Elemental Hair: Pink

Chibiusa’s rosy locks represent much about the girl herself, from her powers to her identity. Even her hairstyle has a story; Naoko Takeuchi originally tried to make Usagi look like a rabbit (evidenced in her hairstyle) as a reference to an Eastern folklore figure, the rabbit on the moon. However, Naoko expressed disappointment that she was not able to properly convey this. Eager to try again, she transferred the design over to Usagi’s daughter, Chibiusa. Chibiusa’s odango (hair buns) give the impression of rabbit ears. This, coupled with her red eyes, makes her resemble a pink rabbit.

The color pink itself is also bursting with symbolism. Pink represents love, hope, compassion, femininity, and innocence, among other things. As the combination of white and red, pink shares the attributes of these very different colors. It contains the passion and energy of red, softened by the purity and completeness of white.  Pink is feminine, romantic, affectionate, intimate, thoughtful, caring, tender, kind, and sensitive.

Pink is also the color of hope. It is a positive color that inspires a sense of wellbeing, a sense that everything will be okay. Finally, pink is the color of uncomplicated emotions, inexperience, and naiveté.

It’s clear that pink is the perfect match for Chibiusa, a child who gives others so much hope and inspiration. It’s also fitting how pink is often associated with naiveté and inexperience, as Chibiusa is constantly being faced with new experiences and is still learning how to become a lady. Speaking of which, pink is the color most strongly associated with femininity, and Chibiusa’s biggest dream is to become a lovely, graceful lady. Finally, as stated above, pink is the color that represents love the best. Like her mother, Chibiusa’s powers are primarily centered around love, and she fights for love and justice. 

On another note, Chibiusa’s bangs are exactly like her mother, Usagi’s; also like Usagi, her hair is wavy when let down.

Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto (Black)

Black. The color of mystery, of the unknown. As the Senshi (and guardian) of time, Pluto’s theme color of black adds to the air of mystery that surrounds her. Black represents power, sophistication, mystery, sensuality, elegance, and stoicism. It is also associated with grief, death, stability, formality, strength, authority, wealth, anonymity, and fear of the unknown. Black is also known as a timeless and classic color.

Setsuna is an enigma, and black suits her very well for it. She is also very elegant and sophisticated, as well as being stoic and unattached most of the time. It’s no wonder that black, the most mature and misunderstood of all colors, was chosen for most inscrutable Senshi.

Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus (Navy)

Haruka’s color, navy (dark blue) is different than Ami’s, which is light blue/blue. However, navy has its own set of attributes. Dark blue represents intuition, depth, seriousness, contemplation, knowledge, authority, responsibility, conservatism, and compassion, but having a hard time showing its feelings. It also is commonly seen as a masculine color, especially in contrast to some other colors (Pink, purple, etc).

I think this is a color that clearly suits Haruka. Not only does it tie into Haruka’s inability to be true to her own emotions, it also highlights her masculine traits. 

Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune (Aquamarine)

Aquamarine, as its name implies, has a heavy connection to the sea. Like the sea, whose colors are always changing, Michiru’s aura can be seen as anything from aquamarine to teal to turquoise. Aquamarine is a very sophisticated and refreshing color. The combination between blue and green, it retains the same calming effect of both colors. Aquamarine also represents femininity, water, emotional healing, calmness, soothingness, and protection. In addition, aquamarine is said to open the lines of communication between the heart and the spoken word, allowing one to express themselves clearly.

Michiru’s color not only highlights her connection to the sea, it helps contrast her with Haruka. She is the feminine color to Haruka’s masculine and, in addition, their differing colors draw attention to their methods of communication. While Haruka has a hard time expressing and being honest to herself, Michiru has no such problems.

Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn (Purple)

Purple is a significant color that has had strong symbolism for centuries. It is the symbol of royalty and nobility as well as spirituality. The polar opposites red (hot) and blue (cool) combine to create this intriguing color and, as a result, purple shares attributes with both of them. In addition, purple is associated with dignity, independence, mystery, enlightenment, creativity, magic, ambition, and power. It is also sometimes considered an artificial color because it isn’t often seen in nature.

I believe that Naoko was saving this unique color for Saturn, the last of the Senshi. Saturn is special, not only because she is the Forbidden Soldier, but also because she seems to serve two courts at different times (Usagi/Serenity in the present and Chibiusa/Small Lady in the future). Also, it’s noted that purple is oftentimes seen as an artificial color; in the manga, Hotaru has been made into a cyborg. In other words, she is an artificial human. Finally, purple is the color of spirituality, and Hotaru is shown to be very in-touch with the otherworldly and non-physical.

Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury (Blue)

Ami’s aura color has ranged anywhere from blue to light blue. Above all, blue is a color that represents calmness and coolness. Blue is said to have a soothing effect on people; blue is the color associated with water, which explains why so many people find it relaxing. In addition, blue is associated with depth and perception, wisdom, intelligence, peace, trust, truth, loyalty, order, and stability.

It’s clear why Naoko Takeuchi chose this color for Ami. Not only does it represent her element of water, it encompasses many, if not all, of Ami’s traits.

Rei Hino/Sailor Mars (Red)

Red is, without question, the color of Mars. Red is seen as one of the most, if not the most, vibrant and energetic colors. It’s a very strong color that can represent anything from love and passion to violence and war. Red has a very energizing effect on many people. Perhaps the reason why Red is associated so heavily with burning passion is because it’s the color of fire, the most unpredictable and dynamic element. In addition, red is associated with excitement, energy, desire, power, strength, heat, confidence, vitality, action, courage, and all things intense and passionate. Also, in many Asian cultures, red is the color of prosperity and good luck.

Once again, Naoko chose a color that not only represents the element but the girl herself. Everything Rei does she does with burning passion and confidence.

Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter (Green)

Although Sailor Jupiter primarily controls lightning, her main control is over nature, which oftentimes includes plants. The color of nature is, undoubtedly, green. Green represents growth, abundance, and vitality. Green is a color that is associated with natural life. It represents renewal, growth, health, spring, generosity, fertility, and vigor. It also has connotations with balance, endurance, hope, stability, and safety.

Although the connection isn’t quite as obvious as it is with Ami and Rei, I still feel green is the color that perfectly suits Mako. In many ways, her awakening as a Senshi was the start of a new life for her, one filled with abundant joy. She also gains the stability and balance she never had before.

Minako Aino/Sailor Venus (Orange)

(Minako’s aura is a bit difficult, considering her color can range anywhere from gold to orange. I decided to just stick with orange because it seems to be her most prevalent color.)

Orange is a color that is heavily associated with energy and enthusiasm. The result of the combination between red and yellow, orange shares common attributes with both colors but is more subdued; it is less aggressive than red and calmer than yellow. Orange represents enthusiasm, warmth, vibrancy, flamboyance, happiness, encouragement, determination and, in some cases, a call for attention.

Even though, as stated before, Minako has a whole range of colors that are associated with her, I believe orange suits her the best! It captures all of her enthusiasm and vibrancy without making it as passionate as red or as stimulating as yellow.

Zexal month day 13: Yuma day

Something I’ve been dying to do for a long time, gender-bent Yuma!

In this universe, Yuma is the only person whose gender has changed. She’s a spitfire little tomboy who idolized her father and wanted to be just like him when she grew up. Kattobingu and the golden key still mean the world to her, but in this universe, Yuma had a negative reaction to her mom and dad disappearing. Rather than immediately latching on to the key and making ‘kattobingu’ her motto, she was angry and felt betrayed. She rebelled for a while, and became kind of like how Shark was at the beginning of the series—even joining a dueling gang, and maybe she and Shark had a bit of rivalry on the streets. It’s even more poetic because she and Shark know each other, in this universe she knew Rio and went to school with her. I don’t actually know when Kazuma and Mirai disappeared in canon, (something like 5 years prior to the series start?) but in this universe it happened two years prior to the series start and right around the time of Rio’s accident, so it was a triple blow to Yuma.

Akari and Haru tried to get Yuma back on the right track; they talked to her, grounded her, tried to get her into therapy, but they were dealing with their own grief and it was hard on all of them. After a while, Haru realized that Yuma needed to find her own way back, and Akari agreed. Yuma spent somewhere between 6-9 months being a delinquent before she snapped out of her funk and realized that this wasn’t what her parents would want for her. How did she snap out of that funk? She was in her attic and she happened to open a box and find the golden key, along with her dad’s adventure journal. She cried all night reading the journal, and in the morning she put on her uniform and went to school, key around her neck.

Unpopular Opinion? IDK

So, I came to really appreciate enjoy Black and White in Pokemon Adventures…

BUT.

I truly don’t think they’re the ideal characterizations for the B/W protagonist characters.

Kusaka made Black the stereotypical hot-blooded idiot hero who has a dream that he’s determined to achieve and has a strong sense of justice that you find in many shonen works, and White the stereotypical level-headed Neutral Female who may be strong in spirit but is embarrassingly useless in combat and actually contributing anything worthwhile that you also find in many shonen works. Their character development then becomes to break out of these molds and become more real, well-rounded people. Black learns to be more level-headed when he needs to be (without needing a Pokemon to eat his dreams) and stops being so single-minded about his dream and black and white (ha!) about his moral views. White learns to be more hot-blooded when she needs to be, becomes a highly skilled fighter who leads the charge in the final battle, and broadens the scope of what the Pokemon working under her should be able to do. This is very interesting and enjoyable to see, but there’s one problem:

^ LOOK at these two! Between them, which one looks like the level-headed one and which one looks like the hot-blooded one to you? Exactly: the male character (Hilbert / Black) looks level-headed with his soft smile and tipping of his hat, while the female character (Hilda / White) looks hot-blooded with her energetic grin and hands on her hips. And yet Kusaka totally flips that around just to subvert expectations and make his deconstruction of shonen character roles work. I think he got things ass-backwards, because look at these characters:

Wouldn’t it have made far more sense to do such a thing with them, given that the male (Brendan / Ruby) look likely to be a typical shonen hero and the female (May / Sapphire) a typical shonen heroine? But instead, Kusaka did the subverting expectations thing with them too by making Ruby a sensitive femme-type boy and Sapphire a rough-and-tumble tomboy!

So yeah, as much as I like Black and White, I’ll never be totally on board with this choice. 

Thankfully, we now have versions of the characters that get it right:

The Pokemon Masters versions!

Strongly competitive but with a kind, calm demeanor is exactly the image projected by Hilbert’s design, while hot-blooded, high-spirited and good-humored is exactly the image projected by Hilda’s design. Pokemon Masters NAILS it with these characterizations.

For that matter, it’s nailed Brendan as well (still no May yet):

“His goal is to be like his dad” could not be further from Ruby in Pokemon Adventures, but it is what’s suggested by the character’s design and I’m really glad Masters is going with it.

So that’s my two cents on the subject.

Tbh, Whi-Two/Whitley is the only Unova protagonist in Adventures who perfectly fits with her game counterpart’s personality, but at least Lack-Two/Blake is a very unique and well written character in his own right (and he knows how to fake being Nate-esque fairly well, too). Black and White were always the highest degree of “passable” to me character-wise. Like I appreciate their character development, but at the same time don’t feel like it’s the development that ought to have been designated to characters such as Hilbert and Hilda.

This was pretty fun to make! I wasn't sure if I should give Lisa Lisa divination stuff like Joseph but being a support type didn't really suit her tbh. So I think it's a bit more like hierophant green even tho I didn't specify much :)

Erina's stand isn't really punchy like traditional stands but I think It would still do alright in stand battles and I think it suits her .
