I just remembered that kaz bekker killed a man by throwing him off a bridge because he told kaz about how he was blackmailing a black sex worker into having sex with him free of cost regularly bc he knew that she was keeping the gifts her client was giving her instead of giving them to her pimp who would probably have burnt her to death if found out. And i really think thats one of the most underrated scenes in SOC

Like the description of that scene was fucking ICONIC - the fact that kaz was about to reel that man back up the bridge after getting the information he needed from him but changed his mind after he told kaz that he had information about one of the girls at the menagrie,how kaz visibly got the homicidal note in his voice after he heard the man saying that,the fact that it become even more dangerous when he confessed that he was blackmailing her into giving him free sex bc that girl knew that shed be killed by tante heleen if he ratted her out to tante, the fact that kaz even tried to TELL that man how shitty it was that he was basically holding her life over her head to pressurize her into having sex with him .How kaz slowly began to let that man’s legs slide through his grasp and said “Its terible isnt it?Knowing someone holds your life in his hands” and threw him off the bridge after he screamed “Shes just a working girl!! im a good man” bruhh that was fucking awesome i fucking LOVE kaz bekker

Suddenly the whispers stop.

The dregs reply in unison. “No funerals.”

Screen flashes to the full shot of the six, basically from the previous six scenes put together. They all stare at the camera defiantly. Quick cuts to each of their faces in reverse order from the beginning. When it gets to Kaz, it flickers to his trademark razor-sharp I-will-cut-you-smile.

Screen goes black, title card comes up.

i was thinking about how baz is supposed to be a poc (half-egyptian if i’m correct) and him being a vampire makes him look like Casket Ready™. it kind of struck/strikes me as erasure, but then i also see penelope (a brown girl) and lgtbq+ characters with complex personalities that aren’t just token characters so i’m a bit conflicted on what to think about that. i GET that he’s a f a n t a s t i c a l creature which causes him to look a certain way. it’s not like baz changed or tried to change races via skin bleaching or shit, but it just has been on my mind (as a result of constant overthinking).

Finding out Novyi Zem was named after a radioactive tundra archipelago off the coast of Russia while being the grishaverse source of African coded black people and based on Australia instead of Africa (minus aboriginal people) but still contains imperialism made me astral project into the wall.

Yeah so Novyi Zem or Ravkan for “new land” despite the fact it is not new and has people who live and are from there and have their own language and culture is based on Australia according to Leigh probably for some frontierism fetish but Jesper, Leoni, and Aditi are coded as black African and not black aboriginal Australian, especially looking at the official art by Kevin Wada.

Despite all this, Ravkan imperialism means they have the Southern Colonies on the southmost part of the continent, kinda like South Africa, and we know how well that went. So Ravka just kinda labeled this a “new land” and made some colonies despite the local people, and the mysterious absence of aboriginal people.

as someone whose from australia this made me major mad since indigenous Australians rarely get any representation as it is and are stereotyped to the extreme. the colonisation of ravka is eerily like similar if not the same of how Australia was colonised, jus idk man,,, Leigh could’ve done so much with novyi zem but she had to fuck it up with her indecisiveness and lack of research, I still believe she should’ve made another country(s) for African coded black people and indigenous australian coded black people because her world building of novyi zem is all over the place.

It’s not dumb at all. You’re right! They should be two separate places. The unfortunate fact is, she wanted a “frontier” land, but frontierism is just romantic colonialism and has always come at the expense of the indigenous and aboriginal people. I actually have another post about it if you scroll down my blog. And by wanting black people (but apparently not Africans?) She erases a whole bunch of cultures all at once, which is a shame when she fleshed out her white culture countries so well.
