Heavensward, but actually French, but stripped of historical accuracy in favor of vibes: Part 2
Based Ysayle off of several Charlotte Corday paintings, but without the bonnet

http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=13330 (main post) I highly recommend looking at the #5 post by Sounsyy!
(Also a thank you to Cam'nahl for finding this post for me <33)
((Hope you don’t mind my adding to this))
The order of and the days of the week are:
Firesday –> Earthsday –> Watersday –> Windsday –> Iceday –> Lightningday –> Lightsday –> Darksday
They also refer to years as seasons. Yda said something along the lines of ‘When I was twelve summers old.’ or something.
all this, seriously helpful. <3 Thank you so much.
For those interested in sources for this lore:
So far as I can tell, the days of the week listed above (Firesday, Earthsday, etc) never actually appear in the game. (I can’t speak to bonus content like the short stories off the top of my head, but should I ever run across any examples, I’ll take note of it.) This seems to be entirely Word of God, specifically a 2014 interview with localization director Michael Christopher Koji Fox, who states that the days of the week are the same as in Final Fantasy XI. (Cited here on the archived roleplayers’ forum.)
Gamerescape also has this handy reference page on Eorzean time.
Multiple sources heavily cite The Five Ages - An Eorzean Chronology, which appeared in 1.0 by way of “Dusty Tomes” found in various guilds. These texts didn’t return in the remake (except, amusingly, as a housing item), so we’re reliant on the fandom’s archivists to preserve them. When you see someone refer to “Dusty Tomes,” as in the roleplayers’ forum posts linked above, that’s what they’re talking about.
As a side note: while the units of distance and weight measurement above fully replace our real-world units, that is not the case for the units of time. “Hour” and “bell” seemed to be used about equally in MSQ dialogue (thank you @eriyu once again for your service). Though “moon” is more common, “month” appears more than a few times. “Day” is more common than “sun.” “Sennight” is barely there (though it pops up a few more times in side content), and as it’s technically a misnomer that tends to needle a lot of detail-minded fans, I wouldn’t feel obligation to use it over “week,” which appears far more often in canon anyway. “Fortnight” is similarly a misnomer, but a bit more commonly used since there isn’t a alternative word for “two weeks.” There are no alternate words for minutes or seconds; they’re called the same as we do.
Merchant's Tale from FFXIV, Part 1
Credit where credit is due. FFXIV's latest Variant Dungeon, Merchant's Tale, came out this week in Patch 7.45. There's been a lot of well-deserved criticism levied towards it already, because some of the most prominently marketed aspects of this new release - the gear, some of the bosses, etc. -- have been Orientalist caricatures that are demeaning, racist, and frankly rather disappointing. It's obvious why this is (sex sells and Disney's Aladdin sells; hence the "exotic" belly dancer gear, the blue genie of the lamp, the flying carpets, etc.), and I won't rehash those points here because that isn't the focus of this post.
The point is this: there's been some actual research & work that's gone into Merchant's Tale, and those facets should be recognized and praised and discussed, even as we are justly and rightfully denouncing the aforementioned Orientalism. I'm an Iranian-American; I may not be the best person to speak on this on account of how I am diaspora, but my grasp of Farsi/Persian and my cultural upbringing gives me enough background to recognize the work that Creative Unit 3 did put into this latest release. It's my personal belief that we should be encouraging more and better representation, not less and worse, and until matters & industries & reach improve enough that we can enjoy homegrown representation developed in the countries best suited to represent themselves, we ought to give companies feedback to encourage them to do better (hire natives and first language speakers, do their research, understand what not to do, etc.) rather than to become entirely avoidant ("why bother with representing this culture when we'll only get slammed for it") or, worse, to start disregarding our feedback entirely in favor of what sells best. There's enough good representation in Merchant's Tale that it's worth not losing sight of it, and I'm going to be covering all of those things in this post.
Be warned: spoilers await you.
Finally, before we start: please pray for the people of Iran.

Commission for @theevanescentwhisper! She gave me some ideas to finally flesh out the poor Doppro, since squenix doesn't care :(
Her ideas about the Doppro culture and biology:
actually we should start headcanoning female characters as being terrible with children
stop mother-ifying fictional literally all female characters. that fictional woman would not know what the fuck to do with a child
I mean, FFXIV's Athena certainly had her own ideas of what to do with a child. The Problem (TM) there was what those ideas were. Aka: "That's free real estate."
Sad old man hours or, my brain went “haha what if the three ancient ding dongs were friends since childhood would that be fucked up or what”

sage advice from Urianger
My first thought after reading the third Tales Under the Golden Sun stories
The third set of Arcadion fights will be the greatest raid of all time if the first or second boss is someone who gets supplanted by Gilgamesh emerging from the rift to challenge us once again.
"But Erick he's tied to the Hildibrand chain and not everyone has" shhhhh it's Gilgamesh he doesn't have to make sense.
happy 7.3, enjoy the new mahjong voice lines
it will always be funny that final fantasy xiv had a villain who was a young beautiful man with an imperious demeanor. but unlike near every other final fantasy villain of this type, you're denied a moment where he really drops the facade and reveals his full moral ugliness as part of a full-on breakdown sequence.
like zenos definitely has a couple facade drop moments but they are 1) when he briefly is a little "HOO WOW THE IDEA OF BECOMING AN EIKON GETS MY FUCKIN ENGINE GOING MAN. DID YOU DO THIS? WAS THIS YOUR PLAN ALL ALONG? DID YO--i'm noticing this isn't landing with you. sorry. let me collect myself then take over this dragon primal and we can get this show on the road." and then you're busy fighting a dragon, and 2) right before he kills himself, which your allies explicitly feel is a denial of true justice as he will never fully answer for his crimes, so you never really get to fully enjoy a proper zenos meltdown.
then they finally do give you a proper kuja-type villain, the genetic miracle who heralds a new era, whose origin and purported destiny are a source of great psychic pain for him, who destroys his own father in a bid for power and authority only to realize how hollow his own victory is. and he has a full-on psychological breakdown of a boss battle where he's literally battling ghosts while also fighting you. it's just that instead of a beautiful anime bishonen, zoraal ja's an insanely jacked 7 foot tall lizard with a bodybuilder's physique and a snatched waist.
but ffxiv's actual "parental issues gave me a breakdown and made me a nihilist" villain being a hunky lizardman instead of a bishonen is not the funny part. the funny part is that he finally dethrones kuja as most scantily-clad male final fantasy antagonist
