I used to use Google docs, but the white mode only was really annoying me (tires my eyes), so I swapped to Ellipsus (which I genuinely love and recommend), but it was bothering me a bit that I need wifi in order to use it, so now I switched to LibreOffice Writer, which I do like.
It very much has a Microsoft Word feel, but is open source and you need no accounts to use it. It's local on your device, so no AI can scan it, and no wifi is needed.
I still wish it had the Google Docs cards, because, bitch, that thing is so good for easy organizing.
So in Google Docs if you go to File > Page Setup, at the bottom there's a drop down menu that lets you change the background color to anything. Mine's set to gray.
I want to get off Google generally speaking but I need an alternative that covers all my bases:
I can turn anything on the page into a chapter header that instantly makes it clickable, this is HUGE for me with chaptered fics and bingo/kinktober docs with 20 different headers.
being able to use it online and offline, and sync between two different devices
on screen word count, obviously
aforementioned background color adjustment
pasting graphics directly onto the page
no adware and distractions, and no limited free use of crucial tools to force you to pay a subscription.
A sprint or to do list/pomadoro feature would also be amazing but all the pomadoro apps are scammy and paywalled and I just find the whole idea of trying to change to new software exhausting when every attempt I've made so far has ended up in disappointment.
