Byakuya registered Nelliel’s shrug from the corner of his eye, but didn’t take his eyes from the horizon as he frowned. He slowly shook his head.
“A shinigami does not gain rank if they cannot cope with the aspects of death that are inherent in accepting their position. A shinigami who cannot cope after a battle may hesitate when they next face an enemy, and such hesitation can mean the deaths of many more if that shinigami is a captain or lieutenant.”
Byakuya turned his head finally towards Nelliel and let one brow lift. “And if efficiency on the battlefield is somehow a measure of one’s ability to cope with death, then you could conjecture that Captain Zaraki is completely unable to cope, given his inability to finish off an enemy at the end of a battle. And I think we could both agree that Captain Zaraki has no problem with death.”
Getting insight to the ranking of the Shinigami was always welcomed to the Arrancar. She appreciated learning, even more so when it was something she was interested in. She lifted an eyebrow thinking about the growth of someone just learning to one at Byakuya’s level. She could see the correlation between being able to accept death as part of their job and their growth.
"True, but at the same time, your subordinates should be able to defend themselves long enough to allow you or others to subdue the target or targets you are currently pursuing.”
She truly had no room to talk, she achieved her power on the backs of others. She ate those weaker than her to foster the power she had. She had stopped once she reached this level and had had time to reflect on the horror of her kind. However, she hadn’t stopped it from happening with those who followed in her footsteps.
“Ah yes, him.” She paused thinking about the Captain who gave himself handicaps in order to bring a bit of fairness to the fights he participated in. “There is something to be said about leaving your enemy alive when you deem them unfit to pass on. It is cruel in its own way -- Most who fight with that level of passion long for that warriors death and being denied that is far worse than succumbing. But no, he seems to have no issue with it.”
