I’m at a conference this weekend where a huge chunk of the conversation has been about how much academics in red states are being constrained in what they teach by state legislators and college administrators who barely understand what they do in the first place. Texas, where I did my PhD, just passed a law banning teaching of gender, race, or sexuality — which not only makes a lot of what I teach impossible, but lol, two of these were also the subject of my dissertation.

All this is to say that these blatantly unconstitutional (what university professors teach and research is considered protected by the First Amendment) laws are being challenged but obviously the legal system takes time. The groups challenging these are largely professors’ unions and state chapters of the ACLU.

So if you’re looking for somewhere to donate this holiday season, a red state ACLU chapter would be a great choice. This early-career academic would really appreciate it :)

The Latino and Asian vote swung hard back toward Democrats, collapsing any theories of some long-term realignment. Multiple candidates who won, from Mamdani to Spanberger, have explicitly stood up for trans people while Republican campaigns that lost big went all-in on transphobic fearmongering. It's not just a loss for Trump or Republicans, but also all the worst advice coming from the past year from so-called Democrats who were so eager to sell marginalized people (from groups they don't belong to, anyway) down the river for a little temporary electoral gain. It's a great victory for everything that makes America great, and a resounding defeat of everyone who used last election to lean into ugliness and hate.
