Just been thinking about my man mezo shoji. He's an underrated gem of a character yk. I love him so much and I just feel like he needs more appreciation. Same with the other characters like koda, jirou, sato and many more. I love these characters sm 😭

‘one for all was made to save’ no it wasn’t! it was a stupid accident forced on an unwilling participant, and then it was a weird gift from a dead friend, and then it was a self-fulfilling death prophecy because it was both a beacon for a monster and ostensibly the only weapon that could defeat said monster. it wasn’t a holy torch or a beautiful legacy—it was the baton in a desperate relay race against a hungry wolf. toshinori yagi was the one who made it about saving and legacies, because he was mythologizing it to himself the same way he mythologized all might to the rest of the world as the symbol of peace. all might is a made up character to help the world feel safe, and one for all being a fated legacy is a made up story to make himself feel like he’s doing the right thing in making a martyrdom of his entire life.

okay so a couple days ago i read this post from delawaredetroit about how yagi is seeking closure from all for one, about "why he had to watch his mother figure die, flee his home country, and run himself ragged for 40 years," and it's really making me reconsider this idea of yagi mythologizing one for all, because right from the beginning all might clearly divides one for all into two parts: the public Symbol of Peace saving part, and the secret killing All for One part. And sometimes those two parts do intersect, but he's very conscious about keeping those parts as separate as possible. So in effect he's telling a story--a very real story, with very real societal impact, i'm not trying to downplay here--with the part of his life that he lives as the Symbol of Peace, and then he's doing the dirty work that's been passed down to him with the other part. and then he kills all for one and suddenly one half of the 'purpose' of his quirk is done, and he's left only with the other half--the Symbol of Peace.

So in the wake of all this, i think constructing a new story, a legendary unstained myth about the quirk he's carried for 40 years, is his way of finding closure for that half of his mission. And then, he passes the quirk and the myth and the new purpose he's created on to izuku, and it's clean! he's passing the half of the quirk, and the half of his life, that survived, on to his successor.

but the irony is that, for all the death and blood and awfulness of the other half of One for All, that part of his quirk--that part of his life--is also where the love lives. that's where nana lived and died. that's how the people who love him know him. and it's so telling that Yagi cuts out almost all of the people who truly know him and love him directly in the wake of killing all for one and completing the purpose of one part of the quirk.

but just like all might, though he has two visages, is just one guy, this quirk, cut into two purposes, is still one quirk. and it isn't until yagi starts to reconcile the two parts of himself and of his quirk--it isn't until he's able to open up to izuku, really, and tell him about the other half of the quirk that he's given him--that he's able to truly start to process the life that he was forced to live and the life he chose to live.

it would be. Soooo easy. To make bnha into Wicked for Boys. in fact now that im thinking about it I think many villain izuku fics are in fact Wicked for Boys.

by for boys I don’t really mean that it’s only for boys—I’m just thinking specifically about Galinda and bakugou, and the social niches they occupy as paragons of their own gender’s ultimate expression. Like, Katsuki is the Ideal Boy the same way Galinda is the Ideal Girl, and they are lauded by their peers at the beginning of the story and given great social power because of that. Like. Look at Galinda’s pitch perfect pink popular bubbly sweetness and that special Voice she puts on when she’s performing femininity, and then, look at Katsuki’s obsession with victory and toughness and strength and tell me they’re not doing a very similar Thing and being rewarded for it very similarly by their peers.

There’s the obvious parallels of izuku and Elphaba, green children shunned by the world for a perceived birth defect, who look up to the smiling guardians of their world with a kind of childlike naïveté and hope that maybe one day their hero would look at them and find them worthy.

But then there’s also katsuki and Galinda, told from birth the world is theirs, ambitious and self-centered and embracing everything that’s vapid about heroism or sorcery. And then the irony of izuku and elphaba embodying that key something that katsuki and Galinda lack to achieve their ambitions. And the montage of helping their green friend become strong or popular or whatever. And the. The further irony of like, finally getting what they wanted, whether it’s victory or adoration, and it’s just unsatisfying because of extenuating circumstances.

I think Galinda and katsuki’s stories are pretty different in the end because these stories are very different stories, and all might isnt evil, and katsuki experiences social consequences in a way Galinda doesn’t and galinda comes around much more quickly to elphaba. But if bnha was a slightly different story? Hmmmmm!!!

In retrospect, this dialogue from ReDestro's employee is irritating because the manga tells the reader how to feel about Destro without showing anything about him. Everyone in the latter half of Act Two was talking about this guy, but we know nothing about him as a person and only pieces of his ideology completely divorced from their original societal context.

Why was Destro a criminal compared to say Kudou and Bruce? They were all acting without permission of the government and were acting to destroy a status quo. Both Destro and Kudou had the zealotry to pursue their ideals until it destroyed them and their organizations. All three certainly killed people and planned sabotage in the pursuit of their goals.

There might still be reasons to view Kudou and Bruce more charitably than Destro, (i.e. maybe Destro being a quirk supremacist wanting to oppress the quirkless or being more brutal in his methods), but that would have required more backstory on Destro or Kudou and Bruce.

This dialogue is clearly the manga making a moral judgment that those who get other people involved in anti government acts are villainous, but this is an internal contradiction with its heroically portrayed Dawn of Quirks characters.

This is the difference between ReDestro and any of the previous BNHA antagonists other than maybe Stain: ReDestro is charismatic to an average person living in a relatively peaceful society.

Shigaraki's initial charisma stat was so low he could barely keep any allies. Overhaul could establish cult-like loyalty in his followers, but his reach was limited to people at the fringes of society and he was disliked by much of his own organization. All for One was charismatic for a society in collapse like the Dawn of Quirks, but his appeal was more underground as hero society developed. By All Might's prime, his reach was mostly based in the cracks of hero society.

ReDestro, like Stain, had an ideological core that ordinary people could at least understand. Stain focused on purging the corruption in hero society. Clearly some portions of society other than villains were aware of the corruption of hero society based on how they received Stain. But there were limits to Stain's acceptability because he approached an understandable systemic problem by turning himself into a zealot mass murderer. ReDestro had some reasonable critiques about how their society isn't as forward-thinking as they portray themselves on acceptance of different quirks and the bodily autonomy issues of forbidding quirk use outside of one profession. And he could do all that while looking like a respectable salaryman.
