In case anyone finds it helpful because mobility aids are horrifically expensive and inaccessibleā¦
And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damageā¦
Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.
He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.
It's incredibly sad people have to resort to this, but it's a damn good resource. Use it. Spread awareness. Maybe one day people with physical disabilities won't need DIYs like this. But until then, reblog and share.
This is Accessibility!
That's so amazing! It is unfortunate that so many people will need this, but very very cool that it exists
That other link seems to be broken.
Thank you so much for putting the working one!
I will add it to my original reblog as well.
[ID by user paniniwitharugula: a wooden wheelchair made primarily of two-by-fours with a low back, tall wheels, and black seat cushions. The front wheels are hardware caster wheels. end I.D.]
Today we remember the 49 lives lost and countless others forever changed on June 12, 2016, at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. What was meant to be a night of joy, music, and pride became one of unimaginable tragedy.
We honor the memory of those we lostāmost of them young, queer, and Latinxāand we stand with the survivors, the families, and the community still healing.
Let this day be a reminder: queer joy is powerful, queer spaces are sacred, and love must always outshine hate.
I just laughed for one year watching this. The casual walk-off is just deadly.
i just love him so much
happy fourth of july to the philippines ONLY

hi, filipino here. just want to say that our independence day is june 12, not july 4. july 4 is when the united states government decided that they would recognize our freedom, specifically because it is your independence day and they wanted to cement their cultural hegemony over our country. and because of their influence on our country this was recognized for a time as our independence day. we still commemorate it, but i hope you can understand why we donāt want our independence day to be associated so closely with our former colonizer. it wasnāt even a work holiday for us.
june 12 is the day that we filipinos declared our own independence for ourselves, and that is what we celebrate as independence day
happy june 12 to you

When I get blood samples at work sometimes theyāre still warm from being imminently inside the patientās veins and my hands are always cold because all the labs Ive work in are in the basement and they keep it kinda cold for whatever reason (and Iām also just a chilly kid).
And I clutch the little warm tubes of blood and feel this sick person warming my hands and I think about how kind you might be and how I wish I could hold your hand and how badly, how really really badly, I want you to get better and stay warm and hold someoneās hand again.
And anyway sometimes itās better to not think so vividly about the people Iām doing tests for. Iām a good little cog in a vast machine of people all trying to heal and cure, and my cog feels so fucking small sometimes. But I hope the blood I prepare for you helps you breathe better and laugh and wake up feeling well rested.
Weāve never met but you warmed my hands and I want you to know I love you and Iām rooting for you.
I have over 40k notes on this and itās the most wonderful thing I could have hoped would get tumblr-famous. I wish you all comfort and compassion every day
wanted to highlight an important figure in trans rights, not in america but in iran, actually! the case of the late maryam khatoon molkara, a trans woman who managed to convince an iranian cleric, and leader at the time, ayotollah khomeini to not only allow her to get gender reassignment surgery but also make it legal in iran. it's very, very easy for lgbtq+ folks and their rights to be looked over in muslim countries (or even, countries that are muslim majority), claiming we don't exist, but it is far from the truth. we always have and always will exist, do not let anyone convince you otherwise.
"Every night I prayed for a miracle," she said. "But in the morning I looked at my body and it hadn't happened."
miscalculated
Okay so it took way longer than intended due to both straining the tendon in my thumb and then amazing full-throttle vacation, but I have now completed series 2 of tangram cats!
