The Reichenbach Fall Theory (Part 3)
This is the Game Changer, this is the Peak, this is the MOST INTENSE PART. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
He knew, Moriarty knew all along..
Part 1 : https://chickencatsandwine.tumblr.com/post/169189350374/the-reichenbach-fall-discoveryupdated
Part 2 : https://chickencatsandwine.tumblr.com/post/169233655754/the-reichenbach-falls-theory-part-2
This will be focusing on the BIBLICAL Terminology of “LAZARUS”
We all know that Lazarus, in the Biblical Terminology from the Bible, means “Raised from the Dead.” But lets dig deeper into this rabbit hole.
There are 2 Lazarus, from the Bible. One is Lazarus of Bethany, who was raised from the dead. He was the one I correlate to with the theory of Sherlock coming back to life, but then I noticed that there is another Lazarus, another person. How did I notice this? Well.. GET READY TO SHIT YOURSELF.
In my theory (Part 1), concluded already that there was a “coincidental” match of the name RICHARD LAZARUS, because it seems to combine RICHARD Brooke and LAZARUS. In recap, there is a psychology theory of emotions called the Lazarus Theory, created by Dr. Richard Lazarus, who died FALLING in 2002. COINCIDENTALY, Gatiss played a Character named Richard Lazarus in Doctor Who, who seeks for immortality, and died FALLING. Check out the Part 1 post if you need deeper briefing.
This is where it gets mind-blowing..
We all know that Reichenbach was derived from Richard Brook. Logically, Richard is Reichen. Reich is an old germanic root syllable, which means Rich/Powerful. Richard however, can be styled into Reichardt, Reichert, Reich(en) with the additional en/t often being added into names for style. Throughout the globe, countries with Germanic roots tend to have these name too, only slightly different. Like Reichert, as Reicher. I mentioned this for a reason.
Let’s take Richard Lazarus, our findings from Part 1, and convert it to German. Reichen Lazarus. Surprise! There’s a story about “Reicher Mann und amer Lazarus”. Convert it back to English, it translates to “The Rich Man and Lazarus”. (Reicher is used for the Title of the story, however the description uses Reichen). This story tells vivid accounts of the Afterlife.
The next explanations include bible verses, that seem very fitting..
The story the Rich Man and Lazarus came from the Gospel of Luke.
Take a look at 19 till 22. It is translatable as the Rich Man (Moriarty) and Lazarus(Sherlock). Why? Lazarus longs to ‘eat’ what fell from the rich man’s table. Sherlock CRAVES and wants to solve what Moriarty is feeding him. Cases. Until one day, just like Lazarus, he died because of it. NOW PAY ATTENTION.
“22. The angels carried him to Abraham’s side.” Sounds Familiar? Remember what Sherlock said in the Reichenbach Fall?
“I may be on the side of the angels but don’t think for one second that I am one of them.” – Sherlock Holmes
THIS gives a huge reference regarding the what is mentioned about Lazarus in the Gospel of Luke. But that’s not just it…you see..
Moriarty is a mastermind in implementing manipulation. Moriarty knew it all along. Let me show you why.
Here are the exchange of dialogues between Sherlock and Moriarty, on the rooftop at the Reichenbach Fall. (In order, selected). Pay attention to the bolded words.
“All my life I’ve been searching for distractions. You were the best distraction and now I don’t even have you. Because I’ve beaten you.” - Moriarty
“Rich Brook in German is Reichen Bach, the case that made my name.“ -Sherlock
“I knew you’d fall for it. That’s your weakness, you always want everything to be clever. Now, shall we finish the game? One final act. Glad you chose a tall building, nice way to do it.” - Moriarty
“Genius detective proved to be a fraud. I read it in the paper, so it must be true. I love newspapers. Fairytales.” - Moriarty
“Your friends will die if you don’t.” - Moriarty
“John.” - Sherlock
“Yes, but I’m not my brother, remember? I am you – prepared to do anything; prepared to burn; prepared to do what ordinary people won’t do. You want me to shake hands with you in hell? I shall not disappoint you.” - Sherlock
“Naah. You talk big. Naah. You’re ordinary. You’re ordinary – you’re on the side of the angels.” - Moriarty
And that’s when Sherlock mentioned about his well known quote… of being by the side of the angels. Just like what the Rich Man and Lazarus’s story was written.
Watch as Moriarty specifically say “the side of the angels”. While he could’ve just mentioned “You’re one of the good guys.”
Moriarty is capable of convincing Sherlock that he was Gay at first. Moriarty had it all..planned. ALL PLANNED. As mentioned, Moriarty loves FAIRYTALES, Pretty Grimms. This was all his plan. He decided to bring a fairytale back to life. This wasn’t about the Reichenbach Fall. This was ALL about LAZARUS. Based on the exchange of their dialogues, Moriarty has been searching for “distractions” all his life. Of course, when he saw Sherlock, he will latch on to him. Since the beginning, it was planned.
Moriarty brought a fairytale back to life. A story back to life. The story of Lazarus.
We mentioned already that there are 2 Lazarus Character in the Bible. Lazarus from the Gospel of Luke, and Lazarus of Bethany. Oh dear, such a brilliant mind. Do you want to know where the story of Lazarus of Bethany was written in the Bible?
Gospel of JOHN
Yes darling, you’ve read that right. This sly-smirking bastard had planned everything, and by everything. I meant EVERYTHING. Down to combining both of the Lazarus.
HE IS THE NAPOLEON OF CRIME.
IOU. I owe you. Why an apple was carved with IOU the first time Moriarty started the Game?
The Apple, in Biblical symbolism is a fruit that symbolizes Knowledge, Immortality, Temptation, Sin….and one more thing.
The Fall of Man.
This is where it gets interesting. In the Old Testament, the apple was significant of the fall of man; in the New Testament, it is an emblem of the redemption from that fall. Both Gospel of Luke and John are located in the New Testament. This could mean that by Moriarty giving the Apple to Sherlock, it refers to the symbolism of the Old Testament, that he was going to fall. After the fall, the symbolism changed to the New Testament. Which means the redemption of that fall. Redemption translatable to “Reclaiming” or “Gaining possession” of what he once had. His Life. Back to Lazarus again.
Now, who gave the Apple in the Bible? The Serpent. Which is often mention at the New Testament. Serpents, can be associated to Fortune-Telling. The Serpent is a cunning creature, deceptive, a trickster. Fortune - Telling? So like Moriarty predicting Sherlock’s Demise? Hmm…
Now Keep in mind. The Serpent. Moriarty’s amazing planning. Gospel of John. Lazarus.
In the dialogue above, Moriarty mentioned that he read Sherlock’s death in the paper. IT MUST BE TRUE. He LOVES Newspapers. Oh how he did loves newspapers. He even left clues behind. On the Reichenbach Fall, several Newspapers with dates are shown…. I had a hunch, and what I found was simply, well, insane.
Newspaper shows 10 . 5 . 11 is when Sherlock testifies against Moriarty. 10 May
20 . 9 . 11 is when Moriarty visited Bakerstreet, 20 September
5 . 10 . 11 , Which we can assume is 5 October. This when Sherlock is determined as an Expert Witness for the Trial.
11 . 10 . 11 is when Moriarty “Vanished” 11 October
19 . 11 . 11 is when John and Sherlock were on the Run after the ambassador case 19 November.
20 . 11 . 11 is when Sherlock commited “Suicide”
However.. in John Watson’s blog, its doesn’t match up. In the blog, sherlock’s death date was 16th of June (16 . 6 . 11). Perhaps the Sherlock crew and Moftiss made a mistake. Or did they…..?
They all fit in the biblical Chapters and Verses of the GOSPEL OF JOHN. jaaaaawwwwwn
In this picture, I showed you how I find out which number is for the Chapters and which for the verse. Sorry for sheeeettii (ha get it? sheet?) brightness.
BUT BASICALLY. The Chapter and Verse is determined like this.
JOHN DD : MM-YY (Day, Month, Year)
1. 10-5-11 : John 10 : 5 - 11 , Sherlock testifies against Moriarty. Title of the Chapter is THE GOOD SHEPHERD AND HIS SHEEP. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. In this Chapter Jesus is basically telling people that people who enters the sheep pen by climbing the gate will be a thief. Now, Imagine Sherlock is Jesus in this Chapter. Pharisees were the people in court/trial. The Sheep is the Truth. Thieves/Robbers is Moriarty/villains. THOSE WHO TRY TO BYPASS SHERLOCK ARE EVIL, BECAUSE SHERLOCK IS PROTECTING THE SHEEP, THE TURTH.
2. 20-9-11 : John 20 : 9 - 11, Moriarty visits Bakerstreet after the verdict walking freely. Chapter is THE EMPTY TOMB. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb. This is where it gets interesting, because the roles are FLIPPED. Sherlock was Jesus in the first entry, now if you take a look at this chapter. Its basically when Jesus was condemned, “locked in the tomb”. Jesus here is Moriarty. They didn’t understand why he was walking freely. Mary, being the disciple of Jesus, a “student” of Jesus is now Sherlock. Crying could possibly mean he was frustrated and decided to look into the tomb or “why he wasn’t jailed.”. The interesting addition was after this Jesus actually stood behind Mary, and Mary realizes this…but doesn’t RECOGNIZE him. It could be a meaning of Moriarty ‘implementing’ or ‘manipulating’ the idea of Lazarus unconsciously into Sherlock’s brain. Remember, Sherlock was the one who chose the building. (As mentioned in dialouges).
3. 5-10-11 : John 5 : 10-11, Sherlock declared an Expert Witness. Chapter is THE HEALING AT THE POOL. 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” In this Chapter, Jesus cured a man by telling him to Pick up his mat and walk. Once again, Jesus could’ve represented Sherlock. Sherlock cured the man by telling him to pick up his mat and walk. This could also translate to Sherlock being able to “cure” him because he is an expert, he knows what to say. Regardless of the fact that there are some people who still don’t believe. Consciousness was starting to spread.
4. 11-10-11 : John 11 : 10-11 Moriarty Vanishes. Chapter is THE DEATH OF LAZARUS. 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friendLazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” This is where it gets creepy, Because here Jesus is once again flipped, Moriarty. He was waiting for Sherlock to take the bait, to make a mistake. He is going to wake him up, he’s coming for Sherlock.
5. 19-11-11 : John 19 : 11 (since 11-11 = one verse). This is when Sherlock and John were on the run from the police. GUESS WHAT THE CHAPTER TITLE IS.
JESUS SENTENCED TO BE CRUCIFIED
Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” This is when John and Sherlock were fugitives, they were SENTENCED to be captured. Jesus/Sherlock is saying that he won’t be able to get caught unless someone else is perhaps smarter than me. Therefore, the one who turns him in to Moriarty is guilty and in a hella lotta trouble.
6. 20-11-11 : John 20 : 11. Sherlock commits suicide. Chapter Title THE EMPTY TOMB. 11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb. Yes, we are back again to the same Chapter. But look how the meaning have changed. Does this remind you of a specific scene in the Reichenbach fall? Mary is John. Now as mentioned before, someone was watching Mary weep. Before it was Jim watching Sherlock’s every move. Now? Sherlock is watching John grieve.
Now here is the even more interesting part. There is a dissonance between the suicide time of the one mentioned in the movie and the one in John’s blog. We thought it would be just a writer’s error. Right?
W . R . O . N . G
16-6-11, John 16 : 6 - 11, THE DISCIPLES GRIEF WILL TURN TO JOY.
6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
This is an incredible Biblical Passage. The Advocate in the New Testament depends on the context of the passage, but generally it means One who speaks in ones Defense. One who was SENT by the Father as a helper in court. LOOK AT 8-11. People didn’t believe in Sherlock anymore, he was in a scandal thanks to Moriarty. Because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer. This straight up screams ‘I’m going to die John.”.
This all combines into one thing. By the Advocate, Sherlock means the reason, the defense of his innocence, the one information that clarifies his name, can only come if Sherlock dies. Or else, they will NEVER KNOW THE TRUTH. Take a look at this quote from TRF, THIS WILL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY.
“This phone call – it’s, er … it’s my note. It’s what people do, don’t they – leave a note?” - Sherlock
This is where the inconsistency of John’s blog dates come in. 16 - 6 - 11, John 16 : 6 - 11, the Chapter and Verses that PERFECTLY forms a “Suicide Note.” , an “Explanation.” do you see what I mean now? THIS IS SHERLOCK’S SUICIDE NOTE.
Sherlock, knew he is going to die. By the Lazarus keyword, to the reference of the GOSPEL OF JOHN, he knew what this passage says. It all clicked in his head. He has an emotional reaction from it. Familiar to this step by step response? Congratulations! It’s the Lazarus Theory of Appraisal/Emotions.
Situation –> Arousal/Realization –> Emotions.
It all clicked in Sherlock’s brain. He figured it out too late. What Moriarty had done to him. This is why there’s a different date from Sherlock’s death from what is shown in the wikia/newspaper and in John’s blog. It was on purpose. It was a Note, a suicide Note.
Which means, in the end after Moriarty’s death. Sherlock realized and knew he lost.
Now take at the dates. There’s one number that keeps occurring. The number 11. 11 consist of 1, and 11 itself. Take a look at the Chapter Title of John 1, and John 11. They are..
THE WORD BECAME FLESH and THE DEATH OF LAZARUS.
The story became a reality. Lazarus happened.
“I’ve given you a glimpse, Sherlock, just a teensie glimpse of what I’ve got going on out there in the big bad world. I’m a specialist, you see? Like you.“―Moriarty in ”The Great Game“.
Moriarty implemented the Lazarus Theory of Emotions, from Dr. Richard Lazarus (A real person), in Sherlock’s mind. How did I know? Sherlock was the one who CHOSE THE BUILDING. Moriarty pointed to the Fall of Man with the Apple IOU. Moriarty left biblical clues on the Newspaper dates since he loves Newspapers. Fairytails too. Moriarty encouraged Sherlock to fall, by ‘feeding’ him what he needs like the Rich Man and Lazarus (Gospel of Luke) story. But most importantly…
Moriarty knew Sherlock would be coming back from the dead.
He still have plans made with Eurus doesn’t he?
But regardless of what happened in the Reichenbach fall. Moriarty won. The damage was done. The Lazarus Theory he used to fill Sherlock’s brain with no more other options until it was too late to realize..was done. That’s why Sherlock experienced the Lazarus Theory of Emotions, the Secondary Appraisal (Part 2), why he coded ‘Lazarus’ to Mycroft (Part 1), and creating a double phenomenon by also doing the Lazarus Theory of Fake belief for John. 16-6-11, John 16 : 6-11 was his note. He realized he was too late.
We all thought that Sherlock chose LAZARUS, but this CHANGES EVERYTHING.
Sherlock didn’t choose LAZARUS.
MORIARTY DID.
And that’s why he Jumped.
“I will burn your heart,” Moriarty said.
The Gospel of JOHN
“I owe you”, JOHN mentioned in his Grave.
…and when Sherlock came back to London, who did he want to see again?
John.
Moriarty won.
The game just began

One year ago
Do you remember US, one year ago, S4, and we were INCREDULOUS. Waiting for a secret episode. A lifetime ago. I still remember how it felt.It felt like I was a completely different person.
I have no idea if someone pointed this out before, but this is the scene in TPLOSH where Holmes says that he’s gay. Now look at the flowers behind him …
And this is TSOT … ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
The whole show basically goes back to this scene. Tea code? This. 221B’s wallpaper pattern? The door in this scene. Everything, everything. It’s beautiful. It’s infuriating.

The “Baker Street Chronicle Sherlock Special” about TJLC: “TJLC – 'The Johnlock Conspiracy' or: The search for truth” by Lorelai Lee (review)
My “Baker Street Chronicle Sherlock Special” has arrived! And there is a VERY SPECIAL gimmick that fell out of the oversized envelope: THE red balloon! (It scares me a bit with its sad face.) But I LOVE IT!!!
My first idea was to translate the four pages from German to English (smallprint) to let you take part in @lorelei-lee 's musings about TJLC. I had already started when I realised the copyright issues. Well well. It's something you simply don't do. Someone owns that content. Even if not many people are going to read this, I can't just translate it and blast it all over the internet.
Sorry guys. The only thing I can do is to give you an overview and cite a few paragraphs for analytical reasons. The article is quite OK! It is totally pro TJLC, thank you, @lorelei-lee! Still, German TJLClers, go buy it! It's really quite cool and not expensive since you get THE balloon!
interesting thing, a tuxedo
a couple of months ago i was reading this book for my lgbt+ american history and literature class called The Beautiful Room is Empty by Edmund White, which is a semi-autobiographical book about a gay man growing up in the 50s and 60s (and it’s also really really good). but as i was trying to read it in peace i stumbled upon this line that just stopped me because i knew it, and i just sat there like ‘what the fuck’ before realizing why i recognized it:
“But for me, the tuxedos (which depersonalize waiters and lend distinction to friends)…”
here’s the paragraph in full
and i realized that it’s almost identical to one of sherlock’s lines in the empty hearse
and i was like oh my god MARK and it was bothering me for months because i researched it to see if maybe both sources were referencing something else altogether but i couldn’t find anything. and so finally this past sunday at the sherlocked con, i was like ‘shit i never asked mark about that book’ and i looked over and there was no one in line for an autograph from him so i went over and asked the woman next to him if i could take a few minutes to ask him a question
and she said yes and so i started telling him this whole story and it was really sweet because when i asked him if he’d read the book he was like “of course i have :)” like genuinely happy to be talking about this book and possibly to realize what i was bringing up
and i told him about how i’d recognized it and realized what it was and i was about to say ‘because it’s in the empty hearse!’ and he cut me off and said ‘it’s the line about the waiter’ and i was like ‘!!! yeah!’ and he started reciting the line with me like. saying it right behind him and i got so excited to have that finally answered, because i mean he just straight up told me that he referenced THAT quote in THAT SCENE
so um. he Did That thanks for coming to my talk
WOW!
My final(ly solved) problem
I HATED IT. SO MUCH.
Alright, first I decided TFP was John’s mind (or memory) bungalow, whatever, but now it seems there will never be a series 5, and then it simply does not make sense.
So, after ignoring the final problem by simply not watching it again I decided, the whole series ended somehow with 3 and that there were SERIOUS reasons for Mofftiss to NOT LET IT HAPPEN and make a skam of series 4, some half heartedly so not gay version and an illogical ending.
But even if Mofftiss were forced (somehow) to not let it happen (JOHNLOCK, the kiss, the romance), why would they make something that feels so off as 4/3 The final problem? Dunno.
I now have a very nice solution for myself. No one needs to believe it, there is no evidence (yes, I know, nada) but I believe it and it makes it bearable for me.
In the end of series 4/2 (YES, you all remember, the embrace, the tears) Sherlock and John got together. And in TFP they are a couple. That explains why they are both so easygoing with each other and why both seem to be so changed. And why Mycroft never questions Sherlock’s choice whom to shoot.
Family business? That’s exactly why John stays. Yes. My private little scheme. I am very happy with it.

Dare I say?
It comes to me in waves of sad what BBC Sherlock could have been and then what it ended up being. I keep thinking I’ve processed it, and then another wave of regret? nostalgia? wishful thinking? hits me. I would never have started watching this show if I knew The Final Problem was going to be where it ended up. God, remember how amazing S1 and S2 were? The episodes crackled with life and energy, and dare I suggest it, sexual tension between the leads. I had never seen anything like it. S3 got goofy, and TAB was a real head scratcher, but it was still recognizable as Sherlock. S4 just ruined it all for me. I can only think S1 and S2 were a happy accident. Despite themselves, the showrunners managed to make magic without even realizing it.
So, I try to let S4 exist in some parallel dimension, some fever dream or mind palace romp that has nothing to do with the edgy, exciting, dripping with meaning universe of broken, but evolving people who CARE goddamn it. They care so much it twists them up, just like we the fandom CARED.
So I’m going to keep caring about this universe and these characters, but I’m going to find the fan-made extensions, the stories and art and vids that make stories that MEAN something out of the mess that BBC Sherlock left us with.
Yeah, if I could unremember S4, I would.
I have found myself going back and rereading my post-Reichenbach stories (”Empty Houses” and “Young Men Carbuncular”) really just for comfort. I’ve been struck by the evidence of how differently I felt about the show and the characters before the beginning of S3. I loved writing the post-S3 story “Law Like Love,” but I was very much aware at the time that I was now deliberately going against the grain, whereas the post-S2 stuff felt like it could have been continuing the canon S2 arc.
To me, it was a better show before the Hiatus. I loved the characters more and I felt more at home with the show. The baffling nature of TEH basically heralds a new approach to the show which worked for me less and less until we got to the hellhole of TFP.
Gods this captures my feelings on the situation so much. Only it is then emphasized because I am a geographer and the large social-political picture of it all hits me. Because media really does not happen in a bubble. There is a large social-political conversation going on and they made this great show… and then twisted it to support those who are against everything that it could have been.
There are people in Asia who have to do ‘marriages of convenience’ to hide who they are. To protect themselves from persecution and death. There are those in Russia who have to hide, to protect themselves from being arrested. LGBT in America are constantly facing criticism and there is an instructor at the university where I trained that kept receiving death threats. Another person went into the student LGBT lounge brandishing a knife and threatening the people who worked in the office… but even then it is not as bad as the persecution faced by LGBT in so many different countries.
In the US someone was going into office that supports undermining and taking away LGBT rights and officially became president the same weekend the last episode of Season 4 aired. His vice president believes that those who are gay are mentally ill and has supported directing funds to ‘conversion’ therapy.
The “alt-right” (term coined by the Nazi Spencer) or rather, far-right extremism, is on the rise -world wide- and so many people are dealing with hate and persecution. Threats to their rights, freedom and lives…
Media does not happen in a bubble and this was important. The TIMING was important. People are at risk and that risk is rising…
And these two entitled white males decided to take a show that was (perhaps accidentally) positively coded and make one of the most homophobic episodes ever that systematically undermined and attacked homosexuality at several angles. They wrote it in such a way to support the very people who did not need the additional support as it was. Every single homophobic individual who was mocking people for seeing anything else in the show validated while being given additional ammunition to attack and belittle those they were already targeting.
All of this, and to a show that is based on books that has its histories steeped in LGBT history. That has had LGBT subtext questioned and discussed since the original books were written… always 1895.
This could have been something special… something great. They could have made history. Instead they supported the very people who were already targeting, belittling and assaulting LGBT as it was. And now there is the situation going on with Youtube… this isn’t getting any better.
Media does not happen in a bubble.
They had a platform, they had an opportunity, they had a story that was already in the works— and they twisted to be as no-homo as possible, ruining the show in the process in their efforts to gut out what they had put in it to begin with.
It is hard to accept it as being real. That they would -do- something like that. At the same time every interview that Steven goes to and every word he says seems to support that they did it intentionally and no, they really do not care.
I want to believe there is something more out there but every sign and two months of nothing shows that there isn’t. They really did think it was just one big ‘gag’ and really did try to gut out any hint of anything else being there the last episode. “The final problem” indeed… there was a rug pull, and it was on us. The final problem is homophobia, and they ended up being on the wrong side of it. It hurts. It feels like betrayal because it is, and it is hard to accept, much less be able to move past from.

“Here,” John says almost as soon as Sherlock’s settled next to him. “I wanted to give you something special today. Something important. And I, uh, I think it is.” He says it with a little shrug, a tiny bit of doubt creeping in.
“It is,” Sherlock reassures him, and John huffs out a laugh.
“You don’t even know what it is yet.”

After the reception ends, John and Sherlock exchange wedding gifts.
Listen, as a member of this fandom, there are just certain fics that you have to read.
between each beat are words unsaid was written in those pre s4 halcyon days when we couldn’t even fathom that we would need fix-it fics for s4.
If I owned a time machine, there are many things I would do, but one of them would be finding a way to get this story into the hands of Moftiss, and showing them what their story could have become.
The original story, and this sequel across these pages, by @hudders-and-hiddles is the love story that our John and Sherlock deserved.
And in the end, it doesn’t really matter if Gatiss and Moffat let us down. Because @watsonshoneybee and @hudders-and-hiddles gave us the story we all hoped for, and because of them we will always know what the love story should have looked like.
No coincidence
Why now?
The Guardian tributes a very prominent space to Arthur Conan Doyle: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/mar/19/arthur-and-sherlock-michael-sims-diligent-study-conan-doyle-holmes.
Things like that don’t happen just like that.
Love this, yes! This is exactly where I’m at.
I was just about to write something similar yesterday. After S4, I realized that I was always just waiting for something similar to S1 or S2. I was just letting S3 exist in my mind with the hopes of getting a new season that would give us the old dynamic. I guess the way they treated Mary ruined the show for the past two seasons. I liked parts of TSOT or HLV but after S4 i can’t even enjoy fix-its for S3. I reach back to old post TRF fictions. The magic was there. I think the lead actors did great acting there. It was like a symphonic orchestra.
I lost all my enthusiasm for the upcoming developments and seasons unfortunately. I think their possessiveness over the perception of their creation, rigidness in their direction and lack of “situational awareness”( ironically a pilotage term that means it all comes to the decisions of the pilots when multiple variables need reading, for example landing a plane in chaos) brought us here.
They wanted to distance themselves from what they did in the first two seasons rather than amping it. That’s what created the plot holes, rushed new characters, an unnecessarily determining role for Mary Morstan etc. What we ended up with is unrecognizable.
This violent change in the obliquity of the ecliptic brought their own Noah’s flood.
No one wanted to love season 4 more than I did. But sadly, apart from the brilliant acting, nothing can excuse the incoherance, out of character behaviour, numerous plot holes, rushed story lines and thin characters that no one really cares about (Eurus). The writers tried too hard to be clever, were writing it for themselves and not for the fans. This is unfortuntantly what happens when a show gets to the level of fame that Sherlock has. The first three seasons were phenomenal. I even enjoyed The Abominable Bride. But the last season deviated so much from what everyone loved about the show, that the “happy ending” just didn’t work. It felt way too rushed.
All good thoughts friends. I long for the alternate universe version of Sherlock where they kept solving cases and developing the characters and their relationships LIKE in S1 and S2. God - that must have been an amazing show!!!
Can you imagine though? If the Fall and Mary never happened? If Moriarty never interfered in their lives or even if he did, he was eliminated before he could cause some real damage? If it was just a detective solving a crime and then returning home to his boyfriend, no questions asked, like Mark once referenced. How glorious would that have been.
I’ll join you on that alternate plane, @alexxphoenix42! But I do feel sad at the thought that “I would never have started watching this show if I knew The Final Problem was going to be where it ended up.” I know that may have been hyperbole, but it hurts, the idea of never having experienced this show! I dearly hope you can feel gratitude to the beauty that this show created, in its earlier series and in this fandom, to know you would still endure the pain and heartache of s4 to have discovered this fandom ❤ I am so grateful to know you, and share this space with you!!!
I can’t count how many times I have watched season one to three. Countless times.
After season4 came out, I watched every episode two times in the first week. The incredulous first time and the “that can’t be true”-second time.
Even stayed away from tumblr for a longtime. Now I consider watching TST a third time, a little bit afraid. But looking for CLUES. I still can’t fathom that they (Moftiss) have gone from extraordinaire to extra dumb. I still hope to find reason.
So what I will be looking for is basically this: All the time in 1-3 we, the TJLC audience, see Sherlock being in love with John. Could it be that - apart from the wedding speach - John never ever gets the least hint how Sherlock feels about him? Could it be that the Tarmac scene we interpret as supressed love confession is cynic and cold for John? Could it be that John, after that, really tries to accept that Sherlock is basically a fucked up emotionally cold bastard he happens to be in love with? So who is there for him? His assassin wife. And for Rosie he is going to be a loving father who simply will accept that he is the idiot for the two coldblooded cheating and coldhearted geniuses in his life.
For me this is the only explanation how John could beat up Sherlock - such a heartwrenching emotionally draining scene I very well could have lived without.
Second Best
You know how this whole discussion about Irene Adler is just so superfluous?
Her mobile was in his SECOND BEST dressing gown.
The final problem revisited (2)
So - when they take up the lead again, when the writers of BBC Sherlock create “The lost special” (I was not aware until one of you mentioned it that there actually IS a story by ACD called “The lost special”) or they’ll do a series five, after the public outrage they caused with ep. 4, this would have to take back some of the things that happened. They would have to “undo” the harm.
How would they do it? Considering their former great selves (great writing, lots of clues, multilayered storytelling) AND considering this kind of storytelling happened in “The final problem” although we can not see it now because we take the episode for real - we might expect for a next episode the reinterpretation of what happened in TFP. At least some of the things that happened in TFP have to get a different meaning.
Like the three Garrideb guys hanging in front of that window. They might be reinterpreted as “We show you ‘The three Garridebs’. In this episode TFP. For real.
In my opinion the Garridebs-moment, that moment from the original ACD story, is shown in this episode.
My ever first impression of this totally out of character episode was that this is John’s feverish dream to explain what happened after he has been shot by his therapist (and many of you came to the same conclusion).
This allows us to take a new look at the “I love you”-scene. This is John, who hears Sherlock telling HIM “I love you”.
Sometimes when my alarm clock goes of in the morning I will integrate it into my dream, like for example, in my dream there is suddenly a firealarm, or a school bell ringing.
So this is what John does: Hearing Sherlock tell him ‘I love you’ has to fit into his fever dream, and since Sherlock (at least in his opinion) would never really tell anyone those three words, it has to be a made up scene. Hearing Sherlock saying it it sounds real to John’s subconscious mind, not fake at all. So there has to be a reason Sherlock MAKES it sound real, although it is fake anyways. Therefore John (in his dream) makes up a situation where Sherlock is forced to make the “I love you” sound real.
Sounds complicated now. Will be a slap to the forehead when we see it. For real.
The final problem revisited
When Arthur Conan Doyle killed Sherlock Holmes in 1893 in the story “The final problem” people were outraged.
20.000 people terminated there subscription of “The Strand”. “The Strand” received complaints, thousands of them.
In the streets people wore black mourning bands and black ties. Doyle received letters and letters, irritated, confused, infuriated - even years later.
‘You Brute!’ was the beginning of a letter which one lady sent me....” Doyle wrote in his autobiography.
So, what happened when the BBC aired the probably last episode of their wildly successful “Sherlock”-series, “The final problem”?
They received complaints. Thousands of them. People were irritated, confused, infuriated. Writer Mark Gatiss got insulted by fans on twitter.
These two geniuses. They were actually able to recreate the public outrage of 124 years ago.
Although this necessarily couldn’t be attempted by killing of Holmes (that episode was not called “The final problem”!) it was accomplished by ending it with an episode that does not seem to be real, and the long term slow burning romance between Sherlock and John is suddenly neglected.
This outrage is PLANNED. They wanted it to be like this. They wanted people to be disappointed, to CRAVE a different ending.
