For every super power in existence there is someone who is immune to it. You are immune to ‘Time Stopping’, allowing you to move around in the time frozen world like the user does. However you have no idea who they are or when they will stop or restart time.
This sounds like a really confusing way to go through life. Sometimes things pause at a convenient moment! You get to catch the stuff you dropped, or finish a project by the deadline. Other times it just stops in the middle of an emotional conversation and you’re stuck waiting around for time to resume. Can’t wander away, or else they’ll wonder where you disappeared to all of a sudden, and it’s not like you have any idea how long the pause will be.
But just imagine someone going through all this and finally seeing someone else move during a pause.
Picture a supervillain who can pause time, happily helping himself to some money at the bank, not expecting to get slammed with a chair by some nobody yelling about “I’ve been in line for THREE HOURS, you jackass!”
Today, my therapist was talking about how the smallest bits of self-care — even making yourself a mug of warm tea — are a way of recognizing your own worth, and how meaningful they are when you really dislike yourself. “After all,” she said, “I don’t know about you, but I don’t often make tea for people I hate.”
And that really hit me, especially because I’m an acts-of-service kind of person and tea is one of my go-to ways to show people that I’m thinking about them, care about them, and hope their day could be a little better. So maybe when I make tea for myself, I’m saying that to myself, too, that I’m thinking of my own needs, caring for myself, and trying to make my day a little better.
And that’s really important to me because a lot of days I struggle to do basic things to keep myself going and just feel like I’m self-destructive, only ever making things worse… but most days I still manage to make myself a mug of tea or two. And it’s good to know that that matters.
Love, by the old philosophical definition, is willing someone’s good. It’s not essentially a feeling. Which is kind of comforting to think when you don’t feel like you like yourself at all, but you’re still trying in some kind of way to do good things for yourself.

the thing about cracking open a long-established popular ship tag on ao3 is that it allows you to be extraordinarily picky, and i think it must be the closest thing i will ever experience to being filthy rich. i scroll along at super speed like no today i am only interested in fics with this precise range of words and one of these three tags. only authors i’ve heard of, please. hmm, i suppose i could consider an unknown quantity given its apparent popularity with the people, but… no, no, this summary doesn’t do it for me. no particular reason, it’s just… eh, i don’t need to explain myself. bring me 50 more like this for me to choose from and we’ll see.
you are not a machine. you are more like a garden. you need different things on different days. a little sun today, a little less water tomorrow. you have fallow and fruitful seasons. it is not a design flaw. it is wiser than perpetual sameness. what does your garden need today?
Jane Austen really said 'I respect the "I can fix him" movement but that's just not me. He'll fix himself if knows what's good for him' and that's why her works are still calling the shots today.
