" . . . . . " Silence , that's all that came out of the magical girl as she stood there. Clutching tightly onto her soul gem as she looked around at the mess she had been caught up in. Truthfully , she was tempted to just shatter her soul gem and get it all over with. But that wasn't - . .
. . . .
Sighing , she closes her eyes and takes a moment before turning away from the edge. Still holding onto her soul gem as she mumbles to herself. No , she couldn't do it. She had to keep fighting. She couldn't give up , no matter how much she wanted to. Taking another deep breath , she opens her eyes and- ?!
Who- ?! Who was this ?! She thought she was alone up here , truthfully. Holding her soul gem close to her chest , she hardly noticed how much it was glowing at the presence of the other. " When- . . How- . . " she starts , clearly still in shock to see someone else up here.
" . . We could just meet up here. I mistook it for a witch's labyrinth anyways. " And truly , if any other magical girl stumbled upon this and thought the same thing , Gretchen could deal with them. " Plus , hopefully , I can lure the worthy ones here. "
Even if Gretchen could appear anywhere Mae asked , she was still a bit nervous. There was a certain person she wanted to keep the witch away from. No one else really mattered. But salvation was also very important. She would just have to keep the person a secret.
" I think if someone wants to help then it's perfect. We could bring even more happiness to people ! " And that idea sounded lovely. Happiness. Salvation. It was all too perfect.
“Here is fine. Bring them here however you wish. Though other magical girls might be hesitant at first. Even still, Either they don’t need to know I’m a witch, or you can make them complicit. Right?” Not that Gretchen would let them live if they said no anyway. “Work at your own pace. There’s no need to rush things. Keep that in mind as well. After all, we have plenty of time, being unable to die normally.”
AU Where Akihiro snaps and agrees to bring everyone salvation, but his version of it is for everyone to end with nothing left behind, and at some point would still challenge Gretchen to a fight.

A h . . The head stroke made Mae like paddy in Gretchen's hands. Closing her eyes for just a moment at the affection. No more worries. No more doubts. No more suffering. Those words repeated in the girl's head as she nodded. No more worries. No more doubts. No more suffering. It was all salvation. Even if she had to use her magic on another magical girl or even fight her. It was all for salvation.
Everything is for salvation.
Making eye contact again , Mae gave another small nod. " . . I will do anything for salvation. " Even if it meant using her magic or killing . . She would do it. Salvation would surely bring eternal happiness to everyone. Just like she wanted. " Whatever you ask of me , I shall do. " All for the sake of Salvation.
A soft smile. “That’s good.” It may seem twisted to most, using her like this. But to Gretchen, salvation was everything. She’d use any method, anything it took, to ensure salvation. “Now then, where should we meet? Once you find someone worthy, you’ll need to find me. How about I let you decide? After all, I can go anywhere, considering normal humans can’t see me unless I want them to.”
For now, she’d let her new pawn do as she wished. No harm in letting the other choose where people were saved. Although, having a sort of cult following sounded useful. She wasn’t opposed to the idea. “And if anyone wants to help, bring them as well. What do you think of that?”

Her magic ? Gretchen wanted her to use her magic on . . them ? Well , she supposed that would make sense. But what if she used too much ? What if she were to corrupt her own soul gem and become a witch ? There was many questions Mae had , but she supposed the witch would have most of the answers. She needed to stop worrying about every little thing.
She wouldn't have to suffer alone anymore. That sentence comforted the magical girl. No longer would she be alone and suffer. Gretchen was here and so were others. Other's that would soon join in salvation. Nodding her head again , Mae held her head up high. " I see. I will do just that then , Gretchen. "
This felt wrong. Helping a witch . . When she should have slain the witch. She was sure if she was caught by other magical girls then- . . . She supposed she would just have to fight. " I will I know if someone is worthy ? "
“Good.” Gretchen would stroke the girl’s head, like Madoka’s mother would do to calm her as a young child. “No more worries. No more doubts. No more suffering. Everything is for salvation. And if another magical girl stands in your way, enlighten her. If she still defies you, you have my permission to kill her, but you could also use your magic on her right?”
She’d push the other a slight bit away, looking her in the eyes. “All you need to do is judge whether or not someone is a good person. If you need to prod them a bit, so be it. You’ll do this for the sake of salvation, won’t you?”

Listening to Gretchen , Mae could hardly believe she actually agreed to this. But it would surely be for the best. After all , she could help give people salvation ! They could all be happy soon ! Everyone could be happy and maybe her wish could actually come true. Happiness. Salvation. That's all that mattered anymore.
All she had to do was find people who were worthy of this salvation. Worthy enough for Gretchen. And for the people that weren't worthy . . ? Mae wasn't sure what to do with them. It would be up to her after all. " I understand. "
If Mae had a nickel for every time they worked for a witch , she would have two nickels. It isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
" What . . happens if a person is worthy but refuses salvation ? " Well , it was a good question. Mae was new to all of this after all.
“If they’re worthy and refuse? Well, then I suppose you’d have to convince them. Maybe even use your magic on them. But, if they refuse me specifically, then I have my ways of...persuasion.” It’s not like Gretchen would take no for an answer. If they were worthy, than they’d choose to accept, or she’d make them accept. Holding the lives of everyone has its benefits.
“You don’t have to worry too much about it. Just bring them to me, I can handle the rest. You won’t have to suffer alone.”

Feeling Gretchen’s arms wrap around her , she seemed to melt in the embrace. It was obvious she hadn’t been embraced like that in forever. Even if it wasn’t a full one. Still amidst her soft crying , Gretchen keeps speaking and she listens. Peaking her head up at the mention of them being alike. And it was true , wasn’t it ?
To think , she had sort of the same magic as a witch.
Though the next part certainly surprised the magical girl. Did Gretchen want her to . . help save others ? She still didn’t believe she was worthy of salvation and yet , this witch . . wanted her help ? Blinking , she sniffles as she thinks Gretchen’s words over. “ You . . want my help ? ” She could hardly believe it herself. Still . . If she truly helped this witch . .
… .
“ I want … to save others. ” Ah. Hardly even caring for herself. But if she could make up for her past in a way , she would take it.
“Of course. Your help would be greatly appreciated.” If Gretchen had more people passing her judgement, perhaps the world would become a paradise all on its own. Regardless, she was here to save people, and leave the rest to rot. “I know it might seem daunting, but all I need you to do is find good people. People you think deserve salvation. Normally, only I can judge. But I’m willing to give you that right. And once you determine who’s worthy, bring them to me, and I’ll handle the rest. As for anyone unworthy...”
A brief pause as she thought of a fitting punishment. Death? Leave them alone? None really mattered to her. “You can decide whether or not they deserve to live. Kill them, or let them be. In the end, it won’t matter. A world full of scum doesn’t deserve to exist anyway.”

Of course. Mae never wanted to cause misery to anyone. She still hardly believed she was worthy of such salvation. Still , she shakes her head no in response to not wanting to cause misery. Hell , her wish was for everyone to be happy. She just wanted everyone to be happy ! And maybe she was selfish for wanting to take away all of their despair.
She would do anything to make them happy. So when she had - …
“ … I - . . I hurt them. “ she admitted , tensing up as she started to speak about the past. “ I didn’t mean to but I - . . I did. I just wanted them to be happy . . !! “ she hardly noticed the tears filling her eyes as her hands gripped her head
“ I used my magic on them one to many times and I forced them to become mindless puppets ! I took away all of their freedom. I didn’t make them happy , I only made them suffer ! “
“I see.” Gretchen thought for a moment before deciding to reach out and wrap her arms around the other. Not a full embrace, but just enough to hopefully make her feel safe. “Wanting them to be happy, and making them happy, can be quite slippery. Though you ultimately caused some harm, your intentions were perfectly noble.” Her power reminded Gretchen of her own, creating a dream like state of paradise, where the very world was made to fit its owner.
“You and I aren’t so different. Our magic manifests in making people happy, but really its all a dream. Am I wrong?” While tempting, she thought of something else, something that might seem sinister to some, but to Gretchen, something to bring salvation.
“If I’m being honest, for all my power, I feel as though I am lacking. Like I’m only half as strong as I should be. In my current state, I could easily bring ruin to this world in little more than a week. But I don’t intend to ruin all those lives. So I’m left with passing judgement individually. I may be powerful, but I’m only one. I’ll give you the option. Allow yourself to be saved, or postpone it, and help me save others.”

The witch of salvation. That name stuck out to Mae and made her tilt her head. Salvation . . Something Mae had longed for for years now. Ever since she learned the truth about her powers and the magical girls , it’s all she ever wanted.
Snapping out of her thoughts , she blinked at the mention of a test. “ I . . passed ? ” Well that was a first. And it was oddly comforting knowing she wasn’t going to be killed or anything. Somewhat.
Mae tense’s up as Gretchen get’s closer and speaks in her ear. Eyes wide as she listens to the witch. She was here to . . save her ? That was the test Mae had passed ? That she was worthy to be saved ? Mae was speechless , really. Unsure of what to say.
This witch was going to grant her salvation ? Even after everything she had done ? She was truly worthy of salvation ? “ I- . . ” Me started , still unsure of what to say. Thank you ? You have the wrong person ? I’m not worthy for salvation ? Do you know how many people I hurt ?!
… .
“ Am I . . truly worthy of being saved ? ”
“...” A bit annoyed at being questioned, Gretchen decided to explain. “I said as much, didn’t I? Perhaps you don’t think yourself worthy, but make no mistake. I am the one who decides such things. So yes, you are worthy.” Perhaps she’d come off as hostile. “It’s really not that hard. Even if you’ve done something wrong, I don’t think you’re irredeemable. Something that differentiates you from scum, you don’t want to cause misery. Do you?” Of course, she figured she already knew that answer.
Still, Gretchen thought should ask about it. “What would make you think you’re not worthy of my salvation?”

“Oh dear. Mae’s eyes widen in surprise as she tenses up. Once again , Mae found herself talking to a witch. It was strange , how she ended up in this situation twice. Letting out a small gulp , she tried to relax. She had to remain calm. The witch hadn’t attacked her at all so there was no reason to fear her . . right ?
” A- . . A nice talk. Right. Okay. “ They were simply going to talk ! There was no reason to be so tense. Besides , Mae had stayed in her normal form and didn’t pull out any weapons on Madoka . . ? The witch ? Ah. Whatever. ” If . . you’re past self is . . Madoka. Then who are you . .now ? “ Was that the right way to phrase it ?
“I suppose I should introduce myself properly. My name, is Kriemhild Gretchen, the witch of salvation. But please, feel free to simply call me Gretchen.” She’d do a small curtsy, just to be polite. But now it was time to get to the real reason she was here. “There’s no need to be afraid. You passed my little test. I’m not going to kill you or anything. In fact, quite the opposite.”
Gretchen would lean in a bit, almost speaking softly in the other girl’s ear. “I’m here to save you, and all others who are worthy of salvation.” Leaning back, she’d give a coy grin before continuing. “If you have any questions, do ask them. Or, would you like to be saved now? Your choice.”

“ … ” Mae was quiet , looking back over at Madoka. She takes a moment , thinking over her choice of words. She never moved away from Madoka though. She didn’t tense up or anything like that either.
“ Do you think it’s possible . . for a witch to be disguised as a magical girl ? Or maybe , a witch that’s taken the form of one ? ” Surely , it was obvious that she was on to the other now. But she hardly treated the other like a witch anyway.
“ Maybe I should ask kyubey .. ? ”
Seems she was caught. “...” A sigh. “No, that’s not necessary.” A sudden shift in tone, one that had a sinister, eerie calmness about it, followed by a change in the way she carried herself. “To be disguised as a magical girl, close, but not quite.”
“See, all I did was observe the memories of my past self, and act accordingly. Not much of a disguise, but one that can fool even close friends and family. Now then, since you’ve seen the real me, how about we have a nice talk.” Not that she was asking, Gretchen spoke with a more confident and commanding way than Madoka.

The grief seed , right. Mae supposed she needed one. Though she had hoped they could have found a witch and killed it instead. The girl felt bad for taking someone else’s grief seed but there was no way she wanted to become a witch.
Gently taking the grief seed , she thanked Madoka. Softly pressing it against her soul gem as she gave a small smile. “ Ah. Thank you Madoka. I don’t know what I would have done without you. ” Truly , she didn’t. Mae got lucky that the two girls stumbled upon each other.
“ We’ll just have to keep a look out. I’m sure the witch or it’s familiars will strike soon. Just don’t know when … ” Mae mumbled , still worried about the witch. “ hmm . . ” Now that she thinks about it some more , her soul gem had always been glowing when Madoka was near by. But that didn’t make any sense. Madoka wasn’t a witch. She was a magical girl , wasn’t she ?
… .
“ Hey . . Madoka , can I ask you something ? ”
“It’s no problem. Really.” While getting the other to use her grief seed wasn’t necessary, at least Gretchen saved her from becoming a witch. Not that all witches were bad, but most had to be destroyed. No matter. She’d hold her hand out to take the grief seed back.
Then came what seemed to be a brief pause. Perhaps realization. Gretchen would continue to play the part of Madoka. “Hm? Sure thing.”

“ Invisible ? ” Well . . That’s truly what it felt like. How annoying that would be and not to mention terrifying. It sent shivers down her spine just thinking about it. Could you imagine ? Having to fight an invisible witch ?!
Sighing , Mae messes with her ring as she gives a small shrug. “ I didn’t think it was possible for a witch to be invisible , but knowing magical girls and witches it . . wouldn’t surprise me. ” Just depended on the girl’s wish and her despair , she supposed.
“ . . Hm . . I think you’re right. Though I feel bad . . Hopefully the witch doesn’t give a witch’s kiss to anyone. I’d hate for someone to get caught up in all of this. ” she admitted.
“I still think that you should use this grief seed. It’s important to keep our soul gems clean.” She’d once again pull out her grief seed and hand it towards the girl. Perhaps that was naïve enough to be believable. Gretchen wasn’t sure what would happen if this one became a witch, maybe she’d have to destroy her, but she certainly wanted to save her. Now it was only a matter of when to reveal herself.

Madoka was right , her soul gem had been glowing brightly for a bit and still no sign of a witch. Letting out another sigh , Mae looked back down at her soul gem. “ . . A familiar ? ”
Now that she thought about it , it did make sense. They could have been chasing a familiar. Even so , Mae wasn’t sure. She mumbles something to herself before shaking her head. The soul gem turns back to a ring and Mae looks a bit defeated. “ I feel like we’re going in circles. ”
They weren’t truly going in circles , it’s just what Mae’s brain felt like. “ Witch or familiar , it has me confused. Where could it be hiding ? ” This was a very sneak witch , unless . . It was hiding right in front of their eyes. Whatever the answer , Mae was getting a bit frustrated. “ Damn it . . ! ”
“Is it invisible? I’ve only seen a few witches before, so...” A slightly dumb question. Gretchen wasn’t entirely certain about the abilities of other witches, so it really didn’t feel like to big a stretch. And the latter statement was true. Regardless, this girl had passed her test. Transforming into Madoka’s normal form, she’d continue. “Maybe we should quit for now. We’re getting nowhere.”

“ Running away from us . . ? I - . . didn’t think It was possible. Unless , of course , the witch was scared. ” Mae would surely be scared if someone was chasing her down to kill her. But then again , witches were just- . . never mind. “ . . Could it be running from us ? ” She repeats , before looking over at Madoka. “ Or could it be . . right here ? ”
No , she still didn’t think Madoka was a witch. Mae has half a braincell.
“Hm? Your soul gem is glowing brightly, but it’s been glowing for a bit now. Are you sure?” It would be best to test the waters. If she pressed it, Gretchen could simply divert or handle the situation in any manner. If she dropped it, she was safe. “I may not know much, and I’m sorry if I’m holding you back, but I have another question. Do you think we could be chasing a familiar?”

“ A couple of months ? “ So basically , Mae was talking to a newbie ? That felt like a lot of pressure all of the sudden. Or maybe it was the need to make sure that Madoka would be safe. “ Ah- . . well. Good thing you found me then ! I can help show you some of the ropes ! Like this trick i‘m doing. if you use your soul gem , it will light up when you get closer to a witch. “ Well , that was obvious. But Mae was still enjoying talking to another magical girl again.
Mae gave a small head nod when Madoka asked if she could ask a question. And upon hearing her question , Mae tenses up. How ironic. Her wish was for people’s happiness as well. “ Silly ? no , not at all Actually , i . . Wished for everyone‘s happiness as well. “ she admitted , letting out a small sigh.
Still no sign of a witch or a labyrinth either. Damn it ! “ Ironic , isn’t it ? “
“I think that’s a wonderful thing. Wishing for people’s happiness.” She thought for a moment, trying to remember how Madoka put it. “If someone says it’s wrong to hope, then I’ll tell them they’re wrong, every time.” Despite being told information she already knew, she didn’t take out a soul gem. It may seem odd, but she was following someone with their soul gem out. A fair bit of reasoning she could use if need be.
But, the lack of a witch would be concerning. No doubt the other would start to catch on soon. “You don’t think it’s running from us, do you? Can a witch do that?”
