•The Guitarist• We met early in our journey, in the depth of the breach. He wasn't like most others that hung around the macabre halls. Life through his eyes seemed more innocent and kind, with a hope almost all others had lost. Simply, we became friends. But such a place can start to break a soul. Soon the melodies he played disappeared, replaced by a quiet thoughtfulness. Heartbreak and pain left no cynicism but a stronger resolve, and so it's strange in contrast to the others here. •Ramblings I• Loneliness is strange, especially after what seems like a long time. Thoughts have gotten harder to push away and it feels like I get carried away. Wandering inside my daydreams, hiding from the world around me. Solace is found in passing moments, when time seems to stop for good. Even then, loneliness is still there, following as close as my shadow. It's different now, being alone. Nothing worries me, as fear has even faded. Hollow but not empty. Only hidden, locked away as the branches and vines grow. Day 30 There's nothing stopping this disease. In just a month entire countries gone, populations decimated, present now lost to history...if there even is a history after all this. Even now, having to watch everyone I love fade away. My beautiful wife, so full of life and hope, gone. Today, both my son and daughter. There's nothing to bury, just dust in the beds they had passed in. Day 199 Ran out of gas today. Was nice while it lasted though. Made it into the city for supplies and found a few places that look promising. Strange to have driven so long and not see a soul. Haven't seen a trader or scavenger in weeks now, let alone any settlements or small camps. I've been preparing for the storm coming, you can see it resting on the horizon. I've never seem anything like it, but maybe it's from everything having just stopped. Every so often I can hear the rattle of thunder from the distance, but now it doesn't bother me. Most of the emergency broadcasts have stopped now. Cities and towns are getting more and more desolate with each day. It's been 2 weeks since I lost everyone. Never had to bury anyone, no bodies left. Like there wasn't ever anything to begin with. Guess it doesn't really matter now. I've boarded up the house and have started to salvage whatever I can, soon I'm sure power will be an issue. Travellers, poets, story tellers, and many in between. You'll see them everywhere, but sometimes you can find them in one place. All writers go to hell, at least that's what I've seen. You'll see them hidden in corners or drinking alone. The bar a length of misery, regret, remembrance and solice. More social souls can be heard laughing and trading tales and a few might even be shooting a game of pool. Some conceal themselves behind clouds of smoke and haze, narrating softly as a shadow. For such a big place it's hard to imagine you'd find so many. All writers go to hell, but only a few make it back. Day 233 Rain continues to wash over eerie silence and flood vacant streets. The house I'm holed up in seems to have a few leaks, but I won't complain since it beats my alternative. Haven't seen or heard a human voice in over a hundred days. Starting to feel like the last, and holding out hope now feels foolish. At least the animals around offer some comfort, they seem to have been unaffected by the sickness. I'm thankful for at least not have to watch anyone else fade away to nothing. Day 103 Most cities are completely ghost towns now. Skyscrapers and buildings just loom on horizons like monoliths from an ancient time. Hard to believe in less than 100 days most of the population seems to have been effected. Last I heard on the CB there was still a small settlement in the mountains out West, but that was almost 20 days ago, and the CB seems to have quit on me. Managed to cross paths with a trade van of some kind, they may be the only people left besides myself. Going to keep heading for Toronto, see if there's anything left to scavenge. Day 379 Been just over a year since everything changed. Haven't been able to find many supplies lately, water especially. Came across a carton of untouched smokes, seemed to good to pass up but only took half for myself. Will need to keep a few packs just in case there's a trade van left somewhere or maybe even a few people. Fairly certain almost everyone is dead or gone, I think the last time was Day 241, can't be sure. Moving on once the sun starts to rise, but will have to do one last equipment check, still can't be sure if it all started in the air or by contact. There’s a castle I built, in the sands of time. Resting on the foundation of memory, it stands in my mind. With banks of wild roses along the river, leaving a mist that floats to the forest of my dreams. The meadows and valleys twist with emerald fury as I stand high above. Watching from the keep, I try to remember why I built this place. Searching through the past I find no reason, yet my fortress stands. Once there was nothing here but woods and water. Now, a stone stronghold looks across the land in my head. Watching for the growing dark, vigilant for heartbreak on the horizon. Never again, because I built a castle. Never thought I’d have my heart broken. Never thought I was the type. Figured I could brush it off, laugh it up and drink it away. That wasn’t the way it went. It was like a fire storm, just anguish and fury. Funny thing is, the only one I could blame was me. At least, that was how it was at first. Slowly I start to see back through the looking glass. Saw the truth for what it was…what it is. There was blame to go around for all parties. More than enough to share. It didn’t really matter though, not in the end.
