Demonology and Sigils in Wynonna Earp - Peacemaker, the Ghost River Triangle Barrier, and (possible) inspiration for Bobo Del Rey [Beware: Spoilers]

Before I begin let me just say ā Iām going to need to bathe in holy water and delete my user history after all of this. Seriously, if by the grace of god Iāve managed to get out of this without summoning a demon; its only because I have all the worldly possessions of two great aunts who were nuns chilling in their old harry potter-es trunks in my room. I figure theyāve got to be pretty damn holy - but thatās a story for another day.
When I started this search I was convinced the symbols on the inside of Peacemaker were inspired by Runes, probably Icelandic/Norse in nature. I started looking up Icelandic magic staves but they were all too circular, to complex, or lacked enough arrows. Some were very close, but none matched so I kept looking. As it turns out the symbols we see in the photo(s) above are actually what are known as Sigils which is just a fancy word for symbols but with a bit of a twist. Because she explains it better then I ever could, hereās a quote from Rosemary Guileyās The Encyclopedia of Demons and Demonology pg. 228.
āIn MAGIC, a symbol unique to a DEMON, ANGEL, or other Ā occult Ā force, Ā used Ā in Ā rituals Ā such Ā as Ā the Ā summon-ing of specific spirits. Seals are also called sigils, a term derived from the Latin word for seal, sigillum.ā
After DAYS of scouring the internet (no this is not an exaggeration, @drag-oon23 can vouch for me) as I didnāt know exactly what I was looking for I eliminated hieroglyphs of several varieties, alchemy, many different religious symbols ā before finally stumbling upon this article. The original source is a deactivated tumblr blog that I have yet to confirm the name of. Further research has revealed that these Sigils are mostly inaccurate or completely made-up, but there is no doubt in my mind they were the source material for the Wynonna Earp costume and design/script writing department.
And I could have left it at that, but I didnāt. Instead I continued my research and finally found the original original source, or the very first instance in recorded literature, (to my now extensive knowledge) of these demon names - and their Sigils.
Disclaimer: the Sigils 1, 2, 3, and 18 I was unable to make out/go off screen so I decided not to waste energy searching for them. Sigils 8, 10, 15, and 16 are fairly generic occult sigils and I have a lot of different things they MIGHT mean (some even conflicting) so as a result I am not going to presume anything at this time.
I will instead focus on Sigils 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 17 which I HAVE found an abundance of information on. 6 and 14 Iām not giving up on just yet - but so far no luck.
Ambriel is one of the only Angelic sigils Iāve found, and one of the few not mentioned by John Dee, a famous medieval occult researcher whom also is the originator of 90% of the sigils seen above ā but more on him later. Ambriel is a known christian angel of gemini, specifically for the month of May. Do I think this has any significance to the show? Probably not, but it is interesting all the same - and always something they might elect to use later.Ā Additionally, I have found that Ambriel is attributed to the Queen of Cups in Tarot - which is probably why she is known as the Chancer.
#5. Dagon: The Great Fish
Dagon is actually pretty interesting and I was easily able to find reliable information about him online. He is better known as Dagan. You can click the embedded link for more information but the long and the short of it is - he was East Semitic Mesopotamian fertility god slash demon fishā¦ slash warlike protector. It varies throughout history but this guy/demon goes back a LONG way. Heās also briefly mentioned in The Encyclopedia of Demons and Demonology (pg 152) as he was apparently summoned during the Louviers Ā Possessions of 1647 ā but Iāll let you all read up on that if you want to. It isnāt clear of John Dee was the one to create Dagonās sigil, but it is where I first saw it appear in any form of writing.
