So WotC just released some new subclasses for Unearthed Arcana and one of them is the Circle of Spores circle for Druids. 

Let me tell you: Lt. Paul Stamets, mushroom king, is 100% a Spore Druid.

I’m not meaning to offend, but have you watched After Trek for this week’s episode? One of the EPs (who is openly gay) said the decision to kill Culber wasn’t about his sexual identity or destroying the first out gay couple, but it was because of his intelligence- it was his knowledge of what’s happening to Tyler and the fact he confronted him. I know you probably won’t agree, but it’s not always about sexuality- it might be about storytelling. I agree, it’s devastating. I loved our guys.

I have, and as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter that Hugh was killed for storytelling purposes. He is still a gay man (of color, which, hi, DSC’s ten episodes old and has killed off a stupid number of POC) who was killed. The “bury your gays” trope now rarely, if ever, relies on the character dying explicitly because of their sexuality (though if you go back fifteen, twenty, thirty-plus years, that was far more common). The “bury your gays” trope is a means of depriving gay people of a happy ending. Or, in the case of this show, whatever passes for a happy ending - which in this case would constitute surviving to show’s end.

Now. Having said that, I am buoyed by Wilson Cruz’s tweets on the subject, though I confess they confuse the hell out of me and I’m exceptionally cautious. I do believe he - and Anthony - understand intimately the complexities that this storyline entails, and if they thought they’d be doing further damage to their own community, I trust that they wouldn’t have participated. Wilson explicitly said this does not follow the “bury your gays” trope, and while I can’t see how that’s true, I trust him to be telling the truth. What I can’t wrap my head around is how the hell they Fix This so it doesn’t. (And oh, they’d better find a way to Fix This so it doesn’t.)

One of three (3) good things about this episode, the other two being Ash Tyler, the real human, lost and confused but still wanting to protect the person he cares about with whatever mental stability he has left; and Sylvia Tilly finally being a captain like she deserves to.

All interviews, After Trek, tweets, etc. point to this being just a temporary thing - the beginning of a bigger, longer arc for this relationship and these characters. And I trust Wilson Cruz to tell the truth about that. So there’s hope that we may ultimately be satisfied - relieved - not furious balls of grief - whatever - about this in the near-ish future.

And I hope - oh god do I ever hope - that’s accurate.

However.

There’s no amount of Fix It that changes the fact that the violent death of a gay man of color is now part of Star Trek canon. Discovery can’t unring the bell on this one. And that’s going to turn my stomach for a long, long, long time.
