Comparison
We are in and of ourselves beautiful entities. We destroy and we put something new in its place. The rubble of what once was can become something amazing even if it isn’t anything at all. Remnants. Remnants of a past. We leave something behind wherever we go. To think that what we leave behind is something amazing and unreplicable whether it is for better or for worse. We create in our own image and the things we create are extensions of ourselves. We are manipulators, not only of the image we create for ourselves, but in what light we see others. I like to think of humans as a centipede like creature. hundreds of arms reaching out in different directions pushing us in one direction or another all functioning in unison. not forgetting the bug like quality that we all possess being one in over seven billion and always growing in population exponentially. Needless to say, we were spawned into this world in a different time. and to think that someone 20 years old today saw the birth of the modern world as a result of the extension of hundreds of thousands of arms moving us forward. the goal? to surpass ourselves. to examine ourselves and to exceed the image we have created. One day we will replace the standard of which we hold ourselves to. my concern is not with that inevitability. My concern lies in how we view ourselves. The staple of our generation is that we have everything. We pride ourselves on having the fastest internet and the latest gadgets to occupy our time with. It seems like we often forget that there is more out there. that there is more that we can do to surpass ourselves. It seems as though having everything makes us less in tune with what else there is for us to do. Anything possible is a google search away, so instead of what we can do to make something better, we focus on what there already is. if we wait long enough, someone else will have done it for us. Not because its too hard or out of our reach, but because we never challenged ourselves to pick up the weight of the world and move it forward. The constructs of the society we are all a part of are malleable. It all just comes down to how much time you wish to put forth in order to make the change. How much time do you really have in a day? After you’ve checked your Facebook 5-50 times a day, after you’ve scanned Instagram to see what other people are doing, after you’ve browsed twitter because you were bored and retweeted a few relevant things to the image you are curating. how much time is there? How much more would you have without the technology that was meant to bring us together? In the process of bringing ourselves together by means of technology, we have created a society where interaction is mundane at the cost of accessibility. If everything is accessible nothing is worth reaching out to. I have sympathy for the centipede because those hundred legs are working together in a common goal. I just wish I could say the same about the people in this world, myself included.
If I could love anyone the way he loves me, the only sadness in the world would be being apart from one another.
Earth Day series. People need one day a year to care about the earth so they can forget about it for the other 364 days.
Happy Earth Day!
