AITA for panicking?

So I have a long standing crush on this absolutely perfect, divine, beautiful man that fate has cruelly been toying with for many years. He is everything to me and more, he is the reason why I am alive today and that is not an exaggeration.

I've recently reunited with him after a very long time and things have been going very well between us. We get along swimmingly, he seems just as drawn to me as I am to him - but something happened last night that I think set us back quite a lot and I don't know how to make up for it.

We were hanging out together, everything was going well as usual, we were sat in a beautiful carriage led by four skeletons - you know, the whole nine yards.

He looked gorgeous in the dim light and he was so close, all my feelings for him came crashing down on me, all the years of longing and devotion and love - and I just couldn't help asking, "Gege, will you marry me?"

I didn't realize I blurted that out! It was in my head and meant to stay there! Of course it was too early to ask that!! But it simply came out of me before I could stop it - and he looked shocked.

I figured he would have probably said no and refused to ever see me again (after all, what creep just asks that kind of thing out of nowhere?!) and I immediately followed up with a laugh and said it was just a joke.

He got kind of quiet and seemed off the rest of the night. I didn't know how to explain the truth to him and I felt horrible and ridiculous for even opening my mouth in the first place so I left it at that.

So AITA for panicking and telling the man I'm in love with that I was just joking when I proposed?
