They grow out of it over time and sometimes faster if the situation requires it (cough cough everyone turned on Oakhurst) if they go through a traumatic or bad fledgling stage it has an impact on them when they're full grown vampires so most sires are very careful with their fledglings.

If course, Scott also went through a fledgling stage. Everyone assumed he had a good one, luxurious nest, complete safety, all the good stuff. Owen especially is jealous when he thinks about it, having lost his sire early into his own fledgling stage.

But in reality, Scott's sire was a rando on the street who turned him and left. Not even explaining the fledging stage. Scott had such a traumatic fledgling stage that he can't use his abilities, not even turning into a bat, unless he feels like he's in danger.

A non issue during Oakhurst and the days when vampire hunters were constantly threatening him but he's well aware of that truth. He's terrified of it being found out, both for pride and the idea that someone would use that information to betray him... Again.

Adding my own head annoys onto this. Fledglings who have a traumatic fledgling stage show. Of course, no one in Oakhurst(except Abolish and Cleo) would know what makes a traumatized fledgling.

One of the biggest things is the eyes. When a fledgling is raised to stage three while in the midst of it all, the capillaries in their eyes can burst from the venom seeping into them too fast in an attempt to strengthen their eyesight. This causes the entire eye to be blotched with black. This happened to Pyro.

Scott doesn't have that, right? Well, it would take quite a while for damage from a transitional stage to be regenerated. Pyro's eyes and burns would take hundreds of years to fade enough for humans to be unable to see him as human again.

So one day Shelby, Drift, and Scott got cornered. Some rogue hunters thinking they're slick and trying to get in a quick glory kill. Scott is 1300 or so years old at this point, so it's not like they get close. But they do slash out his eyes during the scuffle. Drift and Shelby are fussing over it but nothing a bit of blood can't fix in a few days, right?

Abolish is looking at Scott strangley when his eyesight comes back. Because Scott is staring back at him with black eyes that have a barely noticeable red ring around the pupil.

and to be clear, the issue isn't headcanoning doc as having an eating disorder. i wholeheartedly agree with that headcanon, and have a lot of thoughts about various eating disorders doc might have had throughout his life. the issue is implying and insisting upon the false idea that eating disorders are actual effective ways to lose weight and appear skinny, and headcanoning characters as having an eating disorder to "explain" why they're skinny without incorporating any of the other trauma or effects of eating disorders, only using "eating disorder" as a magical reason that no character they like or draw has any body fat when that is not how eating disorders work. doc, even if he did starve himself (which i do not think doc during oakhurst would ever do under any circumstance presented in canon), would not magically become skinny. that's not how weight loss works, that's not how eating disorders works, and to perpetuate the idea that starvation is an actual way to lose body weight is dangerous. this is not "you're playing with toys wrong!!" discourse, this is real life prejudice and harmful rhetoric being spread through fanspaces that can and will harm people. jesus christ.

Hanahaki disease is a psychosomatic illness. It's a thing that your body does in response to stress over constantly repressing/concealing your feelings in settings with high background magic. It's like you've been ignoring pain for a long time and suddenly your vision starts going dark, because your affected body is just YANKING on random alerts trying to get you to PAY ATTENTION there is a PROBLEM. Yes the flowers do really exist. So do non-magical psychosomatic symptoms. The flowers aren't special.

This does of course open up the trope to options for non-romantic concealed feelings. Which I think is great. There is something viscerally satisfying about the person who seems so outwardly chipper coughing and hacking and spitting up Depression Flowers so now everyone has to know they're hurting. Isn't there?
