‘Everytime I return,’
‘I say nothing ever changes, and it’s true. Nothing ever changes.’
Feeling triumphant, Amber relaxed her shoulders and let a bright smile pull the corners of her lips up. “Undeniably abhorrent.” Those were about the largest words that she knew so she hoped he wasn’t going to peg her as a wildly studious and intellectual girl. Amber’s smarts held weight in the streets and the sheets, not books. “All I ask is that you try. She obviously doesn’t listen to me, but why would she? All I do is dance for money, you are something much more frightening entirely.”
Shrugging, Amber looked over her shoulder at the closed window. “I know that I strut around like a peacock, but contrary to popular belief, I am great at being invisible. I’ve had practise. People know that I’m out, but as far as they know I’m visiting my family for a few hours because my sister had a spelling bee.” Amber raised her glass in a silent cheer before drinking. “No one knows I’m here.”
Daniel rolled his eyes. “Oh please, you’re trying to flatter me now, by telling me I’m frightening.” Daniel smiled, pouring himself another flute. “She’s like every other good businesswoman, she wants to attain the best, is that so wrong?” Daniel smiled. “Is it so bad to be with us? I’ve got the feeling that she’ll pay a higher salary.”
“Oh, not you too.” She groaned, raising her hand to pinch the bridge of her nose. “You can’t even talk to her or mention something? Come on, Daniel. I’ve heard about you. You can untie your hands if you want to. I believe in you.” She took the glass and crossed one arm over her chest. “So, you’re telling me that you’re Daniel Heart and you can’t talk to one measly woman? Can you tell me what you can do?”
Daniel laughed at her tease. “It does sound appaling when you say it like that, doesn’t it?” He shook his head, chuckling still. He hated giving false hope. Ariadne doesn’t have to listen to him, though he’d never gave her a business proposal before. He might as well give it a shot. “OK, ok” He held up his hands in exasperation, smiling. “I will visit her tomorrow and see what I can do. I cannot make any promises, Amber, but I can do my best.”
He took a sip, surveying the woman in front of him. “It must be dangerous for you to come to my apartment like this. Did anyone see you?”
“She’s persistent and I’m tired, Daniel. I’ve told her countless times that, no offence, i don’t want to work for her or you or your family. The White Diamond is my home and she won’t quit. It’s honestly getting a little desperate? Pathetic? Uncomfortable?”
Daniel nodded thoughtfully, listening to Amber rant. He liked her, and didn't mind listening. It did seem troubling that one of his mother’s employees was haggling a Diamond, though he could see why Ariadne wanted Amber badly. She was a fantastic dancer, he had seen her at work, though he doubt she saw him. “I’m afraid my hands are tied.” He said apologetically. “Just because I’m her boss’ son, she’s not going to listen to what I say.” He poured the champagne into two flutes and offered her one.
“I admire your loyalty, but can I say, that I see her point?”
Looking down at her salad, she picked up another cherry tomato and popped it in her mouth. “Anything wrong with that?”
“Nothing,” Daniel smiled. “I went through a salad phase, not that I’m saying you’re having a phase, just that I knew it was not for me.”
“Oh.”
“Well you could stay for tea, or something stronger. Unless the meeting with my mother went south, then I’m afraid I’ll have to use this on you.” she said, waving the axe at her side.
‘Where did you get that axe anyway?” Daniel asked. He looked at his watch. He had time. “Yeah, I would like some tea, my conversation with your mother went well. She offered me some cookies.” He brushed his lapel and a few crumbs fell off. “So, it was a good talk.”
Amber could not deny that she liked the slide of skin over skin when he took the bottle, but she distanced herself from him as he closed the door just to see if he would follow. “Well,” she let the syllables drag out and pretended to really think hard about her answer. “See, I’ve got this small issue. It’s named Ariadne. I’m sure you know her, right?” The brunette dropped her gaze, turning coyly shy as she got to her point. “Make her leave me alone, Daniel. You can do that right? You have power.”
Daniel smiled and folded his arms, surveying her. “What has she done to you now?”
“Though I have no doubts in regards to your capabilities, Daniel – this is one job you won’t be going near. If anyone get’s to cross out her name, it will be me.”
“But… there is something you can do….”
Daniel nodded thoughtfully.
“Shoot, what do you need me to do?”
Charlie sighed seeing it was Daniel and continued to flicker the lighter. “Nothing. Absolutely nothing.” He assured, wanting Daniel to walk away. But, he knew that he was still standing in front of him. Biting his inner cheek, his eyes were drawn back up as he went to put the lighter away, “I wasn’t going to smoke. I was just bored.” He lied. Wanting to change the subject, he noticed the bag, “What’s in the bag?”
Usually, Daniel hated it when his siblings lied to him, it always led to catastrophic circumstances. Now, he saw it as a sign that his youngest brother still had some innocence left. He dropped the interrogation. “A bunch of sweets. There’s a new bakery downtown and they make the best cinnamon rolls, apple flake pastries and all the tarts. I’ve got your favourite custard fluffs, though I’m not sure if you still like it or not.”
She lowered the weapon once she recognised the face, “Okay, want to tell me how the hell you got in here then?”
“I was let in. I needed to see your mother and I just left her office.”
“but I guess I’ll head off now. It’s clear that you don’t welcome me.”
“No. We have stock with Luxco. I know the CEO of Bacardi.” Marcus rubbed his eyes. Even with a full nights sleep, he still felt a little groggily. “…And you shouldn’t. I just needed a pick me up. It’s fine.”
Daniel didn’t say anything in return. There wasn’t much to say when he know his father is blatantly hiding something from him. Instead he took a bite of his cheeseburger, chewing slowly to fill the silence.
“Daaaanny. Are you flirting with me? Please tell me you’re flirting with me.”
“Let’s say I am.” Daniel grinned slyly in return. “Let me get you some water, I think you have had enough to drink.”
“No, that seat’s not taken. And yes, I would like some company.”
“Wonderful.” Daniel settled himself on the seat beside her, and pulled out his burger in the paper bag. Unwrapping it, he looked over. “So, is that your lunch?”
“I think that you and I could have a lot of fun with this bottle.” Flirtatious; she tended to be in order to get her way. Biting her bottom lip for only a few seconds, Amber swayed back and forth as she waited for an answer. “Come on,” she begged, “everyone needs to have a little fun every once in a while. We don’t want to die boring, now do we?”
Daniel approached her, a smile on his face and took the bottle, examining it as he held the door open for her. “Chardonnay, huh? I guess that’s a good time.” Closing the door behind her, Daniel put the bottle down. “Tell me why you’re really here, Amber.”
“What I wouldn’t give for a cup of coffee laced with Everclear right about now.”
“Lucky for you we are in Chicago instead of New York where it is prohibited.” Daniel’s brow furrowed slightly. “I thought you knew the owner of Luxco, can’t he send a crate to you? Not that I’m trying to promote drinking or anything.”
Daniel eyed his younger cousin, feeling slightly suspicious. “Calm down, Allison, let’s talk this out.”
“There are some fiiiine men in this bar. Whyyy don’t I come here more often?”
“Whiskey” Daniel greeted her with a smile. “I could ask you the same question.”
