doesn’t have:

Can’t save OBJ files for export

Can’t download models and poses from Doll Atelier (a sharing site for users; note that the site is in Japanese, though)

It can’t load saved files

The third one means that if you make a pose, save it, and close the program, you can’t load that pose/modified model later. You have to start with the default model. I found that out when I tried to load a file from the day before (this is why reading is important…). Whether saving your modifications (and downloading models and poses) is worth $80 is up to you. 

But, the default model is pretty nice and honestly if all you’re looking for is a basic pose reference it should work fairly well as it is. Here’s what it looks like:

There’s a pose tag that lets you drag each joint into place and rotate body parts. The torso and waist can be twisted separately, and it seems like everything pretty much follows the range of movement it would have on an actual human.

Even the entire shoulder area is actually movable along with the joint! See, like how the scapular area of the back raises with the arm:

The morphing tag is one of the coolest features, in my opinion. It lets you pick and choose from a library of pre-set forms for the head, chest, arms, legs, etc. It has some more realistic body shapes in addition to more anime-like ones. Don’t like the options there? Mix a few to get what you want! Each option has a slider that lets you blend as much or as little as you want into the design. 

So you, too, can create beautiful things like kawaii Muscle-chan!!

The scale tag lets you mess with the proportions and connection points of different joints. This feature combined with the morphing feature not only allows more body shape variations, but it also means that you can do things like make a more digitigrade model if you want. (The feet only have an ankle joint, but for regular human poses that’s all that you really need, so whatever.)

Or you can make a weird chubby alien-like thing with giant hands and balloon tiddies if that’s more your thing.

The ability to pose hands to the extent it allows is far more than I could have hoped for from a free program. Seriously, you can change the position of each finger joint individually, as well as how spread out the fingers are from each other. Each crease on the diagram below is a point of movement, and the circles are for spread between fingers. 

And to make it a bit more convenient, there’s a library of pre-set hand poses you can pick from as well, and then change the pose from that if you like. 

In both versions, you can also import OBJ files from other places for the model to hold, like if you wanted to have them hold a sword or something.

Basically, this program is awesome and free and you should totally check it out if you want a good program for creating pose references.

i personally prefer to use S-4 for default drawing and S-7 when i need to draw really long smooth lines. this is what it does:

when you enable it, you can use your currently selected brush as eraser. this is what it does:

this is where you find clipping group:

you have to have at least two layers, the base layer and the one for the colors. when you draw on the layer with little red bar on side, the stuff you put on the layer appears only on top of the things you have on the base layer. the effect is p much same as preserving opacity except you dont change anything about the base layer and you can still use layer textures and effects. this is what it does:
