i already disliked The Navigation of Feeling because it's a bad framework for the research i'm doing and I didn't need to read it as closely as I did but then encountering this while already frustrated (and from a late middle aged man writing in 2001 no less) was a really personal slap in the face. deadened affect my ass i'll show you affect william reddy

his reading of cvetkovich is bad also.... ann cvetkovich is fierce and what i've read of her chapter on butchfemme affect is good and definitely not a case for melting stone the way reddy reads it . it is perhaps circular (everything good for cvetkovich comes back to what is femme and this reading of butch/femme always tends back towards femmes as people who model affective openings for butches who have a "closed" emotional style. she does give the nuance at length that the butch emotional style is really "big feelings" being penned to the private sphere, or no-emotions as a coverup for many-emotions but literally every point about butches is resolved by cvetkovch giving femmes credit for their recuperative emotional style) lol

24 hours anniversary of a midforties jazz singer wearing a novelty goosebumps tee shirt trying to pick me up in the grimy outdoor seating area of a bar smack dab in the middle of a residential area in suburban new england, something she did by singing dinah washington into my reticent right ear and without leaving room for jesus between the two of us. immediately after two men from inside the bar who i was hoping to mostly avoid came outside, one regaled me with information about a portugese poet who published under over seventy five personae in his lifetime while the other, a mass spectrometer operator with a heavy accent, held forth on the merits of various local bookstores with the person who i came to the bar with, who i do not know, but in whose house i am staying; it took us three long inquisitions by midforties pinwheeling types before we could get a word out to each other in earnest
