Hi! I just saw that X-files post about Mulder and the steam vent and I totally thought of Ten trying the same thing with Rose. It's definitely something he'd do. Haha
Rose Tyler was shuffling through paperwork when her phone vibrated. She glanced over at it, seeing the caller ID read ‘Doctor’, and heaved out a sigh. Nearly six months since they’d both been left in Pete’s World, and he was still settling into human life. She’d had to start remembering to put her phone on silent while at work, because he was always calling and texting because he was bored.
The phone vibrated again. Rose glanced at it again and then, deciding she was alone in her own office and could do as she pleased, picked up the phone to read the messages.
Rose. Come to the corner of Fitzgerald Street and Sutton Road ASAP.
Immediately, her Torchwood training kicked in, and she was on her feet and heading for her office door before she’d even really registered it. She called in for Jake on the way, nabbing the support of his field team as well as hers, and together they headed down to collect the vehicles.
“Did he say what it was?” Jake asked as they got suited and booted.
“No,” Rose admitted, worrying her bottom lip with her teeth. “But knowing the Doctor, it’s probably trouble.”
Not knowing what they were facing, they took some stun guns too, and riot shields in case the unknown creature got violent.
But when the twenty-strong army of Torchwood agents rocked up in their five big black Torchwood-issue SUVs, the corner of Fitzgerald Street and Sutton Road offered nothing more than mid-morning shoppers and some lost tourists. Jake ordered everyone to spread out and do a scan- maybe they were looking for alien tech rather than an alien?
Rose huffed out a sigh then, digging her phone out of the pocket of her thick riot jacket, movement hampered slightly by the bullet-proof vest she was wearing underneath, and dialled the Doctor’s number.
“Knowing him, he’s either been kidnapped, or he’s chasing it somewhere,” she mumbled to Jake.
“Or maybe he talked its ear off and it left,” Jake suggested with a grin.
Rose rolled her eyes, and stared out across the busy London road as a bus trundled past. Finally, he picked up the call.
“Doctor! Where are you? We’re on the corner of Fitzgerald Street and Sutton Road like you said…”
“Turn around,” came the Doctor’s response.
Rose rolled her eyes again. “Doctor, we don’t have time for this-”
Behind her, the steam vent in the pavement was beginning to rise, but Rose didn’t notice. She’d learned to ignore them, in her years on Pete’s World. Her original London didn’t have them, but they just sort of blended into the background now.
“Uh, Rose,” Jake began, grinning as he tapped Rose on the shoulder. “You might wanna turn around.”
But Rose shushed him and shrugged him off. “Doctor-”
“Do as Jake says,” he responded.
Rose blinked. “How’d you know what Jake-” she trailed off.
The other agents were beginning to snicker then, and slowly Rose turned. There, on the steam vent that had risen out of the pavement, was the Doctor. He was grinning from ear to ear, and was one hundred percent alright. He hadn’t been abducted, he wasn’t chasing aliens… He was standing on a steam vent like a dramatic villain in a cheesy film.
“Did you get me down here just to do that?” Rose asked him, looking unimpressed.
He shrugged, still grinning. “Maybe,” he admitted. Then, he took in the fleet of Torchwood SUVs parked along the street, and the twenty-strong team of field agents. “Uh, Rose? Why are they all here?”
Rose blinked at him, glared, and turned on her heels to head back to her SUV.
