You shuffle into Ilikay’s room, the one place on this station where you two can talk safely. She follows you with her gaze, waiting patiently for an answer you don’t give until you’re laying down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling.
“Good? I think?” (Sink.) You frown uncertainly at nothing. Your fin has another slice in it, and honestly you’ve gained more little scratches and scars during your stay here than you ever did in training. The injuries you get aren’t ever life threatening, there’s just… more of them.
You feel Ilikay come to sit down next to you, lean over you. Her face is tired, and clouded with concern. Neither of you have good experiences with the authorities here.
It’s a long one, but for the one or two of you who might have been wondering where I went...stuff has not been too wonderful here.
To start with the simple stuff, I haven’t had the chance to draw much. My tablet has this thing where it’s display now is completely tinted this horribly bright shade of red that I can’t look at for too long without getting a headache and that obviously makes working on digital art pretty difficult. The brand I have isn’t hugely popular so I have yet to find any solution to the problem, but if any of you might know, I would be happy to listen to your advice.
It was fine one day and the next, candy apple red for everything. Coloring is impossible since every color aside from black is red on the monitor. I have scribbled a bit in sketchbooks, but I haven’t felt much like drawing.
The store has been doing pretty well. Summer tends to be slower, but weddings and funerals have kept me in business. No major craziness to report there aside from griping about it being impossible to hire anyone in this town....unless you want a felon or a 14 year old who can’t drive.
And then there’s the life stuff.
My brother is in the process of moving back in with me and my parents as his divorce did not leave him in a good spot. As a result, we had to make room for him (currently trying to make the basement a small apartment) and that meant a lot of sacrifices for us. I’ve had to sell and get rid of a lot of things that I cared about in order to help pay for the move and to make sure we weren’t surrounded by boxes for years to come.
My brother’s divorce has also meant a lot of family tension. He borrows a lot of money from me and my mother and we’re not so sure it’s going where we think. We’re pretty sure he’s still paying for things for his ex who still has him in a strangle hold....needless to say my 100 dollars a week should have done more than it seemed to...
So not only have I given him most of the money meant for myself rather than the business, but I have also gotten rid of a lot of my life and now live in the room I had when I was 10. Very little space and little privacy does not make for good conditions when you were used to a spacious safe place in your own home.
And then there was the kicker this week. We lost a very important court case we put against someone who did some...not so wonderful things to me when I was a teenager. We’ve been fighting to win this case for 7 years now and knowing that we lost because I didn’t have more money was very painful and upsetting. Watching him get to walk out of that court room without so much as a slap on the hand has messed me up just as much as what he did to me....
That case cost $40,000 just to get to the courtroom and they wanted at least $20,000 more so we could “afford” the proper witnesses.The fact that you need to pay more just to have someone come up and tell the truth....is very unsettling.
And I’ve pretty well been dealing with it on my own...It’s made me pretty reluctant to talk to people because I don’t want these problems to effect them. Seeing as most of my friends are in their own turmoil right now, it just seemed the right thing to stay quiet and not risk making someone’s day worse.
The only reason I’m writing this is so everyone doesn’t think I’m dead.
I want to get back to drawing, chatting, and rping...but there’s a big barrier in my life.All of this has not been good for my anxiety and sending happy cat pictures to people hasn’t helped me convince myself that things are okay like they used to.
It’s a pretty big mess...
But that’s it in a nutshell.Anyone looking to talk to me, I leave my laptop with discord and skype open all day at the shop. My phone is always on. Send me a cute cat picture and it’ll be like a secret code.
