“i promise – i won’t let you down.”
“I have no doubt. And I will do all I can for you.”
The Dragon Queen smiled. She really had grown to appreciate Jon. He seemed like a genuinely honest man.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous,” Daenerys replied. “Other than briefly flying over it, I’ve never been to Winterfell.”
“You’d be a fool not to be nervous.” Jon muttered with blunt honesty. “But I assure you my family will treat you with kindness. Though I’m afraid I cannot speak for all the Northern Lords. They may need some convincing…of which I’m sure you’re capable.” He gave the Dragon Queen a small smile.
The Dragon Queen looked into Jon’s eyes. She appreciated how transparent he was. Daenerys had never quite met a man like The King of the North.
“Jorah tells me Lyanna Mormont is quite the feisty one,” she chuckled.
“Aye.” Jon smiled agreeing with a thought of the young Mormont. “I dare say she’d make a better King than me.” He said before hesitating. “In fact. I know she would.”
Daenerys laughed lightly, shaking her head. She was amazed at how humble the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch was.
“Probably,” the Dragon Queen teased. “But from where I’m standing, you seem to be getting on fairly well.”
Was he getting on fairly well? It sure didn’t feel like it. He was worried he’d face an uproar when he returned to Winterfell with the Dragon Queen. Especially after what the mad king had done to Jons grandfather and uncle.
In all honesty Jon didn’t care for being king. It was thrown upon him and he was of course proud but it was a responsibility he didn’t care for. He wanted one thing and that was to stop the dead. “Thank you Dany..” he muttered in almost whisper. He already owed her so much. She’d lost a child for him and still was willing to help him.
Daenerys reached out, grabbed Jon’s upper arm, and gave it a gentle squeeze.
“I told you, you don’t need to thank me,” she spoke softly. “If anything, I should be thanking you.”
If it weren’t for the King of the North, she would have continued her headstrong quest for the Iron Throne, likely to be blindsided by the Night King. Well… Moreso than when he took Viserion from her.
Jon looked down at her hand on his then met her gaze with a gentle smile. His eyes locked with hers. Big brown eyes, dark yet with a glint of fire to them.
“I should probably get back to my room. We sail early.” Jon bowed his head to her slightly. “Your Grace.” It was becoming more comfortable for Jon to call her that now he’d bent the knee.
Daenerys let her hand drop to her side. The Dragon Queen had not realized how long she had let her hand linger, maintaining eye contact with her light, violet eyes.
“Right,” Daenerys replied, maintaining her composure. “Sleep well, Jon Snow.”
The Dragon Queen turned to slowly walk toward the door. She’d be lying if she said she did not enjoy the King of the North calling her “your grace.”
Daenerys turned around to give Jon a faint smile, only to get lost in those dark eyes again.
The two of them turned back at the exact same moment as Jon went for one last look and yet again their eyes were locked on each others.
“Goodnight Daenerys.” He muttered dragging his gaze away from hers which was one of the hardest things he’d had to do. Finally he left her room.
Daenerys watched as Jon left her room. She had grown to enjoy the King of the North’s company far more than she expected. The Dragon Queen wasn’t sure what to make of that, but she suddenly realized she was too exhausted to dwell on it.
After her nightly ritual of shedding out of her coat and sliding into her nightshift, letting down her braids, and blowing out her bedside candle, Daenerys dragged herself into bed. She lay her head gently on the pillow, staring at the wall beside her. Her mind was occupied with not only the trip North set out for tomorrow, but also with thoughts of the Bastard of Winterfell as she slowly drifted to sleep.
Finally returning to his room. Jon removed the heavy steel and leather clothing stamped with the sigil of House Stark before climbing into the bed.
Despite how comfortable the thick furs were Jon just lay stating at the ceiling. Tomorrow he was going back home. Back to Winterfell. He wished it was for a good reason. Returning home to live out the rest of his days in the North. But unfortunately this was just the beginning of what was to come.
As he lay there he found himself closer to sleep but was unable to shake away the thoughts of the silver haired dragon queen.
“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.”

There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself. No new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing.
“So this is what it feels like.”

He is a boy no longer, she realised with a pang. He is sixteen now, a man grown. Just look at him. War had melted all the softness from his face and left him hard and lean.
