Seeing the Twins

MK shifted nervously from foot to foot. He had to knock. He knew he had to knock. He was going to knock. It wasn’t so bad; they weren’t as bad as Jimmy, certainly. He just - interacting with people other than Mummy made him so nervous. He was always worried that he was going to do something wrong. But no, they were due to have their measurements taken again, and it was his job. MK was good at his job, he knew he was. That was something he could cling to. He swallowed, stood up straighter and knocked firmly on the door.

"Stop squirming for God's sake!" Lock hissed, trying to get Sherly to stay still, fixing the shirt he was wearing. "He's only coming to take our measurements and then he'll be gone again."

Sherly pouted and huffed in annoyance. "Is he at least bringing Susan?"

"No, he's not bringing that insufferable woman with him, I can assure you of that."

"I don't know why you don't like her; she's perfectly nice!"

"That's exactly why I don't like her." Lock kissed the corner of Sherly's mouth before fixing his hair once more. "Now do try to behave. We don't want him reporting anything negative back to Susan, or she'll tell the Colonel."

Sherly nodded immediately, having no desire to anger Daddy. "Of course."

Once he was certain Sherly was settled, Lock made his way to the door to open it for the tailor. "Come in."

Brother Dearest || Twins x2 AU || moriartysboys

How did we get here? This was the question Sherlock asked himself every morning he woke up, every time he looked in the mirror. He tried not to look in mirrors. As vain as he was, they reminded him of what he'd never have. 

Sherly was happy. Lock knew he was, and that was how things had to stay. For the sake of their jobs, and for the sake of their lives. It was convenient to Jim to have a set of each of his best men, and even more convenient for them to be together. 

Lock had resisted, had taken no interest in either of the Moran twins, but Sherly had attached to Severin quickly. Lock had tried to stop him, had tried to explain that he couldn't do that, but Sherly had never been the best at listening. The day he went to bed with Severin was the day he condemned Lock to this existence of simultaneous loneliness and suffocating company.

Lock did not love Sebastian, but he played the part well. He kissed him when he was expected to, felt lust when the other touched him, and shared his bed. Even as a child he had shared a bed with Sherly, and it felt so very wrong to have another in his place.

But the way Sebastian's arms locked around his waist, the way he held him fiercely spoke of a possessiveness that easier to indulge. Sebastian was selfish enough to want to keep him, so Lock was complacent enough to let him have him. Lock lived for Sherly's happiness, and if pretending to love Sebastian would guarantee that, Lock would be the best damn actor the world had ever seen. He did not live for himself, but rather for his brother.

As the morning light fell across his form, Lock began to wake up. Sleepy eyes opened to see the same face that Sherly saw every morning, the Moran brother that he had been tied to. Closing his eyes again, Lock curled closer to the warmth of the other man, sighing as he relaxed in the arms that held him.

Vetis remembered the destruction of his kingdom. He remembered it every time he shut his eyes and was forced to see the horror day after day, second after second. How was he supposed to forget the way his people were slaughtered, the way his twin sister was stolen away from him and killed right in front of him. How was he supposed to dispel the feeling of like he didn’t deserve to be alive, the last prince, the fallen prince of his people, the octo-mer-people. Why him? Why was he spared if only to be left to make a mockery of? Who was he without his people, without his twin? Lost. Every second he felt lost, trapped in the dungeons of the mer kingdom palace where he was forced to grow up alone.

It was a miracle Vetis lasted as long as he had. Although he grew up in captivity, to make a mockery of him, he was still raised as a prince to a people that didn’t exist anymore. And yet he had everything he could ask for; all were remnants from his destroyed kingdom. And every day he lived wishing there was something he could do to escape, to enact revenge on his people, to save himself, to bring his sister back. There was nothing he could do. He didn’t know enough magic, didn’t have the resources, a cauldron, ingredients, to even attempt something that would save him. He lived with knowing every day the mer people might kill him, and yet he selfishly hoped he’d have one more day all on his own, one day more to try and escape this monotonous fate and redeem his people.

But the question remained; how?

Vetis sat in his cell as he often did, looking over the one book of spells that belonged to his sister. She was to be the sorceress, not him. And yet here he was, reading her books, wearing her jewelry, wearing her crown, in an effort to remember her and never forget. A bangle encrusted with pink stones adorned each teal tentacle about half way up. A beaded skirt made entirely out of loops of beads was on his waist and a matching choker was on his neck. As for his piercings, a beaded dangle with a pink stone were on his ears, nipple, and a stud on his tongue as well as a few more decorative pieces on his ears. On his head was his sister’s crown, delicate and beautiful. But despite all this, Vetis felt like an imposter, a sham to his sister’s memory and how was he supposed to make up for the lack of his better half? Vetis closed his eyes and the book as he sensed someone approaching his cell. “Have you come to release me?” Vetis called before be even saw who it was who had arrived to visit him.

Sherly wasn't meant to be in the dungeons, he knew better. He had been warned from a very young age to never venture down. He was too fragile, they said. He was the one meant to rule in subservience while Lock took control and oversaw the real workings of the kingdom. Lock would be the one to find  mate and  produce the next set of heirs. Sherly was just there to be supportive and help when he could. He loved his brother, and his brother loved him. They were affectionate and lovely, and he was always so happy with Lock. 

But Sherly was curious, and he couldn't stop himself. He went to the surface one day, just wanted to see what it was like on land. Humans were dangerous, he knew that, but they were fascinating in a way too. It was this fascination that kept him coming back, especially when he saw him.

Sherly had no idea what his name was, but he was beautiful and perfect. He made Sherly's heart ache, and he wanted to know him. But he didn't dare mention it to Lock; he didn't like it when Sherly did things he wasn't supposed to, and going to the surface was definitely not supposed to be done. 

Then he heard once, about a prisoner kept in their dungeons. This prisoner was from the long gone kingdom of the octo-mer-people, the race that had mastered magic. Maybe this prisoner could help! Maybe he could give Sherly legs so he could explore the land and meet his beautiful stranger! He didn't want to stay human, no no! He was needed in the kingdom. But maybe just a few hours, or the ability to change at will! How grand that would be! He could never give up his beautiful tail forever, and he could never live somewhere else. He just wanted to meet the man he had found so lovely. Maybe he would even come back to the sea with him! The possibilities were endless, and so with confidence, he descended to the prisons beneath the brilliant castle that he shared with his brother.

"No, I am not, though I do need your help," Sherly responded, swimming up and gripping the bars as he looked in at the magnificent creature.

Yet another meeting. Olly was starting to resent being passed from person to person like a puppy at a primary school. Apparently this Sherlock was the one she’d be helping out most. That was how The Colonel had put it. The car pulled up and she was left at the door. So she knocked. She realised her hand was shaking and clenched her fist. Pushing all emotion away. She wasnt going to be introduced to yet another person looking terrified, however she felt. She concentrated on keeping her face straight.

Sherly paced back and forth across the flat, eager and interested to meet this new recruit. After all, Daddy must have seen something special in her. Especially if he was sending her right here to them! Oh, this would be exciting!

"Would you sit still for five minutes?" Lock asked in exasperation, looking over his slightly neurotic brother.

Sherly rushed over to his brother, placing his hands on the arms of the chair and leaning close. "How am I meant to stay still? Daddy's sending us a new one Lock! He's trusting us to train her!" A grin broke out over his face.

Lock sighed, reaching up to cup one of Sherly's cheeks. "Sherly, I know you're excited, but if we want to do a good job for Daddy, you're going to have to calm down." He pressed a careful kiss to his other cheek. "Do you think you can focus for me?"

Sherly hummed at the kiss, smiling a little more calmly now. Lock loved him, and he only wanted what was best for him, of course. Lock always wanted what was best for him. "Of course, Lock. I'll try my best." He kissed his brother's cheek back, relaxing at the careful affection.

When Sherly backed up, Lock stood and straightened his own suit before reaching to fix Sherly's. "I know you don't like the tie, but it really does look lovely on you," Lock noted with a slight smirk. Of course it looked lovely; they looked the same. Slender hands moved to straighten the tie in question, giving an appreciative glance to his brother.

"I always like it when we dress to match, so I don't mind it this time," Sherly assured him. Mirror images in truth today. All the better to confuse the girl.

Lock's head turned when he heard a knock on the door, but he remained close to his brother. "Come in," he called.

Lock rolled his eyes the pretense of amusement gone. “You know I don’t call him that. I find it positively ridiculous, and he should be addressed with a proper title of respect. And while I’m not usually the one in the studio, I do enjoy this work; it’s just more suited to my brother most of the time.”

Sherlock turned back to the mirror and fixed his hair a bit, deciding whether to wait or just do his own makeup. “Speaking of which, he’s not here because he’s out gathering information for your darling brother. Some foreign business person is in town and the Colonel wanted to know a few things about his work.”

Susan pouted at him, a bit upset that he made no attempt to even conceal his annoyance.  “I don’t understand why you think it’s so disrespectful.  The others call him that and I think it fits.  Just because you want to be a party pooper and sit in the toy box having no fun doesn’t mean you get to drag the others back in with you.”

Her annoyance quickly turned into a grin, popping her head above his shoulder in the mirror and sticking her tongue out.  “Yes, yes.  Mr. Rosado.  He’s the one with the cabbage baby.”  Her eyes lit up suddenly.  “You should let me do your makeup.  I practice all the time.”

With a pointed look at Susan's face in the mirror, Lock replied, "I'm perfectly capable of doing my own makeup. If your current appearance is anything to go by, I think I'd be better off that way." A smirk crossed his face as he reached first for the light powder used to help accentuate his cheekbones. Sherly was much more skilled at makeup, but he was fairly decent at it. Susan appeared to have skill with her own, but he couldn't resist the urge for a playful insult.

Noon and four? That's easy. I was at a photo shoot for the upcoming edition of one of the magazines I have a contract with.
