I want to go back to Leeds. It's BEAUTIFUL! This is the site of the original @marksandspencer - it set up shop as a penny bazaar in 1884 at Leeds Kirkgate Market, which is the largest covered market in Europe (so Wikipedia tells me). I need to visit with my DSLR as an architecture lover - the city mixes the very old with the very new incredibly well. I've been desperate to visit brutalism lovers' paradise Rowley Way on the Alexandra Road Estate for a few years now. @kimnicolephotography and I finally visited to get snap happy, and I was glad we won't the only people there with cameras. Designed by Neave Brown in 1968 and complete by '78, this Grade II listed council estate is a wonderful example of how to design high density housing that people actually want to live in. Every property has its own outdoor space, and the rear of the building acts as a sound barrier for the trains that run parallel to the flats. Last weekend I went to Rome with my parents and sister for my Mum's birthday - our first family holiday in 12 years! Talk about state the obvious, but I was completely overwhelmed by how grand, gigantic and ancient the city's buildings are. The Colosseum is quite clearly bloody old! But standing inside the amphitheatre whilst being told about its build between 72-80AD, I was completely blown away. Some of the brickwork, mainly on the highest parts of the outer wall, still looks new - and no they're not new bricks used for reconstruction purposes. They're genuinely early 2,000 years old. We did the City Wonders tour of the Colosseum and Forum, and our tour guide Jaber had been leading tours for 43 years.
