I love the Granada adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles (did I want to see David Burke give it a go? Yes. Do I adore Edward Hardwicke in his Country Watson fashion? Very much also yes) for one specific reason

You have Kristoffer Tabori as Sir Henry Baskerville, aged 36 (he was born in 1952 and Granada's Hound came out in 1988), and then Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke aged 54 and 56 respectively, already older than their characters ought to be with Hound taking place around 1888(?) and Holmes retiring at 50 in the early 1900s

And this age gap completely alters the dynamic of the three characters; there's still a level of camaraderie, and respect for Sir Henry’s station, but otherwise it shifts into a parental, almost fatherly level of protectiveness on Holmes and Watson's part

They are much older than Sir Henry, older than Dr Mortimer, older than the Stapletons (Beryl Stapleton's actress was only 22!), and they become the de facto guardians of every victim caught in this terrible mystery

We get some lovely examples near the end, when Sir Henry has just been attacked, and Holmes holds him, rocks him, and assures him that everything is alright

Holmes, who doesn't really embrace people other than those he's particularly close to (e.g. when he returns in The Empty House and Mrs Hudson hugs him and cries)

Then, when he and Watson find Beryl Stapleton and rescue her, he does the same - and, at this point, these two have never met before! But we know how Holmes has a tendency to adopt young women in peril

Watson’s description of Toby - “Toby proved to be an ugly, long-haired, lop-eared creature, half spaniel and half lurcher, brown-and-white in color, with a very clumsy waddling gait.“

Holmes’ description of Toby - “I would rather have Toby’s help than that of the whole detective force of London.“

IE:

Watson: “This is a weird dog.”

Holmes: “Let’s get one thing straight, my guy, this is the BEST dog!”

This is why I hate when people depict Toby as a bloodhound. Not that bloodhounds are terrible dogs, I love them and they do important work. But I think a lot of people don’t get how weird Toby was.

For instance, this is a spaniel:

Specifically, this is an English (Springer) spaniel. It’s typically bred as a game dog, to flush out birds or small animals from underbrush. They rely heavily on sight and sound, and are fast, energetic little boogers. Spaniels in general are squatty little dogs, built low to the ground. Given the brown and white color Watson describes, we can assume this particular breed is likely Toby’s spaniel side. Because a lurcher…..

Is a mutt. A specific kind of mutt, but it’s a mutt. It’s “the offspring of a sight hound mated with another breed, most commonly a pastoral breed or a terrier type of dog.” Sight hounds are dogs that are hunters by sight and speed, not scent. They include Greyhounds, Wolfhounds, Whippets, and Afghans. A pastoral breed is one that primarily works agriculturally. These are a HUGE group of dogs, including but not limited to: Sheepdogs, Collies, Cattle dogs, Shepherds (including German and Australian), and Corgis. Yeah, corgis are working dogs, or at least were bred to be. Again, these dogs rely on speed, agility, and sight, not scent. Terriers are much the same, but generally smaller. They are fast and driven by sight. They also have wiry, scruffy hair in general. So a Lurcher is a fast, sight-driven, scruffy little thing that looks really odd because the breeds its made from are widely different in size, body type, and structure.

Here’s a typical “lurcher” dog:

Look at that little goob! If the police rolled up with that thing strapped into a vest, would you trust them?

So yeah. Imagine that. Plus the above. You’ve got a freaking weird looking dog. Not only that, one that shouldn’t probably have a good sniffer, since it’s made from sight-based working dogs. A funny-looking, oddball, lanky mess that comes out of nowhere and does amazing, almost impossible detective work when people might not expect him on first glance to be worth anything.

And people wonder why Holmes liked Toby so much…

I just read 'The Secret of Sherlock Holmes'. It was FANTASTIC. So many great lines. It also made me very emotional at a variety of points. For instance:

scars!

how many scars does my muse have? where are they located on my muse’s body? how did they get them? what do they look like?  Far too many to count; the scars are primarily located along the forearms, palms, knees-- places where one would be attacked in self defense. Holmes has lost teeth, taken many a bruise to fist fights-- but when knives or firearms are involved, he tends to take a defensive role. It is not in his first instinct to fight with anything other than his own fists or feet; so when such weaponry comes about he often finds himself on the defending side.

The scars run the spectrum of healing-- some are new and pink, some are old and silvery white. They are all jagged, glancing scars, otherwise he'd be dead.

He’s well versed in the art of telegrams, letters, and verbal communication in the context of extracting information from a client. He’s also quite good at inferring what the speaker might mean vs what they actually said– but this doesn’t always go as well as he would like; so ‘skilled at communication’ is very much a variable thing.

Dr John Watson, without a doubt.

Snakes, bodies of water/drowning, making mistakes

Injustice

Heavy woolen morning coats, tailcoats, cloaks, and the like. The more shapeless he can be, the better. He is also very much fond of his large, billowing dressing gown that covers a more form fitting shirtsleeves and waistcoat.

He’s got to have the basics like cigarettes, matches, loose disguise items, foolscap paper, ink stained pages of notebooks, a small magnifying glass. But behind those loosely sorted items are things like opera tickets to a show Watson especially liked. A receipt from a restaurant where Holmes ate everything– must remember that one. A leaf from a trip out to the countryside; a rock from when they went out to the coast, a telegram from Mycroft.
