Not at all to his surprise, Flounder found that he loved the college classes he was taking. Ariel could joke about him being a ânerdâ all she wanted, marine sciences were cool. He especially loved the class he had on Thursdays, âBiodiversity of Marine Organismsâ, which was taught by an enthusiastic lecturer who they called Mr Ray. Some might say Mr Ray was a little too enthusiastic, but Flounder would not be one of them. In fact, he pulled his chair up to the front of the classroom during every lecture and sat with rapt attention throughout the entire thing, and he was also one of the few who willingly participated in the sing-alongs Mr Ray tried to engage the students in for learning certain concepts (though heâd die if Ariel ever caught wind of it).
Flounder had just come out of that class, spirits significantly higher than they had been in ages after Mr Ray had announced they were to be going on an excursion to the Disney City Aquarium the week after next. When he was marvelling at the diversity of fish species Disney City had in its very own port or thinking about ways to encourage marine conservation, it was a lot easier for Flounder to not think about a certain blonde, or any dumb feelings he might have about said blonde.
Remembering that he had promised to meet up with Ariel at the cafeteria after his class, since he had the rest of the day off, Flounder weaved his way through the throngs of students on campus (sometimes, being small was a good thing, at least when it came to getting through crowds). Subconsciously, his footsteps began to beat in time to the guitar riffs someone was playing on the quad, though he kept his accompanying beat-boxing in his head. Before he reached their designated meeting place, however, Ariel reached him.
September meant the beginning of another college year for Ariel. Her last one hadnât been too eventful, maybe because she skipped more than half her classes that year - but she did have a valid reason⌠for some of these truancies. Ariel was wandering aimlessly around the library as she waited for Flounderâs class to finish. Due to her own poor planning, Ariel hadnât checked her own lesson plan, and didnât realise she had to have some research books in preparation for this class in particular. So of course that meant Ariel hadnât read the eleven pages requested by her lecturer beforehand. She got away with sitting right at the back of the hall, ducking her head when questions were raised. Luckily for Ariel, there were still some of the books required in the performance section, so she quickly took those out and browsed the rest of the shelves soon after.
Ariel kept checking the plastic watch around her wrist, and her phone - because something she found buried in the sand couldnât always be too reliable, for the time Flounder told her to meet him. Five minutes to, and Ariel had already darted out the stuffy room, and rushed her way down to the cafeteria, only just spotting his head bopping up and down to the distant acoustics. Ariel laughed and gently ran into the back of him, grabbing onto the strap of his backpack with a small jump and a giggle in his ear.
âSooo, what did you learn about the marine biothingies?â Ariel let go of him and grinned as she faced her friend. âThink I can sneak in next time? I didnât have my books and fins - it was sooo awkward, I think I might avoid that class for the next two weeksâŚâ She trailed off as blew her bangs out of her eyes, and then remembered the list she gave Flounder of all the things he had to do as a freshman in college. Wait⌠Did she even give him yet? Ariel dug in the pocket of her shorts until she pulled out a crumpled piece of paper and inserted it into his hand with a smirk. âHere! This is the list. Go on, read it - we miight be able to do four to seven before my next class, unless you wanna be a big guppy that is.â
thelittle-ariel:
What do you mean heâs not cute? Flounderâs one of the cutest guppies ever! Aww, Adella I donât like you talking about my friend like that, everyoneâs being so mean to him today, but fiiiine. Maybe you donât want any ship instead!
Cute-cute, though! Heâs no Chris Hemsworth, letâs be real here. Like, I wasnât trying to be mean Ariel, itâs just facts! Wait, other people are being mean to him? Way to twist a girlâs fins, Ari, now I feel really bad. I said he was great, didnât I? And I do want a ship! Just, you know, not with Flounder. Besides, donât you think heâs interested in someone else?
You mean Thor man? The one with the lightning hitty thing? Mhhhm, okay if it is that guy, then I suppose youâre kindaaa right about that.
I suggested Flounder to almost everyone and they all turned him down! Poor Flounder, I thought maybe thereâd be a chance Arista would like it, but nope! Still hung up on that bread guy.
Okay then, so Iâll ship you with Thor Man! You kinda look like his girlfriend in the movies, but obviously youâre way better.
Oh and I donât knooow about that. Maybe? Who knows, right? It could be aaaaanyone...
T B H, I kind of always figured you'd eventually grow the cojones to, like, approach Eric and confess or whatever, so I guess I shipped you guys? But I can see that you're happy with this Kovu guy too, so I also ship you two? Everything is always soooo complicated with you, Ariel.
Y-You did? Oh my gosh no, I-I could never speak to him. You know how you are with boys and how you just kinda blurt loads of... stuff? Well I was the complete opposite it was like, no words would come out! And now they do but theyâre more like the weird things you say, but you actually gave me a nice answer! Iâm surprised, I was expecting Scuttle or someone after what I said to you!
Buut, Iâm not that complicated. Am I?
wont-leaveyou:
thelittle-ariel replied to your post::x
Uhuh, yeah I am fiiiiine. I j-just⌠How have you been? W-with everything and uh, thingsâŚ
Well okay if you say so. But youâd let someone know if there was something wrong, right?
With everything and things? Well, everything is going well! But honestly, things could be going a little better. Haha! How are things and, uh, everythings with you?
Oh yeah, I will! B-but nothingâs wrong, so itâs okay!
Good! Iâm glad to hear everything is going well, but oh no, the things! I hope the things do get better for you, nobody ever wants bad things.
Ohh you know, things are good for me! But those everythings can be kinda annoying sometimes, unfortunately. Howâs.... your flute?
aristatriton:
Hehehehe are you suuuuure? He didnât, like, seem that wrong to me!!Â
Hehehe, Iâm just kidding!! I know you and Floundy are, like, super duper besties forever!! And he is sooo not your weird scruffy outlaw type, hehehe! Not that that haaaaaas anythiiiing to do with aaaaanythiiiiing!! At aaallll!!
Whaaaaaat?! Floundy can get someone he really likes!! That, like, he is really super in like-like with!! Thatâs not me Ariel GOSHHHH!
We are the super duper besties forever!! And Kovuâs not that weird, weâre a lot weirder than him, but I guess he is a bit scruffy and an outlaw -- Oh my gosh, an outlaw! That is so neat!
...But youâre right that has nothing to do with anything! Why are we talking about him, weâre talking about you and Flounder being the OTP!
Mhhhm, he really likes-- Are you sure? Maybe you should ask him who heâs really in like with then, right? Okay, fiiine. What about that bread guy you always talk about? Wanna be shipped with him?
You and me are the oh tee pee, duh. But I guess you and Kovu are kinda cute too. Kinda. I can half see it.
We are the biggest oh tee pee!
Awww Kiri, but no way near as cute as us! If we were in one of those shows my sisters make me watch, people would ship us â I can tell.
Hmm, I gotta say Ariel... I see you with Flounder a lot. You guys seem pretty close, hahaha!
O-Oh my gosh...Â
Flounder?! Ummm....
Not like thaat! Weâre friends, like best buddies! N-Nothing else, ewww -- No offense to him but... no.
under the stars | kiara & ariel.
Kiara had never travelled so far into the Outlands. She couldnât speak for Ariel (who knew where that girl had been? She probably didnât know herself) but she had always seemed to catch herself at the border between city and wasteland, amongst the dive bars and seedy shops, unable to take a step further because â well, she didnât know. It might have had something to do with Simbaâs voice in the back of her mind. Incessant. Annoying. (fading) That voice wasnât there anymore. Despite being the most impulsive person sheâd ever met, Simba had been eighty percent of Kiaraâs impulse control. Now that he was gone, there was no-one to talk her out of all her bad ideas, or prevent Ariel from enabling them, and so the two girls found themselves trekking through the Outlands, arm in arm, pretending they werenât about to collapse under the weight of their packs.
It hadnât all been a matter of boldly going, though. The two had met at Arielâs house, packed up, set off laughing, and had promptly come to a halt where the city ended and the Outlands, the real Outlands, began. The sun beat down, the sounds of the city could be heard faintly in the distance, and the two exchanged a look that said, we shouldnât be doing this. Simbaâs ghost rose up in the back of Kiaraâs mind. Of course you shouldnât be doing this, he seemed to say. Go home before I tell Dad. (but simba never sounded like that never sounded so far away and formal and the simba in her mindâs eye was smirking but not in the way he did not in the right way and she couldnât remember how he looked and she didnât know if she ever would) Kiara took a deep breath, put her shoulders back, and flashed a small grin at Ariel, one she had seen on her cousinâs face many a time, a display of cocky bravery she wasnât quite feeling.
âDare you,â
And then they were off again, across the invisible border, and everything seemed to return to normal. Perhaps setting off in the summer hadnât been the brightest idea, but after a few hours of walking, they seemed to have found a nice spot. A few trees were around to give shade, and didnât look too bad for being half-dead, there was a small lake close by (lake was a strong word. it was more like a large puddle, but there was still more water than mud, and that was good enough for her) and there was a lot of open space where they could pitch their tent. Kiara shrugged off her pack, letting it thud off the dry ground as she stretched. There was a dull ache in her shoulder blades and the small of her back and the muscles in her legs burned from the walk, but she didnât want to bring the mood down by complaining. Pulling off her sunglasses, she gave the place another glance around and turned towards the redhead, gesturing around with the hand that held the glasses; the other had come up to rub the back of her neck, which was feeling a little tender after being exposed to so much sun.
âWell, this looks pretty cosy to me. Anâ I donât know about you, but I need to take a break before my legs fall off. Should we make camp, or keep going?â
There had always been a promise between the pair, one that could never be fulfilled, not until now that is, under unfortunate circumstances. The promise was to have a little outing to the Outlands together and the promise of camping together too, without any supervision. The thought of Simbaâs disapproval had put her off the idea for quite some time now, but Ariel knew she would keep her safe; she knew she wouldnât ever let any harm come to Kiara, and she wished Simba was able to see that when he still could.
Ariel could barely keep her eyes open as they trekked through the dry lands, she used the sound of Kiara's rustling backpack to follow and managed to disguise her exhaustion behind her sunglasses. Perhaps she should've checked the forecast before spontaneously arranging this trip also. Her legs began to tremble under the amount of weight she carried and the soles of her feet felt like they were on fire with every step she took. Ariel didn't want to make any type of fuss, however, and knew it would be best to keep this to herself and carry on through the discomfort.Â
There was the sudden loud thud, surrounded by the dust particles produced from the dried up mud. Ariel's eyelids snapped open at the unexpected noise and slid her shades onto the top of her head, followed by a stretch. Only now could she notice the aching pain from where the straps dug into her shoulders. She thumped her bag onto the ground a well, taking in their surroundings as she shielded her vision. It was actually quite picturesque, in a âeverything is slowly dying' type of way. Of course Ariel packed her camera, so she could make use of this later. At Kiara's suggestion, she nodded breathlessly for a moment before taking a deep breath to finally use her vocal chords "Make-- camp -- definitely make camp." She swiped the sweat off of her forehead with the back of her hand and plopped herself onto the ground to unzip the backpack. She really should have checked the forecast.
"Did you pack the tent or did I? ...Wait, found it!" Ariel managed to yank one of the cables surrounding the wrapped up material out of the bag and continued to dig deeper. "We shouldn't be bothered here, it's kinda secluded from the uh, rowdier parts -- which is a good thing and -- oh my gosh, the sunset is going to look amazing from here!" Ariel began to attempt to put the tent together herself as she spoke, but still rustled through her backpack to find more tools which may be of use. In all honesty, she'd never done this before. She has helped pitch one, but never completely by herself and right now she hoped Kiara had some sort of idea on how to do this-- or had maybe packed the instructions.
imnotaguuppy:
Well yeeeeaaah, kinda. They let me go last week. Yeah, I know that was Poca, b-but thereâs still a chance there are real sharks out there! The tourists deserve to know theyâre risking getting an arm o-or a leg bitten off when theyâre out there, okay?!Â
Sebastian? Well, maybe⌠but I kinda think if theyâre looking for âprofessionalâ dancers, they mean someone who might have gone to a school for that. And actually, I think I might already have something! This girl Emily, she told me the place she works at is hiring. Itâs some bar, uh, out near the Outlands, which isnât⌠exactly ideal⌠but she was also really nice so I kind of feel like I should follow her up on it.Â
Sooooo you did lose your job. Okaaaay, but if there were sharks, donât you think we wouldâve heard about them by now?? I know daddy would stop us from going anywhere near any type of water ever again if there actually were any swimming about. Itâs the pirates you've got to worry about, but theyâre harmless too.
Wait -- you do?! Oh my gosh Flounder, thatâs great! -- Out near the Outlands? Oooooh, look at you working in a sketchy bar, next youâll be joining a gang and have matching jackets!
Iâm actually surprised though, that you wanna work by there, but if Emilyâs nice then it canât be too bad. People make it out to be so much worse than it is, youâll see what I mean. But good luck! I hope you do get it because bar work sounds kinda fun! You could learn how to make lots of different drinks where you shake those silver jug thingies around and you could collect more of those bottle tops for me -- please! Oh and of course Iâll come and visit you, Iâll have an excuse to go around those parts if you have to work there.
H-hey, so um, does anyone know of any open summer jobs close by?Â
I, uh, may have just lost the one I had. Not âcause of anything that bad, though! Just somethinâ about how⌠tellinâ all the tourists to watch out for sharks wasnât very good for business for a surf shopâŚÂ
But I swear Iâm a hard worker! And a good listener! Itâs the end of June though, so Iâm worried all the summer jobs might have already been taken. S-so, yeah, um, if you know about anything- yeah!
Flounder! You lost your job?! I told you thereâs not any sharks, that was just Poca pulling your leg! Although it would be kinda neat if there were.
Why donât you ask Sebastian for a job -- ooh what about that club he sings at sometimes! Maaaaybe theyâre looking for some professional dancers, youâd be great at that with your moves.
Okay, I got another one - Aurora, Lady Grimhilde, King Scar. Prince. Whatever, that guy.
Ewwwww, why!Â
Okay, Iâd bed⌠Aurora, because sheâs closest to my age and isnât old and noooo thank you.Â
Iâd wed Scar because maybe I can find out how he really got that scar without him shouting at me oh and behead Lady Grimhilde because I dunno why really. She might like it?
not-justaprincess replied to your post: not-justaprincess asked:Me, Hercu...
Oh, gross, I forgot about that - okay, me, Poca, Eric, go!
