Installation of final paintings

My idea of reduced painting is a combination of installation and painting itself. I installed it as a cylinder as I thought it reduced the size of the painting. The installation makes the element seems like it is longer. I wanted to hang it on a wall however it could lead to rip the paper. Here, I used a pringles like snack box to wrap the painting and display it on a small table.

Installation of final paintings

The first three images are for expansive painting. I named it “sad and melt” as I feel the sadness when I look at it. The painting was displayed on the wall with a frame which is more like an additional object made for installation. I stick it at the corner of the bathroom because the little corner has a perfect lighting and the lamp is interesting to put together with the painting as well. First, I tried to place it closely but it was better on the other wall. I used a thick cardboard to stick on the painting. As I wanted to make the painting and frame related as one, I drew the leaves. The relationship of three objects to me is that they offer a warm vibe.

Final reductive painting

First image is a documentation of idea exoloration for reductive painting. The final idea was taken from the artist Agnes Martin. What I love about the artist’s work is the color palette. I like the style of using the same color but pale and dark as we can see in second image. It is interesting that the lines are not hard and solidly defined and the background is not flat but as a whole it is reduced.

The last image is my final reductive painting which i painted on paper with water colour. I went for the color blue. Here in the image, it is seen that the background is colourful. It could be because of the lighting resolution on laptop. It is blue in reality. I took only part of the assemblage which is triangle. I did not look for hard and clean for reductive painting. My intention was the color and installation.

Final expansive painting

Final expansive painting was led by the previous process of deforming shapes. It is decided to be painted with no control but based on the elements of the assemblage. Inspired by the artist Nicole Eisenman’s work from the exhibition of Faces; Painted Reliefs, I wanted to create a person alike or a face alike painting. 

Water colour and highlighter were used on paper. The choices of colours were considered from the assemblage which was bright, and distinct. What I love about this painting is the texture which I tried out with different painting styles.

Expansive Painting

Working on expansive painting is a challenge for me. I aimed for abstraction of my assemblage. My initial step was to start with neat shapes. Here, I disformed it with the idea of grotesque. I had a little control in this painting which I should be more free. I love the colors combination here.

Reductive Painting

This is another practice of my idea of reductive painting. I chose the specific area that I want to focus on. From the last practice, I saw triangles, rectangles and circles. Here, I saw the ovals inside. I took the form and proposition which I found it interesting. I made it simple, cleaner look this time.

Reductive painting 

One of my ideas is patterns which is inspired from the installation of the artist Laura Owens. To create it, I used a thread roll moving across the paper. By looking at the result, I wanted to create reductive painting using the minimal effort, less materials, and smaller size of paper. 

I dabbed the water color paint on paper with paper. The process was fun and interesting. From the  second image, I could also see my fingerprints. I changed the background to black next time as I wanted to reduce the bright colors that I am using. However, the black brings out the colors more and clean. I love the incomplete filling of colors which still gives the sense of the shapes.

Keeping idea of my assemblage, I tried to develop it further by reforming the shapes to clean look. In this process, I found it hard to paint straight lines. I consider this as an initial step of idea exploration and practice.

Assemblage- I collected a few objects considering about colors and I played in geometric shapes. 

Collage- Again, I placed the cards in geometric shapes. I made a triangle, a pile of rectanges, and circles.

Painting- I wanted to try the assemblage in abstract version. However, the process leads me to add more and less to the painting. I used oil paint for the first time and it was hard to paint with. So, I also applied with my fingers.

By looking at this painting by Laura Owens, I love the colour combination. In my opinion, cool tones overwhelm the painting harmoniously. The red color of fruit like apple and the leaf get attention of the whole painting. Yellowy, green, different shades of blue, purple, and red are seen as objects in my eyes while the rest seem abstract. I can see various brush marks, and marks and they look very interesting.

Subtraction of color

First image shows two different colors that I used for small rectangles in center. One is creamy and one is grey.

From second image, I used color cards to achieve the colors look alike. The light creamy color with brown background and the grey with yellowy card. The result is that two colors look very similar interacted with their backgrounds. Another reason could be the lighting of the yellow card when it is taken with phone camera.

From third image, I used oil paint to recreate the colors. In this process, color mixing was hard to achieve the same as the cards. The result is not very satisfactory as cards.

A color has many faces - the relativity of color

From first image, I tried out using color cards. I inserted two colors in between the same light blue. We can see that blue on white and blue on deep blue display the bezold effect. They seem like two different blues.

From second image, I used oil paint creating the similar colors. This shows the bezold effect as well as I applied the same blue in small rectangles.
