“....This is way worse, don’t worry.”
As Aine toyed with the curtains of the open window, she stared out across the vast land and lake. Her eyes glanced down once before back at the setting. “You don’t think someone would die if they fell from here, do you think? Not that long a fall.” She said carelessly and conversationally in passing to whomever had been nearby her. Aine hadn’t bothered to look at them. “Beautiful day out.” She said of the grey overcast.
“Really, the worse I’d say would be a concussion and a lot of broken bones. Could resemble a Quidditch injury too, if you want ta stage it like one.” Peeking out the window himself, Stevie nodded. “It’s a good time to not go out and get soaked, if that’s what you mean.”
“Given that it is right here, why don’t you use it to your advantage, my friend?”
“I would, but you’re closer to it. Pass it already, red.”
Moonlit Whispers
Evie & Stevie
Evie really loved prefect duties. She did…except when they were with stupid people who just wanted to chat with their friends all night. An older Slytherin and Ravenclaw were chatting away while “patrolling” the grounds and main floor, while her fellow fifth year Ravenclaw prefect was tackling the classroom corridors and dungeons solo. This left Evie to man the dormitories on her own, which was fine if she didn’t have so many negative things to think about.
She tried to distract her thoughts by focusing on the paintings to see if any portraits wanted to chat, but alas they were all fast asleep or out for the night. Sam clouded her thoughts; Mum clouded her thoughts; for some reason Fletcher popped into her brain, which was a nice break from the drama, but then the stepmonster bashed into her brain. The prefect almost forgot she was on duty, that is, until she ran straight into a peer.
“Oi, watch it Waite. You know what they say about three times right?” Stevie was on patrol, like the rest of the prefects. But in a bid to avoid Calla tonight, he took a completely different route without Hadley. And then he bumped in Evie.
Looking around, the only witnesses were sleeping paintings and the night sky, and he was going to take his chances here with Evie instead. “Looks like it’s you and me tonight. Two’s always a safer number, you’ve got the other’s back, you see.”
Zoe ignored the comment about her roots. The wand had been her dad’s insistence, not her own. As far as she was concerned she had no mother. A mother wouldn’t abandon her daughter to a lifetime of harassment and disquiet, of feeling like she was a predator with a lure she had no idea how to control, of not being able to look in a mirror because whenever she did she couldn’t stop. “I’m not sure.” She said in a forcibly light tone, studying her wand rather than look at Stevie. “That would be interesting, to see if Veela hair wands work the same for pureblood humans as mine does for me.”
She frowned at his offer, shaking her head. “No thank you. I don’t accept offers of anything from people. Especially not when they’re all-” she made a vague hand gesture encompassing the smile on his face and the slightly dazed look. “-that. It’s not really fair to you, you know? Same as being drunk, kinda. I appreciate the offer, though.”
Stevie chuckled; highly uncharacteristic of him to do so in this situation. But he chuckled, for a full long minute before answering again. This wasn’t normal, but the Raven wasn’t really feeling normal in the standard sense. “Oh, don’t worry about this. I’m always like this. Like, seriously, I’m not a freaking helper, but I sure am ready to help you.” His eyes were slightly dazed over, and he was probably not going to make any sense now.
I couldn’t resist! This is a very lovely song and I needed a partner. Couldn’t dance on my own, could I?
“I shouldn’t even be here, but a waltz wouldn’t hurt.”
Teach me how to slow dance on our kitchen floor at 2 am and after we can sit on the counter and eat cookie dough and fall a little more in love.
Name’s Grant. Or grantgust. Happy to be here. It’s cool.
Zoe would have smiled, but she didn’t want to make his current situation any worse. She was always wary of smiling or laughing, as it tended to make the pheromone issue worse than usual. Instead she offered a slight upward twitch of her lips, letting it fall back immediately into neutrality. “As winning as that endorsement was, I think I’ll go ahead and do it myself. I appreciate the gesture. As for Defense, it’s not bad, only my wand-” She made a face and lifted it to examine. “My dad thought it would be a good idea to use one of my mother’s hairs in it, so he had the wand maker blend it with components of a wand I’d had good results with. It added a bit of an extra ‘oomph’ to my magic, but sometimes it’s a touch unpredictable. Doesn’t exactly make me feel comfortable practicing potentially dangerous charms and hexes with my classmates.”
Stevie wasn’t actually swooning, was he? God, he really needed to get himself into shape. Nodding, he smiled ruefully. “At least it was heartfelt gesture to reconnect you to whatever roots you had going on there. It’s not too bad though, is it? I suppose there are other people with Veela wands in the castle. But then again, what’s a wand without a connection? Just a piece of wood with some magic in itself.” Tilting his head to the side, his smile was genuine this time. “But if you need a dueling partner...I could volunteer.”
“I ‘aven’t the soggiest what your methods o’ payment may include, but I’m sure I wouldn’t like ‘em either way, Hopper. S’aren’t trade secrets o’ any kind, maybe I just want m’ way with the both o’ them–got a problem with that, mate?”
“What you need with them is none of my business anymore, actually. I haven’t seen Ashton in a while around here, and Cap’n Mo must be out somewhere doing something great in the castle. Also, I accept cold hard cash, but I’m flexible. Candy also works as payment sometimes.”
“Knowing Goode and Witherspoon, a little sweet talking is all it will talk for the little gremlins to get out of whatever punishment they’re threatened with. I’m still unsure of how those two managed the Head Boy and Head Girl gigs. They’re too…malleable. Too nice. No backbone.”
“Witherspoon yeah, Goode...not so much. She’s flexible within boundaries, I think.” Stevie shrugged; he didn’t have to stand up for Calla, but it was a habit ingrained in him anyway. “I suppose the Headmistress we needed some friendly faces telling us not to break rules. I dunno, Whelon probably has a scheme up her sleeve or something.”
Whoops
“Alright, chief. So sorry for trying to maintain my own personal safety, but I’ll keep your advice in mind next time I’m fleeing twelve-year olds. Oh, pauvre bébé. How will you ever survive without your fix?”
“Good. Last thing we could need is falling children down staircases. I really don’t understand the need for revolving ones, especially when it’s rush hour in the halls. And as my fix, I’ll manage just fine without your attention, Waite.”
Whoops
“Sorry, Hooper, I was avoiding some third years in a hurry. Someone’s grumpy today. What, did you run out of hair product this morning?”
“There’s a reason they say it’s unsafe to run around in the hallways. You could have easily knocked someone over. Also, the amount of product in my hair had nothing to do with my lack of morning coffee.”

“You think? I found it here and decided to give it a spin. You’d think I’d still remember how to play it but it’s just…” Shreya sighed, looking down at the instrument on her lap. There was nothing more disappointing than losing a connection with something that was supposed to be the closest to you.
She looked up to him, raising her eyebrows in question. If he thought she was still mad about the Quidditch game, Shreya had long forgotten what she was even angry about. “Stevie…just get your arse in here and close the door, won’t ya? We’ve got some music to make and I don’t have the room all day. Even though I almost live in here, it’s besides the point.”
Stevie kicked the door close on his way in, smiling as he joined on her floor. There was some kind of decorative throw on the stone, which he decided not to question as he sat down. “...just that you lost touch with the feel of plucking strings for in favour of things that make more noise on impact?” He added, shrugging and smirking.
“You know, how about you grab something else and I’ll take the guitar? Let’s see what we can do with two instruments and a free mind.” If anything, neither of them were lyrical geniuses; Stevie had a good voice and Shreya had good hands. But creativity was something to be explored, so be it. They would explore. “How’s the drum kit skill coming along?”
Zoe sighed, putting her chin in her hands as she returned her attention to the planner she’d been studying. She had thought that for once Hopper was actually going to have a conversation, and not get all- dopey. “I was saying I needed to service my broomstick before Quidditch practice. It’s veering to the right a bit, and that I need to find someone to help me study some of the spells we’ve been studying in D.A.D.A.” It was talking to herself again, more than anything. She didn’t like to acknowledge people when they got this way around her, though certainly Stevie was better than some.
“I’m not saying I can get it right, but if it’s not too bad then I could probably fix it. Scout’s honour, no sabotage.” Stevie raised his right hand to indicate so, trying his hardest to not get lost in conversation again. It was like his brain was scrambled, and it didn’t usually happen to him that often. “D.A.D.A...Good luck with that, I guess. I hear that class had a lot of ‘boom’ in it.”
“Have ya seen Tanner runnin’ ‘round?” She asked casually, then moving on to her second item of business. “Or Mo? I’ve got some butterin’ up to do with the both o’ ‘em.”
“Haven’t ya heard, Rosenburg? I’m keeping them in my secret lair, all tied up and released with ransom. Pay up and I can spit one at a time. Also, you shouldn’t be discussing trade secrets with me. I play for the team too.” Stevie shrugged, looking straight at Loren.
Hadley nodded. She felt this was the way the majority of their patrols went. Deducting points was always satisfying, but she couldn’t bring herself to discipline her peers if it wasn’t going to be easy. It wasn’t that she was lazy, she just couldn’t care enough for it to matter. “Garcia’s running around somewhere, I’m sure. He can scare the life out of them. Someone else will get them.”
“What are the odds they run into Goode and Witherspoon, though?” Stevie smirked, looking at them. Nodding to her opinion, he sat down again and looked left and right. “I bet they’re gonna try smooth talking around them.”
