Being ‘hafu’ in Japan: Mixed-race people face ridicule, rejection

Among Japanese, the perception of pure ethnic background is a big part of belonging to the culture

For the first time ever, Miss Universe Japan is a half African American, half Japanese woman. Her name is Ariana Miyamoto, and she grew up in Japan, speaks Japanese, and is intertwined with the culture, yet she has faced a lot of discrimination in her life.

America is finally catching up to Europe, and is about to switch to “dipping” our credit cards rather than swiping.

Starting late August, Beijing enjoyed a rare string of continuously clear days as authorities took drastic action to ensure an azure backdrop for the largest parade it's ever held -- a showcase marking the 70th anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War II. 

It worked. On the morning of the parade, the air quality index (AQI) -- an international standard for measuring the severity of air pollution -- dipped to a pristine 17 out of 500, signifying very healthy air. 

But now the cars are back and the city is back to "Beijing gray."

Friday's AQI shot up past 160 in parts of the city, rated "unhealthy".

According to a guide by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, at this level of pollution "Everyone may begin to experience some adverse health effects, and members of the sensitive groups may experience more serious effects."

Really wish China focused on making its skies blue ALWAYS, instead of just when they wanted to celebrate. Don’t the people of China deserve a better quality of life?

The government is sensitive even to veiled criticism, and in recent days the phrase "parade blue" seems have vanished from China's Internet -- just like the blue sky in reality.

Only three posts popped up when CNN searched the phrase on Weibo Friday, China's popular micro-blogging site.

U of Tennessee withdraws guide to pronouns preferred by some transgender people | InsideHigherEd

The guide notes that many transgender people do not like to use traditional pronouns and that some prefer what would normally be plural pronouns ("they" and "theirs") while others prefer singular words such as "ze" and "hirs." (The full list illustrates this article.) The guide suggests that faculty members not assume anyone's preferred pronoun or gender identity, and that they ask people their preferences and use them.

Check this article out about the University of Tennessee making strides to be more gender neutral. They got some flack for it, as to be expected, but how great is it for a college to try to fight for gender neutrality.

How for-profit prisons have become the biggest lobby no one is talking about

Sen. Marco Rubio is one of the biggest beneficiaries.

Lobbying is the act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in a government. 

Guess where some of the big money is coming from? Private Prisons. Businesses that profit off of people going to jail. Politicians are accepting money from these institutions, in order to influence legislation.

“private prison contracts often require the government to keep the correctional facilities and immigration detention centers full, forcing communities to continuously funnel people into the prison system, even if actual crime rates are falling.”

It’s a billion dollar business, and this problem is begging for reform. Who’s suffering the most from this issue? Children, immigrants and the poor.
