Running is THE DEBIL! However walking is great, and I will point you to a good set of tools:
1. Zombies, Run! - At a measly $4, this app is wonderful for working out, if you like a bit of scifi-horror-comedy action. Don't let the name fool you! It doesn't care how fast you're moving unless you're getting chased.
How does it work? Well, you make a music playlist of your own. Then, go open the app on your smartphone and select your mission (it's best to work in order!) and the playlist to accompany it. The audio will start out much like a story, with someone speaking directly to you over a radio. After the intro, you'll get to hear a song or two from your playlist, and then another bit of story will cut in as someone updates you over the radio on your mission.
If you have chases enabled (and you don't have do!) you'll start to hear zombie groans coming in all around you getting louder and louder. Sometimes the radio will start shouting at you that you're being chased by a pack and you have to put on the speed! When this happens, you double your pace until it tells you that you're safe or the zombie groans have ended. Bear in mind that at no time do you HAVE to run. They'll tell you to run, or to head east, or to make a dash for it, but you never have to do that. The only time your speed matters is during a chase if you have it enabled. Direction never matters, it's just there to put you in the mood.
You can set it to half hour or full hour sessions, but there's no cutoff. Once you finish the mission, the players in the story will banter with each other now and again between songs. The app uses either GPS or an accelerometer in your phone to gauge your distance and speed, and every once in a while you'll automatically 'pick up' supplies.
When your session is over, be sure to swipe to the right to get the menu and head to your base to purchase upgrades like helipads, housing and hospitals to improve the defenses and morale for the people huddling in your camp away from the hordes of zombies that have overtaken the land.
2. Fitbit - This one is a bit pricier, but it's a wonderful motivator and incentive. Again this sort of appeals to my love of games! Fitbits range from $50-$100 depending on the style.
The Fitbit is an pedometer. It counts your steps and keeps track of how active you are. But more than that, it's a reminder of your goal and an incentive. I use the Fitbit Flex, a wristband, and keep it a bright color (I recently bought the red band that benefits heart disease cures) so that I'm always seeing it and being reminded. This little guy tracks your steps and activity times, but that's not all!
Certain Fitbit models also track your sleep patterns. With a quick series of taps, the device enters sleep mode to keep track of how long you sleep, when you were restless, and how many times you woke up and moved around, to help you keep a mental note of your sleep habits.
There are online tools too! The Fitbit site has tools and iPhone/Android apps that let you set tons of goals. For example, I want to burn 2500 calories a day, eat no more than 1500 calories a day, be active 30 minutes a day, walk 2500 steps a day, walk 2 miles a day, and many more! There's something great about logging in to see all those smiley faces when you're meeting your goals!
The online tools also let you enter your foods (it has a lot of food with nutrition info in its database), and other activities (housework, yoga, gardening, weight lifting, raking leaves) to gain credit for those burned calories.
You can get friends to tag in as well, and you have buttons to cheer and jeer at them when they pass you or you pass them on your way to your goal!
It encourages you to set realistic goals. For example, at the most extreme weight loss that it allows me to set, with a thousand calorie deficit a day, I should be losing no more than 2 pounds a week. It keeps track of your weight, blood pressure and pulse if you'll enter them, so you can watch the trends towards being healthy.
Keep in mind that I don't think you have to have a Fitbit to use their site! Go check it out! :D I think the online tools are free for anyone to use, even without a purchase.
Will these work for everyone? Nope! But they're definitely working for me. I was at over 300 pounds and after 8 weeks I've lost 20 pounds and I feel great. I'm set to reach my goal around fall of 2015, and I think it'll be great. I still get a milkshake and cheeseburger for lunch now and again...but that just means that I'll have to eat something different for dinner to offset so I don't go over my calories (I want my smiley face, dangit!), and I'll have to outrun a few more zombies to meet my goal that day. Hah!
