The Law of Attraction is bullshit.
I said what I said.
honestly it's very attached to the "bad people get bad things" mentality that cults and cult-like groups often use. "you're chronically ill because you must have been a bad person," or, "you're in poverty because you're inherently evil". it's honestly terrifying, and this bullshit is where it all seems to start
It is about as ableist as it can get.
"You can manifest away your mental/physical illnesses if you would just try hard enough, because you get back what you put in and attract what you send out."
"You aren't cured yet because you're not manifesting hard enough/being positive enough/putting out enough good vibes."
"You don't need medications. All you need are your intention and will, and if you work at it, the universe will respond."
It is toxic to say the least, and dangerous to say the most.
It's tangentially related to Prosperity Gospel, wherein people prosper financially if they are "good" and "worthy" and "favored by God," and people are only poor because they are "bad" and "lazy" and "sinful." And we all fully acknowledge how gross and nonsensical that is.
The Law of Attraction is the fullscreen version of this. It also plays into gatekeeping because newer witches are led to believe that their spells aren't working in grand and impossible ways because they're not TRYING hard enough, or their VIBES aren't right, or they're not doing X Magical Thing Du Jour. Y'know, rather than acknowledging that magic has limits and you have to put in the physical work to make the metaphysical work.
And it gets taught to witches under the same umbrella as the Threefold Law, because "Everything you do comes back times three" and "You attract and manifest what you think and feel, so you have to constantly police your thoughts and your energy" fit neatly into the bastardized version of karma that some sects of modern paganism like to pedal as part of the New Age package. It's usually right next to the chapter about how medicine is fake and essential oils can cure all your ills. (Also false.)
To me, it sounds remarkably like, "The entire reason things are going wrong in your life is because you're a dirty sinner and you need to REPENT."
It IS toxic. It IS dangerous. And it is definitely bullshit.
I feel much the same way about “manifesting” to be honest. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been told by other practitioners that I’m “manifesting” my chronic pain and disability by being “negative” or or having “bad vibes”. Or conversely that I need to “manifest” my recovery.
Any practice that teaches that people are to blame for their misfortunes because they don’t think the right way, or have “the right vibes” is very ableist. And if it isn’t innately ableist it can be applied that way.
I can’t believe you would call me out like this
yeah sure say fuck you to jk rowling but dont forget to like. actually support trans women.
Donate to the Trans Women of Colour Coalition
Stop using the word femboy
“Men in dresses” jokes aren’t funny they’re just transmisogynistic. Stop making them and stop supporting creators who make them.
Stop engaging with terfs. it doesn’t matter if you’re proving them wrong, you’re still giving them a platform. block them and move on.
Install shinigami eyes
Stop insisting trans women can’t use he/him pronouns or dress “masculinely”
Stop insisting trans women have to medically transition to be “real women”
Donate to the homeless black trans women fund
Read some books by trans women
Check out the Trans*Scribe category on Autostraddle
Donate to or volunteer at the San Francisco LGBT Center (they run the Trans Employment Program)
Hey! While those are amazing ways of supporting trans women and you should def check out and donate to these orgs, I’d like to remind people that Rowling’s terf bullshit has impacted very badly trans people in the UK, and all those are all US orgs from what I can gather. It’s great to support them, but Rowling has been particularly influential in fucking over trans people’s lives in the UK and made it really unsafe for UK trans people (which, as ever, means it’s even more unsafe for UK trans poc) .
I’d also argue that while Rowling is particularly vitriolic towards trans women, her stance and voice and lobbying end up affecting trans people in the UK as a whole. So while you shower trans women with love and support, please spread some of that love and support to other trans people too!
It’s past midnight and I have to be up in less than 5 hours so I don’t have the time or energy to put up an actual list myself besides some quick searching, but I’d love for everyone reblogging this to look up local trans uk orgs, especially trans poc uk orgs, and support them too.
Here is a list of black LGBT+ organisations
Here is a list of queer POC organisations
Here is a list of trans and non-binary organisations
Here is a fund to help young trans people get access to resources and care
Donate to Mermaids, an organisation that supports young trans people and their families
Donate to TransgenderNI, a trans network in Northern Ireland
Support Scottishtrans, a trans org in Scotland
(I apologize I tried to look for specifically Welsh trans funds or orgs but couldn’t find any - I did find the UNIQUE network but couldn’t find a page on how to support them - so if anyone knows of one please let me know!)
I encourage anyone to reblog this with more specific organisations or funds and gofundmes of UK trans people and especially trans women! And I encourage everyone to check out and support the orgs listed above, especially trans poc organisations!!
I’m also encouraging you to, in general, consider also supporting non-US trans people and organisations, even if they get less promoted (especially non-Western ones!). Trans people exist all over the world and deserve just as much support!!
Thank you so much! As a trans person living in the uk I was gonna point this out. J k rowling has already severely affected our laws and how trans people receive medical care so whilst I support the US trans community its a bit disheartening that even posts reminding you to help the people she hurts are US focused
A good Welsh trans fund is TransAidCymru!
here’s a link for Trans Aid Cymru
to make helping easier
THE GOAT HAS BURNED I REPEAT THE GOAT HAS BURNED
ok, it's almost Christmas time, so here's a reminder to my fellow white witches & pagans that we are not systematically oppressed, and our religion/craft is not erased and appropriated in the same way/at the same level as jewish people, BIPOC, muslims, or hindus. even during this time of year.
PLEASE do not compare our struggles to that of these groups. we can sympathize that our winter holiday(s) are also erased/treated like another christmas, but our experiences are vastly different, mostly in the fact that we as white witches/pagans are not systematically oppressed.
@skaldish got a cute new tank top. I love it.
“Most witches don’t believe in gods. They know that the gods exist, of course. They even deal with them occasionally. But they don’t believe in them. They know them too well. It would be like believing in the postman.”
— Terry Pratchett, Witches Abroad (via discworldquotes)
To be fair, I super believe in the postman.
Ted has big dreams.
So I joined Reddit for the sole purpose of checking out what the pagan/norse pagan/heathen scene was like over there, and I've learned a few things:
Newbies all ask the same questions.
Many people are under the impression you have to "discover" who your patron deity is? Wat?
The folkish shit gets deservedly downvoted.
There's a little baby subreddit for Lokeans called r/Lokean.
Most people have no idea what they're doing, which is disappointing but hardly surprising.
Oh no abort abort!
Seriously though I guess it's changed since I was last there because I remember r/Asatru being full of the right wing "Lokeans are utgard and can therefore be treated as subhuman" variety.
Well it seems that didn't go well for them in the long run, since r/Asatru is now restricted and archived.
Oh that's another thing I forgot! I haven't seen any backlash against people asking about Loki at all.
For real, sitting there reading those subreddits sometimes just like
Pulling this out next family gathering
