I understand why people don’t like the tone of season 6 but my maybe controversial opinion is people who hate season 6/7 don’t actually care about Buffy as an entire character because that’s when her arc really hits its highs!!

In earlier seasons they touch on her self sacrifice and depression (Prophecy girl and its aftermath, The Body, her sacrifice at the end of season 5) but season 6 REALLY TRULY confronts that and elevates her as a whole person, and it spoke to me as a young adult struggling with my own will to live in a world that feels evil and torturous.

She fights to find her will to live, and she realizes that even though bad things happen and keep happening, it’s still worth that battle to keep going—to believe that something better is possible, that happiness exists even when things seem miserable and dark. It’s worth it for our friends, our family, and ourselves. It’s worth it for love.

Progression isn’t always forward, sometimes we fail and fall back onto bad or unhealthy habits and make wrong choices but it doesn’t mean we’re hopeless or wrong—we’re just trying to figure out what it all means and our place in the grand scheme.

You don’t get as many of the emotional edits and stories without season 6. And season 7 is, of course, the final resolution.

the way I love the “why are you always around when I’m miserable? - it’s when you’re alone I reckon” so much

and it’s not because buffy is implying spike is around only ever when she’s miserable or that he’s the one bringing misery into her life

it’s the implication that every time she is going through something she is left alone to deal with it, everyone just be waiting on buffy to get over whatever’s bothering her and go back to her slayer duty

but he doesn’t.

he’s there to sit with her, to listen, to give a subtle advice even, to help her figure things out

and she doesn’t sound mad either, she almost sounds appreciative of the fact - as if, at least then she’s not alone

and it connects well to her telling him she needs him around in s7, simply for the fact she’s not ready for him to not be there

she will continue being miserable and he will continue being the only person around to share it
