DESTIEL DID WHAT NOW
I guess it’s just screaming into the void day for me, but one other thing I really wish people would get through their skulls is that critical thinking and literary criticism are not “critical” in the way that your mom is “critical” of your outfit. Critical analysis of media is a lot more involved than thinking up half-baked ideas for why said media is shit, actually.
Thinking critically about a text requires that long before you think in terms of good and bad, you consider intents and outcomes, you understand both the immediate and wider context of what you’re looking at, and you acknowledge that fiction is subjective. It’s about thoughtful examination of all aspects of the work.
What function does this element serve in the work? Why might the author have included it? How was it incorporated, and how does it interact with other elements? Setting aside possible intents, but looking closely at context and execution, what impact does this element have on the work as a whole? On different possible audiences? How does all of this play into or deviate from greater patterns across media?
And for the love of god please stop forgetting:
What lens or framework am I using to examine this text? What are the limitations or problems with that framework? What are my biases? (<-Americans do this challenge) If I choose to examine this through a different lens, how does that change what I see?
…That’s barely a start, but the point is, if your idea of “thinking critically about the media you consume” starts and ends with picking any number of random things you heard are bad and seeing if they show up or not in said media, you’ve done the critical thinking equivalent of tripping at the starting line and really have no place telling other people to follow your lead whilst you are, quite obviously, face-down in the dirt.
I swear I'm still on tumblr, I just have so much irl shit going on right now I don't even have time for shitposting. THIS IS HELL
Two seconds later:
whose dick do I have to suck for some uther/merlin fic out there on ao3 😩
hmmmm
Hi! (succession anon from before ☺️) I used to have a tumblr and always love your Reylo posts but I actually recently left Tumblr because the constant drama was too stressful. But I hope you don’t mind if I randomly pop in your inbox with my questions/thoughts about Succession! 😊 Speaking of Q’s, do you have any thoughts on why/or generally the significance of the emphasis of hands? It’s like watching a Jane Austen movie every time there’s a hand flex on a shoulder or tugging someone closer 😂
I'm staying on tumblr because it's still the best way to share and discuss meta and it's easier than twitter to avoid assholes on here BUT TBH.... GOOD CHOICE 💀
I'm always up to discuss The Succ 🥂
And THE HANDS..... THE HANDSSSSS. I have so many feelings about the hands and the focus on microexpressions and fleeting looks on Succession. It's not a show where feelings ever get discussed but emotions and feelings are also the main focus of the show and the contrast is DELICIOUS.
Succession is really just a period drama but instead of victorian repression of physical urges and of unvirtuous feelings you get corporate machismo and cynicism with the same result of needing microinteractions to express Unspeakable Things. They can't TALK about the feelings onscreen, they can't have dialogues that are openly about them. It's all about the subtextual flow of emotion just simmering beneath the surface at all times but never full on boiling, and you need unspoken signals to express unspoken needs that can't be said out loud. It's heartwrenching and excruciating and SO great to watch.
Sebastian Armesto as King Uther Pendragon in CURSED
Hi! I just wanted to tell you that I started watching Succession because of your posts about it and I LOVE it! I really love reading your posts about it, they help me understand and appreciate the nuanced characters even more. And thank you for inspiring me to get into a new series 😊
omg anon!!!
I'm so glad!! I never know if people know me from tumblr or twitter but in any case if you ever want to talk about Succession I'm always up for it!
thinking about a scene with Greg reverse-enacting the "would you kiss me? If I asked you to? If I told you to?" stunt on Tom but this time with genuine and kind of aching intention.
And Tom tries to laugh it off but Greg's expression is dead serious and kind of desperate so Tom panics and puts on this face here for two seconds before fleeing the scene without a word

Just get shit moving at Parks. Yeah, Tom? It’s stagnant, so shake that fucking tree, C3PO.
anyway I watched Cursed and the thing that is clear to me is that Uther has a big uncomfortable fucked up crush on Merlin and
I'm so into pathetic weak men - often burdened with debilitating and oversheltered upbringing - with unhealthy crushes on other much stronger and "admirable" men who look to them with pity and mild mockery and play on their insecurities. IT'S A DELICIOUS DYNAMIC 🥂
Thanks to @sky2fall for the dialogue.
