Lughnasadh, also known as Lammas, is the midpoint between the Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox. It takes place from sundown on July 31st to sundown on August 1st, and is the first of three harvest festivals.
"Lughnasadh" refers to the youthful Celtic warrior god Lugh (father of Cú Chulainn) who created the festival (and funeral games) to honor the sacrifice his foster mother Tailtiu made in order to make Ireland fertile.
"Lammas" is the contraction of "Loaf-mass", the old name of the grain harvest.
Now is the time of the year for baking all sorts of breads, pastries, and pies, or start fermentating batches of beer, mead, or ale!

Dream from last night (June 5th 2020)
I was waiting for a bus on a regular sunny day. When it pulled up, the driver was wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, and all the passengers were wearing plain white masks. They were all watching me expectantly. I realized that the other people waiting at the bus stop with me were cardboard cutouts (one I remember had a weird, creepy pained smile on his face).
Soil: keeper of the dead, giver of wealth
“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.” -Wendell Berry
In rebuilding a relationship with the natural environment, I realized everything starts and ends with soil. And in my pantheon of natural forces, soil transcends, the archetype of a deity of the dead and the underworld
It’s not just dirt, Soil is a collective being. In just one gram of soil can live 10 million bacteria [x]. Soil is home to the unseen. In its dark depths lives all sorts of minerals, microbes, fungi, and creatures essential to our existence, but mostly out of view. These minions of the soil toil as the Great Decomposer. From fallen leaves, animal droppings, to the leftover kill of the coyote, in a great orchestration the collective soil transmutes dead matter into the nutrients for life. Working together the soil makes this life force available and assists in delivering it with the help of mycorrhizal relationships and others. Most all death (sans some humans) will meet soil in one sense or another and it is soil that is responsible for managing the dead, the transition to the afterlife, and offers possibly of resurrection.
My relationship with soil is quite intense and personal. I learned from a school of gardening that focuses on building and raising soil using no-till techniques to harbor a thriving soil community and thus a more productive garden. My wealth and wellbeing comes from the soil, in the form of food, in exchange it must be treated with respect. Much of my time is spent with the soil, working with compost, collecting mulch, cleaning animal manure, and gardening of course. This time is spent is offering dedicated to the soil which enables learning it's lessons
The soil also plays an honored role when it comes to burying the remains of our animals. We try to use every last gift they bless us with but there are always unusable parts that are offered to the soil and we let it work its magic. The soil takes the bones and remains and transfers them to new life.
Burial plays a crucial role in my path: a way to give offerings to the land and harnessed as a useful form of magic. A direct connection to the soil, the underworld, and unseen forces (land spirits and such). Along with bones, herbs, roots, charms, other gifts and ingredients (all safe for the earth) are buried and used to form bonds with these entities and execute spells and rituals.
There is no better time to honor this deity of the dead then during the Halloween season. As it is the end of harvest: decaying plant matter is given to the compost, blood to the earth, remains buried deep underground. The gardens are given compost, manure, and mulch to nurish and protect the soil. We are more in touch with the unseen and death is fresh on the mind. But soil is honored throughout the year. In midspring when planting begins, during summer when it is full of life meditating with its energy, or frozen solid in winter sleeping under the snow, there is always value in being connected to death.
As spring awakens in the Northeast Kindom, we are brought back to the Soil, recently released from the frozen grasps of winter. The snow melts off the hills giving its nurishing waters to the land. The suns warm rays return to the north, prompting life to resurge. Decay and decomposition resume and the soil begins to teremble.
During this time, as we prepare the ground for planting, we honor Soil in its aspect as the giver of wealth.
A principle that holds a lot of weight in agriculture, and also in my spirituality, is equivalent exchange. The garden only gives if effort is put in. We respect the old adage “Feed the soil, not the plants” and have learned from years past that without a strong foundation, a plant can not produce a bountiful crop. To fortify our soil we give it gifts: compost and manure, wood ash from the winter’s fires, organic matter collected from the forest floor that inoculates it with beneficial companions. We strive to build a thriving community, one that works together to transmute death into life and sustenance.
In veneration of the Soil during the beginning of the planting season, offerings are left for its spirit. Bread of land, made from local grown grain and wild yeast, is fed to the soil so in return it may feed us. A ritual held in its honor. After a winter under snow, it is good to reconnect with the soil. Fingers buried in the cooled earth, welcoming the soil’s presence and healing. [Read more:X X] If treated with respect the soil can offer long lasting wealth, but abused it will give nothing but a place to die. [X]

This post gave me goosebumps
More folk magic - if you give someone a knife as a gift, also give them a penny, which they should give back to you. This way they are paying for the knife and it won't cut your tie with them. Some knife makers actually include a single penny in the packaging for this reason.
Ooh yes I’ve heard this one a lot. Same with scissors, shears, or anything that severs.
Husband’s family is very adamant about keeping to this tradition. Blades are a common gift in their circle (lots of LARPers and reenactors), and a silver coin is always traded for the blade, even if it’s just a nickel. If there’s family involved, a certain amount of playful haggling may also take place.
I was brought into this when Ragnar gave me a ritual knife one year for my birthday while we were still dating. It’s a gorgeous piece that he assembled himself, with a malachite pommel and a matching green leather sheath. I had to go on a treasure hunt for it, and then traded him a quarter for it so the bond would remain intact. (Spoiler: It worked. We’ve been married nearly four years. I still have the knife. It lives on my altar bookcase.)
It’s worth noting that I’ve had friends to whom I’ve gifted blades and the ones who didn’t or wouldn’t trade me a coin for it have since fallen out of touch. At our wedding, the groomsmen were gifted cavalry sabers and asked for a dime in return. Only one of them refused. We haven’t seen much of him since.
Me (calmly): ... So in short I think I've been feeling this way because I didn't make good on the offering I promised and now the fae are upset with me and messing with me.
My bf: *stares*
Me: I knew you wouldn't believe me
My bf: it's not that, I just think you're freaking yourself out over nothing
Me: freaking out? I'm not freaking out. This is normal to me.
The Signs as Types of Fae
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Aries - Will O’Wisp, pretty tiny fairies that glow and fly above lakes and other bodies of water during the night. They look like little flickering candles and have been sighted globally. And they have a cute name... Will O’Wisp.
Taurus - Brownies, fae that stick together and raid homes for their supplies. If something goes missing, blame it on the brownies. If they like you they might clean your house while stealing your things.
Gemini - Changeling, an ugly fairy baby that replaces the stolen human baby. Although I read somewhere that changelings were just children with disabilities and honestly that’s kind of sad soo.... but we’ll include Changelings because I think the concept itself is freaky.
Cancer - Kelpies, kind of scary dark water horses that come from celtic mythology. Are said to haunt bodies of water and drag you into the waters depths. They can shapeshift as well and can take human form. They’re genuinely scary to me idk.
Leo - Salamanders, fire type fairies that are really important and powerful to the element of fire. They can be quite cheeky though, so be careful if you want to summon their help because they can be a little bit destructive sometimes. 👀
Virgo - Dryads, tree spirits from Greek Mythology. Basically pretty tree girls who do nothing but dwell by beautiful big trees naked. Oh how i wish that were me right now.
Libra - Sylphs, beautiful fairies of the air. You can barely see them because they’re so transparent and blend in with the sky. They’re hard to catch but a beautiful sight to see when you do get the chance. They go wherever the wind leads them, and sometimes you can hear them singing in the sky.
Scorpio - Banshee, from Irish and Scottish mythology. Banshees scream as a warning to families that someone dear to them may die soon. She’s like La Llorona... except no bc she doesn’t steal your kids, she just wails out a gut wrenching, frightening cry.
Sagittarius - Puca, shapeshifter fae in celtic mythology. A lot of the time they are said to have been seen in the form of a horse, but can also shapeshift into a human. They can be both good or bad.
Capricorn - Dwarves, little people that are said to be living in the mountains, hard workers (PERIODT) and highkey rich because think about all the gold and gems they find... 👀 Dwarves are from germanic mythology and are associated with mining, crafting and wisdom.
Aquarius - Elves, found in many places, I associate them with Aquarius because of the way they hold themselves. They’re elegant like and intelligent, they are good with art but they make it their own. They dance to their own beat and rebel when needed.
Pisces - Merfolk, as always they’re associated with Pisces because of their connection to water, dreams, creativity and emotions. Merfolk are half human and half fish, they live discreetly in the undiscovered areas of our oceans.

I just got the strongest whiff of anise or licorice, like someone shoved a handful of anise seed or licorice root under my nose and I could almost taste it but like... I don't keep anise anything in my house...?
Okay, so which deity wants a licorice offering???
Gonna go to sleep and see if my dreams will tell me who it is...
Update, so I went to sleep with strong intentions of receiving messages from whatever sent me that smell. I had a dream about a spirit or faerie that was showing me how he shape-shifted by literally moving his facial features around like modeling clay. And when I say faerie, I don't mean like a pixie. He was a stout man with skin the color of dirt and lots of creases and wrinkles in his face (but that might have been from the whole moving his face around thing)
So... Idk what that means??
