Can we see what would have happened if Jim had gone back in to Kane in Out?
“Human. Get back here. Right. Now.” Kane ordered from the other side of the doorway, the authority in his voice nearly overpowering.
Kane wasn’t moving. He wasn’t tackling Jim to the ground, hitting, kicking, choking, breaking bones. He was just standing there, furious.
Jim took another step back, off the porch this time. The grass was soft under his bare feet, the sun still shining on him as he trembled.
Kane looked like he was about to explode with rage. “Get back inside right now or I am going to shatter your fucking ankles, you miserable piece of shit!”
Jim believed it. Kane wasn’t a very good liar. He meant this threat.
The barely-held-back tears fell from his eyes as Jim began to cry for real. He was just so terrified.
Would he even really have a chance at getting back home? It hadn't worked the first two times. It was so far away. He wasn't even wearing shoes. And spending the rest of his life here in constant pain beyond the bites sounded miserable.
"W-what happens if I come back inside?" he whispered tearfully.
Kane was silent for a long moment. "We can pretend this never happened," he decided.
"No punishment?" Jim asked.
Jim felt like he was moving through molasses as he stepped back onto the porch. As he stepped back into the house, the touch of the warm sun he hadn't felt in years leaving him. He stared down at his feet, like they'd betrayed him of their own volition.
"To your room," Kane prompted.
Jim nodded silently and obeyed.
