Old W.I.P of Zeus Velchanos 🌧

Started drawing him after reading about The Hymn to Dictaean Zeus. The hymn invokes Zeus as the "greatest kouros," worshipped as a fertility god who welcomes the young initiates at the annual festival at his birthplace, Mount Dicte. In the hymn, Zeus, who "jumps" herds, fields, ships, cities, and young citizens,is called upon to return to Dicte and enjoy the singing that is taking place at his altar.

I mainly experimented with colors in this, and there's still a lot I need to learn before I can finish it. I am grateful to everyone who has given me good advice to move forward. But I had a lot of fun

as much as I do geniunely value academic work on ancient religions & think its very valuable for modern polytheism. my pet peeve is when non-pagan academics (or just history nerds tbh) react to smth like a post by a polytheist, defining their own practice or their own theology, with "well that's not how xyz was done!" "that's not how xyz was originally thought of!" and/or treating modern polytheism like a cool experiment and not actual people's genuinely held religious beliefs.

it all comes down to a lack of understanding of what it means to revive these religions? like they are living faiths. polytheists aren't just cosplay or historical reenactors. and its especially wild when we are talking about faiths that had such diversity over thousands of years, over various different communities, over millions of different individuals.

im not talking about correcting misinformation or providing a new historical perspective. its the attitude of "your faith is illegitimate, or less legitimate, to me because its not just a recreation of what this religion looked like (to me) over 2000 years ago in a completely different time and social context!" that gets to me.

and because of how history works, what ends up happening is whatever wealthy land owning literate men in whatever period of time is most well-known practiced becomes the definition of the entire religion. so queer people and women and people of color get condescended to because their faith is more anti-patriarchal and anti-imperialist. again, in faiths KNOWN to be extremely diverse in thought and practice, with SO MANY practitioners who undoubtedly had much different perspectives than the mainstream one that just didn't get recorded.

polytheists aren't practicing our religions to entertain or impress anybody but ourselves and our ancestors and our gods. you need to engage with modern polytheism as a legitimate and LIVING form of spirituality, not just going through the motions of a dead and static religion from a dusty textbook. & I say that as a lover of dusty textbooks!

Next up: MAIMAKTERIA/POMPAIA RITUAL for ZEUS plus Q n A 11/20 at 4 pm EST: This ritual is a mash-up of two separate festivals from the month of Maimakterion. They include elements of Zeus the Kindly and Zeus the Stormy because of the months atmosphere and historical contexts. The focus of these festivals is purification and propitiation. Led by Xandra (Me and the Owner) this ritual will be about 10 minutes long, and will be followed by a Q and A if anyone has any questions.

Im sick of people pretending to be educators on tumblr/Tiktok for Ancient Hellenic History.

¡!You cant read or skim four books then consider yourself a academic educator in ANY Religion.!¡

WHY?

- Historiography: When learning from these books an educator must also know how to critique or understand the writers bias. Where is their sources (is it focused on one time period? One area?) If not youre learning a muddle mess of something or a Bias point of view. Just because you read it doesnt make it true ( EVEN PRIMARY SOURCES can be BIAS EVERYONE HAS BIAS )

- Atheno-centric sources: This falls under Historiography but its a larger problem for Hellenic Polytheism. Most authors in their introductions notes they will use mainly Athens as a source because of the variety of evidence. Athens is specific in how they work and isnt even close to being the earliest settlement or centralized polis. I mean it wasnt for a while anything compared to Argolis and Sparta; what does this mean? Athens is built on their own specific and egotistical beliefs and wants and it is academically known they muddled the image of many gods to fit their beliefs especially Athena.

- History: If you dont know Mycneanean vs Classical Greece then how can you educate when you dont know that differing and lost gods existed putting holes in the pantheon that were filled? To educate on the gods is to KNOW the early basis of practices so you can understand why and how. Classical Greek practices didnt appear out of thin air people.

- Divserity: The amount of syncretism, diversity and the wide range of polis in ancient Greece make for a Non Canon affect. There is nothing really....taboo in Ancient Greece. Death is seen as Miasmic in most cases but Thessalians would disagree in many cases as they welcomed it much more. The idea of what causes Miasma is also different. Have yall ever seen a map of Greece? Its huge...they werent all the same and didnt have the same gods. I see these same people throwing around "Certainties" which are just echo chambers of non specified sources. Its tiring. What happened in one cult may rival what was taking place in another. Athena can be a unmarried goddess but also a fertility god people.

- Erasure: What is Ancient Greece? When does it start or stop? Why are we seeing earlier practices as taboo in Hellenic Polytheism? Why are we stopping the syncretic behaviors of the Xenios nature? Why are we acting like time stopped. It didnt as someone who has personally been to Greece as a student studying Hellenism the culture was always alive...it never died. To say the Polytheist religion has to be reconstructed because it died is a not a academic take. It has always been alive as the gods have.

you're not a hellenistic pagan.

stop calling yourself a "hellenistic pagan" or "hellenistic polytheist" you are neither.

you can be a hellenic polytheist or hellenic pagan, but not the latter.

hellenistic is a time period which was 323-32 BC. it is literally impossible for you to be a "hellenistic" anything. "what about hellenist?" wikipedia says, "non-greek devotees of the greek gods who embody hellenic ideals commonly referred to hellenists." however...the dictionary disagrees with that statement. the dictionary actually classifies a hellenist as someone living in hellenistic times who took on greek culture and language, but not actually greek. it also refers to it as an academic in language or culture of ancient greece.

✧˚ ༘ ⋆｡˚ i am a hellenic polytheist of 5+ years. i wouldn't put myself into a category of revivalist or reconstructionist...i incorporate some modernity while also paying mind to how things were traditionally. i am not athenian-centric in terms of "tradition" i look towards the islands and (mainly) the peloponnese, emphasis on elis, corinth, and arcadia. within the past year i've dabbled into pre-archaic beliefs and researched that of the minoans and am slowly integrating that. i also pay mind to libyan and north africa due to the relations that athena, triton, and poseidon have there.

Eleusinian Mysteries (2025.)

This piece is born from my reflection on the Eleusinian Mysteries — the ancient rites of death, rebirth, and silent revelation. I imagined the sea as a sacred threshold, a living symbol of descent and return. The figure holds the shell like a vessel of memory, something both fragile and eternal. For me, she embodies the quiet transformation that happens in solitude — when we descend into our own depths and resurface changed.
