A silver strand stood tall against the cinnamon blonde.
“Fuck,” Dean mumbled before letting his head fall into his hands. “Fuck.” He reached up and ran the strand between his fingers. It needed to go. Castiel couldn’t see it—
“Don’t,” a gravelly voice commanded from right behind him. Dean spun on his heels.
“What?”
“Don’t pull it out. The gray hair.” Castiel smiled cautiously, sensing Dean’s internal torment. “Please.”
“Why not? It’s proof that I’m an old fart.” Dean sighed as he turned back to the mirror. “How could you stick around while I age like this? Doesn’t it bother you?” Castiel shook his head.
“Dean, we’ve talked about this. When you go to Heaven, I’ll be there—”
“I don’t mean watching me age. I mean watching me get old.” Castiel raised an eyebrow and tilted his head in confusion.
“I don’t follow, Dean. That sounds like the same thing.” Cas took a step closer and rested a soft hand on Dean’s lower back. Dean just sighed.
“I’m turning into an old man, Cas. I don’t look like the same man I used to be, not when we first met. How can you look at me the same way?” Dean lowered his head, but Cas reached out and caught his chin between his fingers. He lifted Dean’s gaze to his and held it for just a moment, before offering a loving smile.
“Dean, you’re human. I know you’re going to age. It’s all part of your design. It doesn’t make you undesirable and it doesn’t make you mean any less to me.” He leaned in a little closer, causing Dean’s breath to catch. “You’ll always be beautiful to me.”
Dean blushed at Cas’ words. He tried to turn back to the mirror, but Cas’ grasp held him in place, just inches from Cas. Their breaths mingled as the two of them slowly relaxed. Then, Cas leaned in and closed the gap between them.
Cas had kissed Dean millions of times. And, each one seemed special to Dean. But this one was different. The affirmation it stood for, the love that poured from the angel filled every inch of Dean’s soul. He knew that Castiel meant every word he said.
