Humans have some of the most extreme hair variation over their bodies in the animal kingdom, with hair on some parts of our body a few millimetres long and fine enough to be almost invisible, and hair in other parts a good metre long if not artificially trimmed. Part of the inside of our mouths are turned out to make our lips bright red, we have comically oversized breasts and lack penis bones to make erections more indicative of impressive circulation, and have some of the most complex behavioural adaptations to self-ornamentation for courtship seen in anything that doesn’t spend half its life collecting blue bottle caps. How much ornamentation do you want?

Castiel could recognize that face anywhere. The demon’s vessel wasn’t very impressive - while the poor girl’s bronze skin that was kept on clear display was quite appealing, she also seemed quite frail, especially when compared to the two of them - but he could easily see the grinning mouth and pearly eyes hiding behind the makeup-caked face.

The pearly eyes widened in recognition almost immediately.

“Castiel.” Belial turned to Bobby, cocking his chin. “And a human. You never cease to amaze.”

Bobby frowned, squinting through the dark as his eyes adjusted. “You two know each other? You keep a lot o’ secrets.” Then, feeling a little at a loss, he settled his shotgun more firmly and scowled. “Anyway, we ain’t here to talk about the weather, so… how about you fill us in on what the hell happened here recently?”

The angel shifted uncomfortably. “It’s not a secret. Belial had been kept as a prisoner in Heaven for the last century. Only recently, the prison was compromised, and...” He trailed off.

Belial smiled.

Castiel’s jaw tightened. “Answer him.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” the demon didn’t even try to lie convincingly. “I’ve never been here before.”

Castiel accepted them with a nod. “I suppose that is wise, given the nature of your profession.”

He was glad Bobby didn’t mention - or notice - the trouble he had just now; how much respect could an angel who can’t even light a fire expect from his comrades? Right now, he needed the hunter to trust him.

Dousing the splinter with gasoline, the angel fumbled with the matches a little before finally managing to light it, stepping back from the fire while he recited the incantation, making sure he wouldn’t finish it before stepping out of the binding circle.

As he finished, the flames lashed up high… and then immediately died out.

This wasn’t exactly a ritual Bobby recognised - the fire and sigils were reasonably familiar, but he didn’t understand either the sigils or a word of what Castiel was saying. All the more reason to learn Enochian as soon as he could, he decided.

The fire flared, and he readied his shotgun… and was immediately left blinking in the aftermath as the flames extinguished themselves. “Who’d we catch?” he said, not wanting to give away his spoiled night vision if something had been summoned.

Taking out his blade, he stepped to the side, using it to rip a blood-soaked splinter out of the floorboards. Setting it into the middle of the trap, he sliced his hand open to draw the necessary sigil around it. Then he paused with his hand over it, frowning.

His grace… wasn’t exactly cooperating.

He cleared his throat.

“I… haven’t brought any fire with me.” Because he thought it would be no problem to create it for an angel of his standing. “Do you have some sort of a tinderbox with you?”

Bobby just grunted at the instruction to leave. He wasn’t exactly the type to run away without a decent reason and leave an ally somewhere they weren’t at their best.

…Especially since it became clear even something relatively simple like making fire was dampened by the aftermath of what had happened here. It kind of made sense; fire, like salt, was sometimes used as a purifier of sorts.

“Sure. I got some matches an’ gasoline with me.” He rummaged in his bag for a moment until he’d produced the necessary items and handed them over. “Never go anywhere without ‘em, really. There ya go - light ‘em up.”

And if push comes to shove, being held between two angels while the third one is working on extracting information from you is just as effective as any trap.

“If the pentagram doesn’t work, I should be able to buy us enough time to get out safely.”

“If the pentagram don’t work,” Bobby replied, still concentrating on making sure the trap was absolutely unbroken, “it ain’t a demon, which means we got a hell of a lot more to worry about than gettin’ outta here safely, like figurin’ out what the hell we just summoned.”

Finally satisfied with his work, he stepped back and picked his shotgun up, taking a ready stance. “Guess this’s it. Go ahead an’ start whatever you’re plannin’.”

The thought that no one could be trusted - even his own family, his own men he watched train and fight and grow - made him quiet and thoughtful as they worked. The only ones left now were the humans - Bobby, maybe even the vessels in extension. And it would be so easy to blame the brothers for all of it - but Castiel understood that Heaven played its role in it, too. By staying quiet and isolated until the last moment.

He tilted his head in thought at Bobby’s question, even though the answer had been simple - the fewer risks they took, the greater chance they had at milking this opportunity for all it was worth.

“We should use the safest one we know - what do hunters use to bind the more powerful demons?”

“Don’t angels have anythin’ specific they use?” Bobby asked, genuinely curious. “I guess you generally don’t need to bother, but…” He shrugged. “The regular pentagram version’ll hold pretty much any demon I’ve come across so far, includin’ the nastiest.”

He shook the can he was holding again and began drawing the outer circle of the trap. “Just as well it’s a bit windy tonight, the paint’ll dry faster.”

8. Book recommendation: I’m gonna try and make this at least a bit interesting. Read Hamlet, kids. It’s actually super good. And read Allen Ginsberg’s poetry, he’s great at painting images. Read Gnomon, it started as a fanfic and it’s an amazingly fun read. 

9. Movie recommendation: Watch the Green Lantern movie ironically, it’s actually really enjoyable that way. Also watch Eragon and pretend it’s a parody for maximum funsies. The Godfather is not overrated. It’s exactly as good as they tell you. As is the Bourne Trilogy. And Mission Impossible. Also watch the Death Note movies, the Japanese ones. They’re great.

10. Anime recommendation: I have so many, jfc xD Yuusha. Maoyu no Maou Yuusha; NouCome, Code Geass for all the low fantasy mecha fighting and family drama needs you might have. it’s angsty as fuck and I love it. K and K - Return of Kings is fun, too.

11. Music recommendation: check out Teminite and Panda Eyes for some electronic music goodness.

12. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?: All three, although coffee is the one I drink mostly because I love the taste.

13. Cats or dogs?: eh. neither? both? I’m not an animal person.

Having just been upstairs, Bobby came back into the room to find the kitten now exploring the sofa. He stopped, quirked a smile and leaned against the doorframe, quite content to amuse himself for a moment by watching whatever the little creature was up to.

He heard and smelled him coming, so he was sitting with his face aimed at the door already, head tilted to the side.

Castiel meowed. Had the brothers talked to him already? Told him about the witch and the curse?
