Oh Good, My Dog Found The Chainsaw!

“That sounds apt,” he agreed with a smile. He felt that it was luck that brought him in contact with his friends here, but at some point they did choose to stay together. He chuckled. “I hope that is a fond comparison.” He hadn’t meant to go and become responsible when he arrived in Fableton, but those things happened.

Lilo just laughed, “It is, it is!” At least sort of. Nani still had some of her problems but as she has gotten older, she knows that her sister can’t help it. Really it could not have been easy taking care of her as a teenager. Lilo can barely handle being a teenager herself, so she can’t even think of taking care of a kid.

“No. I have some friends I care for very much though.” His smile softened at her sweetness, and he was genuinely touched by the offer. “That is very kind of you. I think, perhaps, family is not a bond you choose so much as one that happens to you. But I would love to meet them, of course.” He was never opposed to making new friends. “That is certainly a bright side.”

“It is a mixture of both” Lilo chuckled, “You choose to have that bond that happens to you. I think you and Nani would get along very well. She is my older sister and is always telling me that things can’t be done a certain way.” She paused, “Well that’s not true. She allows me to say and do a lot of things. But you do sound like her a little bit just then.” She grinned, “At the very least, Stitch might find you amusing if you read to fish!”

“That is a lovely definition,” he agreed with a small nod. “I’m afraid I have no family in Fableton, but thank you very much. I shall tell my sister about it if I see her again.” He smiled. It sounded like something his soft-hearted younger sister would like. “I’ve heard of it. It’s very beautiful in the pictures. Do you miss it?”

“You don’t have family here?” Lilo frowned, knowing that was just not going to continue. “If you want, you can be part of my family. I know Stitch and my sister Nani would not be opposed at all. Ohana doesn’t always mean blood related family, of course.” Looking around at the ocean, her face softened into longing. “Yeah I do. But it’s okay. I’ll see it again and it is nice that I am here with an ocean still.”

“Ohana?” he echoed curiously. “That sounds lovely. Have the two of you always lived in Fableton?” He hadn’t met many locals, but if they weren’t, that meant they came to Fableton together. He didn’t know very many people from his own world. None at all, in fact, except Thumbelina.

“Family” Lilo corrected, “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. That is the motto me and my sister always had, which Stitch now has with us too. And now you can have the phrase if you want.” SHe shook her head, “We aren’t from Fableton. We are from Hawaii actually. Which is kind of far away from here. A bunch of different islands in the middle of the ocean.”

“I suppose that is the important thing.” He smiled too. Cor had never in his life been friendless since he was the sort of person to make friends wherever he went, but it wasn’t as though he’d never been lonely. He straightened from the tide pool. “Who is Stitch?”

“Stitch is my best friend” Lilo beamed up at the man, “He became part of my ohana years ago and we have been at each other’s side ever since.” Well, for the most part. “He is at school at the moment.” At least that is what she assumed. A part of her still found it odd that he got to be in college while she has to wait till end of the year to be at the university with him.

“You sound as though you speak from experience.” As a general rule, Cor didn’t carry a lot of worry around with him, but his concern for her crept up a notch. As much respect as he had for animals, sentient or not, he’d much rather pay attention to people if they happened to need it. “A capital idea,” he agreed with a chuckle.

“Maybe” Lilo shrugged, smiling up at him, “But that isn’t the case now.” At least not so much. When she was a kid not having any friends was hard. But now she had Stitch and that was the best thing. Even if he was human and going to college now. “I always have great ideas” She nodded, “Stitch always agreed.”

“That’s very kind of him.” Cor came from a world of sentient animals, so it wouldn’t have surprised him in the least to find that they were here as well, even if he couldn’t communicate with them. “Nor did I. I suppose if I were anchored in one place, I would like someone to pay attention to me.” He glanced down at the book thoughtfully. He would hate to ruin something that didn’t belong to him. “Perhaps not, if I stay far enough away and leave before the tide comes in.”

Lilo nodded, looking at all the creatures in the tide pool. “Everyone wants at least someone to pay attention to them. Just a little. Even the small animals in this tide pool. No one likes to be ignored or forgotten.” She grinned, looking around, “Well we can make sure you are in a safe spot, so your book is safe and you can read to the creatures. I’m sure they will appreciate it either way.”

“Bubba?” He gave a surprised laugh, peering down into the tidepool. “It suits him. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Sergeant Bubba.” He gave a salute that was probably more solemn than the occasion merited, but he wouldn’t want her to think he was making fun of her. He took the naming of wildlife with perfect seriousness. “Oh, no. I was only trying to identify some of them. Why? Do you think they would enjoy that?”

“Since you use his full name, I am sure he respects you now” Lilo nodded, pleased that the man didn’t make fun of her. This was definitely a good sign in her opinion. “Some of them might enjoy being read to. I actually never thought about doing that before” She looked down at the tide pools in thought, “Probably those that can’t swim around, like the starfishes and urchins, would like it compared to the other fish. But won’t you get your book ruined?”

“Oh, hello.” He looked up with a smile when he heard someone approaching. He tucked the book more securely under his arm so there was no chance of it getting wet. “Just looking. Do you happen to know what that one is called?” He pointed out a slightly larger fish than the silvery minnows flitting about.

“Well I tend to call him Bubba” Lilo replied, “But I am pretty sure the name is a sergeant of sorts. Sergeant Major? I remember that because his full name is Sergeant Bubba to me.” She grinned, “I think that are various types of him swimming around. Just depends where you are and where to look. Why do you got a book with you if you’re going to hang out by the tide pools? Are you going to read to the fish?”

Cor may have had reservations about swimming after being frozen solid, but he had none whatsoever about walking on the beach. His shoes dangled from one hand, and he’d rolled his pant legs up a few inches so they wouldn’t get damp. He found the tide pools endlessly fascinating even though he didn’t know the names of half the things in them. He had a library book tucked under one arm to help with the identification when he was back on dryer ground. “Well, hello. What are you?” he murmured to himself, kneeling down to get a better look.

If there is one thing that Lilo was beyond grateful for it was that she still lived right next to the ocean. After trying to ride a few waves, she was walking along the beach, her board under her arm, a bag slung over her shoulder, when she spotted someone near the tide pools. Curious, she put her board and bag down near the edge of the beginning of the tide pools. “Wha’cha doing?” She asked the man as she got closer, looking down to where he was looking.

“I have a dog too!” she said brightly. She paused when Lilo went on with her explanation and laughed a little. “Oh. Well, mine is just a regular dog. He’s pretty smart though.” It shouldn’t have been surprising to find out that aliens were real after everything else that was real in Fableton, but it was a little. “Huh. So aliens are real too. I never saw her tail or anything, so I guess she could have been making it up.”

“Oh that is still pretty exciting! I always wanted a pet. Though Stitch really isn’t so much a pet. Even when they were in a different form.” It was strange to see them in a human form but Lilo had to admit. It definitely made it easier for them to hang out at various places compared to before. Though usually they would just sneak around and that kind of was a lot of fun. “Aliens are definitely real. Though the probing is not. That is just some weird thing that people like to make up. Or maybe there are scary aliens like that. I’ve never met them.”

They popped the book they’d pulled out shut and looked over at her. “Fun it is! Because there’s none to be had in the books right now,” they agreed with a nod. Maybe later when their mind was finding its way onto the right path, it’d be different.

“Okay!” Lilo giggled, standing up, “Let’s go see what fun we can do around here. Especially since school will be ending soon. As well as we have to figure out what to do for my birthday. Cause then I will be an adult too. And can join you at school.”

Olafr immediately jumped into action, Mel unable to hide her smile as she settled onto the sand beside them, offering a few different shovels for her son to use.  “What’s surfing?” Mel inquired, now feeling more and more comfortable asking about things she was unfamiliar with.  Since so many people in town weren’t even from this world, “curiosity” wasn’t uncommon in Fableton.

“Surfing? It’s...” Lilo paused, trying to figure how to explain something she has done since she first learned to walk. “You basically get on a long board to stand on top of the waves of the ocean. It is a lot more fun than how I actually explain it.” She pointed to her surfboard that was only a few feet away, stuck primarily in the sand, “I use that one but there is a lot of different kinds of board. They are like things to help you stay afloat in the water.”

“Mainly, yes.” She nodded. Many of her potions were medicinal. Others had decidedly different uses. If she happened to add a little magic when it was needed, then that was just part of it. When he saw Lilo, the boy offered her the flower instead. “Mommy’s a witch,” he said solemnly. She didn’t contradict him or treat it like one of those silly things children said. “Silybum marianum,” she noted, identifying the plant. “Mind the spines on the leaves.”

Lilo gently took the flower, listening to Morticia and being extra careful with the spines on the leaves. “A witch, huh?” She grinned, “That is awesome! I have never really met a witch before. Do you fly on a broom like they say? You also really pretty and sometimes they make witches look super creepy or scary. But you aren’t that.”

“Patience isn’t one of my best things either,” she laughed softly. From where she was sitting, it looked like Lilo had plenty of patience, at least with building castles. “Who’s Stitch?” Her smile brightened at the offer. “That would be amazing! I met a mermaid who showed me a little, but then I never saw her again. I thought I would probably drown if I tried it by myself.”

“Stitch was my dog. Well, sort of. They were an alien that is also my best friend and we have grown up together in some ways.” Lilo smiled softly thinking about Stitch, hoping that they were doing okay trying to adjust in Fableton. And looking like a human. “Oh a mermaid! That would be so cool to meet one. I never met a mermaid before. Usually just a lot of aliens. They accidentally destroyed my house once.”

“That is one way to look at it,” Snow said, hesitating even as she knew she sounded too kind for what she was about to say.  There was something about her tone that didn’t impart sharpness well.  “But their evasiveness is still rude and uncalled for.”

“I prefer that instead of thinking about the more negative implications of their actions.” Lilo wasn’t naive to truly ignore sometimes she gets brushed off because people are rude. “It probably is. But you’re not being rude. That is something.” She looked around, “Can I ask what do you do around here?”

“That would be ideal in a modern place like this,” she agreed, nodding. It was a very sensible conclusion. She kind of enjoyed the way Lilo’s mind worked. She’d clearly spent a lot of time thinking about this. “I work as an apothecary.” She leaned forward slightly as the toddler approached again, this time holding a milk thistle gingerly by the stem.

“An apothecary?” Lilo paused, thinking about the word, knowing that she definitely has heard of it before, “Like... You deal with medicines. Stuff you made or whatever.” She is pretty sure that she got that right. Glancing over to the toddler her face brighten, “Hey, he brought another thing for you!”
