👑 Chapter Eight: The Great Waltz 👑
It was a very sweet awakening for Selene, who looked for her clothes to get dressed. It wasn't appropriate to be seen wearing her father's red robe—who knows what they would think!—or even in her underwear. She didn't want to think about what had happened the night before anymore. Knowing her heart was in limbo was the worst thing for a person, especially when the feelings were equally strong. Instead of saving a dynasty from ruin, she was trampling the last remaining shards under her heels. However, the Grand Ball had to be the final answer for her heart. She would decide that night, no matter if the other's heart broke. Turning around, she saw Tybalt standing with a book in his hand. He seemed pretty calm. S: Sorry to intrude. T: I asked Celeste if she could lend you one of his dresses. You know, the Grand Ball requires an appropriate dress code. S: You shouldn't have bothered. T: I was the one who asked you to stay here. It's partly my fault, too. Maybe you had already made plans, and I messed them up. Selene didn't know what to say. The fact that Tybalt was too calm didn't tell her the truth. S: Where is Celeste's room? T: First door on the left. Before she could take a step forward, she felt herself grabbed by the arm. It was a lightning-fast movement, so much so that it scared her. She looked at him, her eyes widening slightly; his gray irises were… icy. T: If you feel uncomfortable, let me know and I'll take you home. He immediately released her and let her go.
Selene left the Grand Duke's room, rubbing her arm. His grip had been strong, yet threatening. Did he know something about last night between her and Virgilio? The thought made her shiver. She, who worked so hard to keep a broken couple together, was jeopardizing her reputation as Cupid's advisor because of an unbalanced love. Because... yes, it was "unbalanced". She loved Tybalt's romantic charm, how he made her feel like a true duchess and was willing to do anything to give her what she wanted: money and power. But on the other hand, a passionate love driven by attraction, albeit genuine. The outcasted man who wielded a silver sword. She was so overwhelmed by her thoughts that she almost lost sight of Celeste's bedroom door. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door, shyly entering shortly after. She hoped she wasn't disturbing him. Judging by the dress hanging on the hanger on the left, she knew he was waiting for her. He showed up shortly after, dressed as he always did, his skin smooth and his hair soft. She could hardly believe Celeste was actually a man. C: Do you like this dress? I just hope it's not too big for you. She let herself get dressed. Celeste treated her like an older sister, helping her with the zipper of her dress and her necklace. She had thought of everything, even the mask—the one she would wear for the evening. However, Selene couldn't stop her thoughts. S: What if he doesn't like me? That question slipped from her lips and unfortunately Celeste had heard her whisper. C: You're absolutely stunning! If only I were like you, darling! You'll see, you'll win him over. S: How can you tell? C: Because I know Virgilio well. If he really wanted to make fun of you, he wouldn't have looked at you anymore. Don't you think so too?
S: Wait, how do you know we...? C: He was the one who confessed it to me, and he was serious. Believe me when I tell you, I've never seen him so in love with someone before yesterday. He can't stop thinking about you. S: I had no idea he was actually— C: My brother is a real romantic, but he never shows it. If you only knew how many times I caught him red-handed when he was reading "Romeo and Juliet". The revelation made her smile. Who would have expected this from the outcast of the family?
C: Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. I promised him, after all. S: Not even Tybalt? If he knew, he might... C: Dad wouldn't kick him out of the palace; the dynasty's reputation is at stake. At most… well, he might pillory him. Before she could ask why, Celeste continued talking, adjusting the skirt of her dress. He was quite attentive to detail. C: He has become strict with Virgilio since he refused to be put in the line of succession. He truly believed in him, but he will never accept his life away from the palace. Now Selene understood those flashes of lightning every time he and his father looked at each other, or how he spoke rudely to his sister. She also understood the sweetness he showed outside the palace, far from what held him prisoner. "This is the life I want: a humble life, without royal protocols to follow…" C: I know this shocked you. He should have been the one to tell you, but he didn't have the courage. S: I'm not shocked. I just… didn't expect it from him. C: You know, I didn't want to believe it either, but when I saw him so serious, I knew something in him had changed. It was you, I guess. Selene had never believed in the fairy tale of fixing someone, because no one would ever truly change for love. Or rather, he could, but he would never have "converted" as in the novels. If Virgilio had really changed, he had to see it with his own eyes. Suddenly, a mask appeared before his nose; Celeste. was holding out a golden one with some floral decorations. Selene hesitated to take it in his hands. C: I understand this is not easy, darling, but do what you feel like doing. Don't let someone dictate your life. Love whoever truly makes you happy. Selene looked at the mask again, her heart pounding. The passionate, rough lover, or the gentleman with the golden crown. Which of the two would truly make her happy?
